  • JP Morgan Predicts More Expensive iPhone on Verizon

According to J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz, Verizon customers excited about the prospective arrival of a certain Apple smartphone on the nation's largest mobile network might find themselves at a slight cost disadvantage over their peers on AT&T. Moskowitz predicts that Verizon may charge between $20 and $30 more than AT&T for the subsidized Apple iPhone price. Why? You can thank the higher expenses related to CDMA wireless components for this anticipated hike.

"The key differentiator is the cost of CDMA-related components," Moskowitz wrote Monday in a note to investors. "While the acquisition price of the iPhone could be slightly more expensive for subscribers on Verizon, we think that there will be offsets, specifically network performance." Moskowitz is taking a cautionary position on whether or not Verizon's network is up to the challenge of a Verizon iPhone - a product arrival that could initially overwhelm the network with millions of new iPhone customers, especially if reports of unlimited iPhone data plans pan out.

"If Verizon can avoid network performance issues during and after a potential iPhone roll-out, then we expect a multi-year growth spurt in U.S. iPhone sales," Moskowitz observed, noting that many AT&T iPhone subscribers are expected to leave their present carrier for the anticipated greener pastures of Verizon. Corroborating that claim is analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray, who also chimed in Monday to say that AT&T will likely sell six million fewer iPhones this year as a direct result of Verizon's non-exclusive acquisition of the iPhone.

Free to be a slave to another locked-down carrier. True phone freedom is carrier freedom, anywhere, anytime. You chose, not them

Cannot wait until these so called die hard customers from AT&T move over to Verizon to grab there iPhones .. that will free up MUCH more network power for us dedicated customers of AT&T .. for me, now going on 13 years with AT&T .. 1998 (AT&T), moved over to Cingular, and back to AT&T .. I wouldn't change, NEVER had any problems with them.

I believe AT&T has the upper hand on Verizon right now. They've obviously been preparing for this. The are the sole carrier of Windows 7 phones (for now), they still have the iPhone 4 and iPad with a very large marketshare, they have all the latest Blackberries (yes people still love them), and they have a few of the latest Android devices. Finally they are rolling out a new 4G upgrades that's obviously boosting the 3G network as well. I would say AT&T is in very good shape right now. Verizon is the one that should be worried. They have been losing new customers to AT&T and the iPhone 4 and who knows how their network will perform once the iPhone 4 lands. I sure hope their prices stay competitive or they may be in more trouble than we think.

It depends if they put the 2 different networks (GSM and CDMA) into 1 phone or just have 2 different kinds, but I'd assume the only changes to the phones would be the network they use, everything else the same...

So true. If you let them walk all over you you'll end up paying more, they always try to sneak stuff in.

I can see Verizon charging more for something like that, maybe not a straight up price change but something else. Who knows though, anything is possible!

Oh, and good job fixing the "Not mobile?" button on the iPhone version of the site. It's been, what, at least a year? It doesn't work. If you're not going to fix it, just remove it.
you just need to mouse over the add then click on were it says vibrant and it will tell you how to use and there is a disable check and then check that and your good to go your welcome

And its seems extremely unlikely this iPhone will support LTE. Apple went with Edge in '07 even though AT&T's 3G was far more reaching (customer base) than LTE currently is. The summer revision is when we'll likely see LTE for both AT&T and Verizon iPhones.

I like many of you was in the Verizon iPhone camp but as of a week and a half ago I now have 3G data in my area. So my biggest reason for jumping to Verizon is gone. No need to switch. I'll gladly finish out my contact with AT&T.

Yes!! Finally iPhone on verizon. Better for me in two ways: 1. Better network 2. More customers for my themes

I personally hate verizon so I'll never switch.

Also my guess would be that verizon expects the massive bandwidth usage so if they do have problems then they're just stupid.

The first thing people are going to ***** about with verizon, is their network speed. which is FAR below what att or even tmobile offers. In my area the speeds are well above average and 5-6x that of the verizon network. I know verizon covers ALOT of area, but I am not willing to sacrifice speed for a little bit more coverage.

I completely agree. It's going to be hilarious when the AT&T vs. Verizon iPhone network speed tests come out. I once tried to load the Apple website on a Droid. It took about a minute. That's a good 4x longer than my iPhone.

What will really be interesting is to see if a.) its a hybrid qualcomm chip (cdma/gsm) abd b.) it its compatible with evdo rev b. which allow simultaneous voice and data. Which will be a deal break imo for people, if it DOESNT support it.
