  • Apple May Discontinue Server-Focused Products Beyond XServe

Following Apple's decision in November to discontinue its Xserve line at the end of January, upsetting current users of the product, a new rumor is reporting that Apple may be discontinuing other server-focused products in the relatively near future.

Reports from multiple sources are stating that Apple will follow the end of Xserve by scrapping both Final Cut Server and Xsan, and even more interestingly, that Mac OS X Lion Server will be the last of Apple's server operating systems. Hardmac, who first broke the story, also writes that Apple's management is currently considering whether to "continue to develop and support [the products] in the future." Apple says that they are committed to continuing to support Xserve, hopefully even if these rumors turn out true, Apple will continue to support current customers for as long as they need.

If such rumors are true, it would signal the end of Apple's products for server and enterprise customers. Apple updates these products and its server-focused software much more infrequently than the company's consumer and professional-based products, and scrapping support for these products would indicate that Apple plans on putting even more emphasis on consumer-level products.

Steve Jobs himself said that XServe systems simply weren't selling. That may be the case for these other products. We'll have to wait and see if Xsan, Final Cut Server, and even Mac OS X Server suffer similar fates.

Wouldn't be good for business if your customers saw you using a competitors OS in your store

I'm disappointed that Apple is moving away from server and enterprise solutions.
Perhaps Apple will license Mac OS X Server to run on VMware vSphere

      frack me!
Compare MacOS server and let's say windows Small Business Server. They do have enough resources to make it at least very interesting solution for an SMB.
But the answer is clear, when there is so much profit from iOS, why bother?
I truly hate this decision, cause apple might have added some new values through their ideas to the server segment as well.

Oh, and yes, i am writing as if this was an official announcement, i was just waiting for rumors of this kind and eventually for an official press release confirming rumors.

I, as a network admin for three different medium to large corporations, setup and maintained many x-servers. The major problem with the technology is it's extreme efficiency, automation, and lack of need for monitoring. Worked myself, and everyone in my departments, out of jobs at all those companies (post-Mac-conversion syndrome).

To be honest I didn't know this Xserve existed, I thought Linux and Windows were your only options. I must now learn more about this, off to google!
