  • Redsn0w Updated to Version 0.9.10b2

Today, the iPhone-Dev team has rolled out an update to the iOS 5.0.1-untethering redsn0w 0.9.10 that was released yesterday for non-A5 devices only. As you may recall the untether could have been achieved one of three ways - 1. Installing the Corona untether package from Cydia while already being on a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1; 2. Running the updated redsn0w 0.9.10 over the tethered jailbreak that you had on iOS 5.0.1; 3. Completely updating/restoring your iDevice to iOS 5.0.1 and doing a fresh jailbreak using redsn0w 0.9.10.

As we reported yesterday, Saurik tweeted that he released two consecutive updates to the Corona untether package in Cydia in order to keep Corona from breaking the 'launchctl' dependency for numerous applications. All Corona untether users and redsn0w 0.9.10 jailbreakers included were advised to download and install the new Corona update to fix the launchctl problem that had occurred.

Since the Corona untether package was fixed yesterday, providing light for tweaks and applications that depended on launchctl including applications like IntelliScreenX and OpenSSH, the iPhone-Dev team found it necessary to update redsn0w to version 0.9.10b2 which would fix that issue for redsn0w users too. This way, redsn0w users would have no reason to install the Corona package to fix the launchctl problem.

If you jailbroke iOS 5.0.1 yesterday using redsn0w 0.9.10b1, then we recommend that you do a jailbreak over it today with the new redsn0w 0.9.10b2 so that that launchctl problem can be addressed. If you installed the Corona untether package after reading our article about it yesterday to fix the problem, you can uninstall it after you jailbreak over your existing jailbreak with the new redsn0w. When you do so, just make sure that you don't re-select the Install Cydia option and that you power down the device before going into DFU mode. If you're using Windows, run redsn0w 0.9.10b2 with administrator privileges. Here is the iPhone-Dev team's complete update description via their blog:

Always be sure to do a controlled "slide to power off" shutdown of your device before running redsn0w.

I ran b2 over b1 and it hung on DFU mode. Held both sleep/home button together-got it back to boot logo-got into DFU mode and it ran fine. I got lucky and got the BB repo and grabbed tweaks. Sadly now the MMI repo won't load. I'm not experiencing some the goofy stuff others are mentioning.

Also-iMessage was freezing on the tethered jb. It takes a bit to respring but it will be fine.

How do I run b2 over b1? I started with a fresh restore on b1. Usually you'd unselect install cydia to run a jailbreak over another correct? but this option isn't available

it works but instead of the ibookfix2 (because i couldn't find it)
i used iBooks Fix for iOS 5
after installing it installed a separate ibooks icon
you must use that icon and not the stock icon
      and it is working fine!

the option is available, but I would suggest you just install the updated Corona tweak in cydia and call it a day.
it is the most user friendly. But I wouldn't try uninstalling or you will end up and a respiring/apple boot loop

otherwise run the beta2 over the beta1 in dfu mode
and follow the mobile substrate directions i posted earlier

I would say just be patient and get your phone into DFU mode

      try a different usb cable
and a different usb port on your computer
(restarting your computer may help also to reset ur usb hub/bridge internally)

and then try booting tethered, or rerun the jailbreak to get out of the loop

I ended up just restoring but not through itunes regular restore. I just used my custom ipsw file that i made of ios 5.0.1. Now i get the posix error :<.

Okay, I read the article but I'm still a bit confused. Why is it recommended that we re-jailbreak our jailbroken devices if we jailbroke them yesterday? Nothing seems to be wrong with my jailbreak and even iBooks work too! So should I re-jailbreak it?

no sorry I haven't had to add a repo, i use pkgbackup and it does it for me
but i would ask are you waiting for cydia to completely load before you are trying to do this.

also a lot of people because of the new untethered jailbreak are accessing Cydia more than usual

so it could just be getting overloaded at the server level.
you may just have to keep trying or wait til later when some traffic dies down.

which source are you trying to add?

I did this. Simply open up b2 and have phone plugged in-shut off and then put it into DFU mode. I did NOT get an option to NOT install Cydia. So I did install it and everything came out fine. I even got to the BigBoss repo. I do believe much of the secondary problem is the server overload. Sometimes we just have to be more patient.

Haha, true true. I was just wondering if I should re-jailbreak since it was recommended and thought my current jailbreak might run into any problems in the future, but guess not!

      Quick question:

If we used Pwnage tool instead of Redsnow, do we still need to add a fix? I'd like to get this sorted out as long as Apple is signing the 5.0.1 firmware.

      Thx

reference paragraph 3 of the article

Since the Corona untether package was fixed yesterday, providing light for tweaks and applications that depended on launchctl including applications like IntelliScreenX and OpenSSH, the iPhone-Dev team found it necessary to update redsn0w to version 0.9.10b2 which would fix that issue for redsn0w users too. So if you do not use cydia for those tweaks it really will not affect you !
some tweaks use launchctl <~ that is what it fixes
