  • Nintendo Rumored to Launch App Store Next Year

    Venerable video game giant Nintendo is reportedly poised to launch its very own branded and fully comprehensive app store next year when the next generation Wii U console reaches the masses.

    As Matt Hinkey of The Daily reported this week, Nintendo's forthcoming touchscreen controller is the talk of the video game world - a world that may, indeed, be rocked by Nintendo's rumored plans to implement a full-blown app store for the next system.

    It’s unknown whether Nintendo plans to monetize its app store with a points system, which it currently uses for WiiWare and DSiWare, or with a more Apple-like pay-to-play system.
    As we all know, Apple gets a little edgy when competing tech rivals introduce any digital storefront called an "app store." Of course, it remains to be seen if Nintendo will do anything to raise Apple's ire the way Amazon apparently did when the online retail giant got into the app store business.

    Longtime Nintendo fans, however, say that the writing has been on the wall for some time now with regard to a Nintendo app store. As app stores clearly hold the key to how all future digital content will be procured, the video game industry certainly won't be removed from this burgeoning trend by any stretch of the imagination.

      Nintendo would do much better in Apple's app store. What good is it going to do us iPhone and iPad owners since these two iDevices pretty much have taken over the world?

      I knew it!!! Everyone was saying they should just side up with apple and let apple take over nintendo to be formatted for iOS. True Gamers are against it, and idevicers are all about it. I stated on the first article in regards to nintendo turning apple down was (If you can't beat them join them.) I'm telling you all now nintendo is gonna flip the script man!!! not sure if they will do very well for I'm a fan for both apple and nintendo. Nintendo would shock the work if they came out with there own phone. LOL!!!!!!!!!! Dude they would call it the niNPhoneDo. Ha,ha,ha ,ha,ha and I bet T-Mobile would back them up. That would be sweet and toooo funny at the same time.

      Valid Point, but I feel Nintendo has something up there sleeve. Either way I'm a big fan of both.

      The problem will be they will just be the games you can buy in the shops and like ps3 they will rarely be cheaper! And yeah they would make a killing if they put their games in apples app store they could even make and brand their own controller! After all the gameboy boom is dying when they charge £20-£40 for a -game that on the app store a game of same quality is £0.69-£4.99

      I'm a fan of both Nintendo and Apple but N should really do something about their game prices. Like scroogelives said,it's ridiculous to charge $40 for a game when you can find that game with better graphics,more updates, and a lot cheaper in the App Store.

      Plants vs Zombies is a good example. I played that game on my DSi and it sucks. The game costs around $30.

      Their own App Store for what- Android and Nintendo devices? This makes no sense. In a market where Angry Birds costs about 10% of what a DSi game retails for, it would make sense that they would bring at least some of their titles to iOS or Android (or both). The problem is that it would cannibalize their own sales for their portable devices. What's funny is that it is not like the 3DS or DSi XL are these remarkable graphics powerhouses; they are starting to get a bit gimmicky. They certainly aren't even in the parking lot of the ballpark that the PSP is in. They could even bring one title- Mario Kart anyone? - to the App Store and see how it does. With such a legend like Nintendo I am sure they could ink a nice deal with Apple.

      They'll probably end up hurting themselves even more by doing this. Nintendo's prices and gimmicks are only going to provide more insight into how much more reasonable and efficient other app stores are by comparison. Nintendo also survives almost entirely on rehashed sequels and remakes of games that have been around for 30 years because loyal nerds just can't get enough nostalgia. I'm sorry, but there's only so much you can do with Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Metroid. Making new controls doesn't make the games new. It's time to step it up and get on board with the 21st century, Nintendo. Come up with some new franchises that aren't mediocre, for the love of God, and start selling them reasonably.
