  • BGR: Rumored Physical Attributes of iPhone 5

On Tuesday, BGR posted the latest rumors and chatter coming from its sources with regard to the iPhone 5 - Apple's next generation iPhone scheduled for launch in 2012.

Despite earlier claims from the likes of prominent Wall Street watchers and analysts like Gene Munster, the iPhone 5 may not turn up in early summer, keeping with the new fall-time iPhone launch tradition apparently set this year.

BGR says the iPhone 5 won't reach consumers until the fall of 2012, a full year after the iPhone 4S dropped to record sales. But consistent with the predictions of Munster and others, new design elements will factor into the picture for Apple's next-gen smartphone.

The iPhone 5 will "join the glass iPhone face with a new aluminum back plate," the report reads. "It will also cover a redesigned antenna system that surrounds the device, allowing Apple to build the rear case out of aluminum without having to use a large plastic insert above the antennas as the company does on its iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G."

Although the BGR didn't speak to the last wave of iPhone 5 rumors, some maintain that a summer 2012 release is still possible for the smartphone refresh, which will likely deliver a bigger screen (albeit the same resolution of the current model) and a faster processor.

It's called iPhone 4S because of the addition of Siri :P

What did the "S" stand for in 3GS anyway?

According to the introduction video, it stands for "speed."

You'll be lucky to GET a new iphone anytime soon. It doesn't matter what they name it or what it looks like it'll still run the A5 chip, still be no bigger than the current 64gb, and any video changes will be software only (it already does 1080) so they will come in a FW update instead of a phone change. So aesthetically speaking it may look different in some way, but the new 4S has Apples new pride and joy triple antenna system, A5, 1080 video, and 64gb memory so in terms of what is out there for it to be upgraded to.......... currently nothing. The iPhone is in a technological rut as it has peaked for now until a new wave of chips, camera's, etc come forth in a year. You have to remember they are designing the next iphone NOW, not in a year. Right NOW they have nowhere to go worth talking about............. the 4s is maxxed.

I don't really care what they call it, I just hope they don't start using the stupid naming schemes of all these android devices. They all look the same and have the same hardware...I can't keep up w all the different android phones. annoying

I hope you're being sarcastic because if you aren't, it shows you've done zero research on this subject.

The A5 will be replaced by the quad-core A6 that will be in the iPad 3.
      Likely a 4 inch screen.
      Likely an aluminum back.
Likely a completely new antenna design.

Who knows what else will be implemented, but it likely won't be out until at least 1 year from the release of the 4S & based on how Apple does things, it will be a serious redesign.

There was never an iPhone 1, iPhone 2, or iPhone 3, yet there was an iPhone 4. Who are you calling an idiot? lol

Shame I just upgraded. Gotta wait two years before I'm gonna spring on another. Thanks for the write up. Second thought, I may wait for the iPhone 26.2 before I upgrade, you know the one that's built into your brain and projects itself on to your corneas....but still has battery issues. Haha.

Is that right? Explain how there's an iPhone 4, but not an iPhone 2 or 3.

Edit - Just noticed there's a post very similar to mines.

The 4S wasn't a redesign, but just a spec bump, just like the 3G -> 3GS so it was 4 -> 4S. As the next iPhone is extremely likely to be a redesign it will need a new number to not confuse anybody and distinguish it from prior phones. As it's going to be the 6th iPhone, it would make sense to call it the iPhone 6.

That said if it looks anything like those iPod Touch style concept images like this then I won't give a flying fcuk what it's called

Just my thoughts on this but why would you want an iPhone to look like an iPod touch and for that matter a 3G-3GS but slimmer ( looking at the pic in the link ),it's a step back not a forward thinking redesign.
