  • Jailbreaker Geohot Slapped with Restraining Order from Sony

On Tuesday, consumer electronics giant Sony proceeded to file a restraining order against jailbreaker extraordinaire George Hotz - better known in our community as "Geohot," the famous iPhone hacker. Geohot and his team have been cited by Sony for bypassing "effective technological protective measures" in PlayStation 3 firmware version 3.55. Just days ago, Geohot released a controversial jailbreak which enables PlayStation 3 hackers to run custom packages on the console. Geohot is endeavoring to restore the "Other OS" option pulled from the hugely popular gaming system in 2010.

According to Sony, the restraining order is necessary to stop Geohot from offering the jailbreak. The PS3 maker alleges Geohot and his cohorts are blatantly violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Computer Fraud Abuse Act. Based on what's known of the court filing, Sony takes direct aim at Geohot claiming the jailbreaker has "trafficked in circumvention technology, products, services, methods, codes, software tools, [and] devices."

The main reason Sony is upset? The company doesn't want illegal (aka pirated) games played on its system. As with all related jailbreak concerns, this case boils down to the almighty dollar. And Sony says Geohot's antics will continue to cost the company - and ultimately consumers - a pretty penny. Although "Save Geohot" t-shirts are not yet available, someone may want to fire up the printing press because Sony is seriously gunning for Geohot's head like no one has before.

If anything PS3 Hardware sales are going to increase. Is it not better for Sony to sell more consoles and possibly no software (if people buy for piracy), rather than the same people not to ever buy a PS3.
Personally I'll be keeping an eye open for turning a PS3 into a kickass media player and blu-ray player.
You must not own a ps3, It is already a great media sever and blu ray.

Props to the CM professor-Sony needs to suck it up. Either hire him and improve your security, or put back the OtherOS option you removed. This is stupid sue-happy crap all over again.
This has already been bypassed with a very simple step.

Your idea is flawed. Once you commit a crime (say murder), it is not undone by you going to jail for life. The idea is to create a punishment so that others don't want to follow in your footsteps.

That said, this whole thing is just as absurd as Apple trying to claim jailbreaking is illegal.

PS George... shave the pubes off your chin. You look like a douche.

I think that Sony should just say that jailbreaking voids your warranty and leave geohot alone it's not like he is the one distributing pirated games!

Sony is just afraid the same is going to happen with the ps3 as we did with the psp, ps2 . Sony, apple, and Microsoft need to learn that as long as they give us crap consoles with crap os systems it is ultimately going to get hacked eventually.

This is simple to get around...
A competent lawyer will just refer to the recent ruling on jailbreaking to get this thrown out.
Sony will just have to keep "updating" their OS like Apple.

Btw, it's not illegal to jailbreak your own devices. While It has not yet been deemed legal to distribute jailbreaking software, It has been deemed illegal to distribute jailbreaking software in exchange for money.

It was the Library of Congress not the FCC that made the ruling. I wish geohot all the success. Hopefully there will be a judge who can't be bought. Unfortunately, having a restraining order issued means the judge is already on Sony's side.

      Go geo!

I really don't get why anyone would jailbreak a PS3 anyway. It's just a gaming system.
