  • Is This Apple's 5th Generation iPhone Prototype?

Nothing like a good "photo leak" to ramp up the iPhone rumor mill.

Now that 2011 has arrived, there's only another six months or so until the 5th generation iPhone likely debuts. Does this mean the tech blogosphere will be buzzing with iPhone rumors, pics, and vids for the next 180 days? Unfortunately, there's a good chance the answer is yes. It's a process that they may have gotten underway today, as the "leaked photos" shared by SmartPhone Medic are reportedly those of Apple's 5th Generation iPhone (or possibly the long-awaited Verizon iPhone).

Here we have both images and video (each from different sources) showcasing the goods. The video comes courtesy of Global Parts Direct, a company that is clearly trying to promote itself while dishing on the alleged iPhone 5 prototype. SmartPhone Medic, on the other hand, is already a well-known and somewhat credible source for leaked iDevice info. As Apple Insider reminds us, last August SmartPhone Medic got its hands on a genuine front panel for the forthcoming but still top secret fourth-generation iPod touch.

The newest photos portray the next generation iPhone design, which suggests Apple has improved upon its flawed antenna design that resulted in the so-called "Death Grip" phenomenon. Additionally, the professed 5th generation iPhone frame reveals a retained spot for a micro-SIM card, the obvious implication of which hints at a long-awaited "world" phone design - both GSM and CDMA. While CDMA doesn't use a SIM card, Verizon's 4G network does. So if, in fact, this iPhone 5 panel is a legitimate prototype, it can clearly be deduced that Apple will be expanding its carrier relationships (likely in the US) with the release of the next generation handset.

Real or fake? You be the judge.

If it wasn't real, why would YouTube be forced to yank it from being seen???? Just think about Ufc fights, MLB, NFL videos. It's basically a copyright situation. Which smells like teen spirit..... I mean, smells like THE TRUTH!!!!

That's what happens when things are designed in the USA and built by slave labor in third world countries. Can you blame some sap making a few bucks a month for trying to make some extra loot.

I dont believe Foxconn is located in third world countries. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Seriously most people I see on these forums are the same people who got picked last in gym and continue to have no life.
I would say that the people who have the time to complain about "how much of a waste of time" journalism is should probably develop a hobby or read a book. Dont like it dont read it, (Moron)

China is as third world as it gets and I have my opinion on this article and every right to express it as I live in a country free of communist oppression.

I'm sorry.. Why does a slot for a micro sim indicate it will be both gsm & CDMA? The current gsm only model has a slot for a micro sim.

Where are those companies that report on what phones and how many are running on what network? Surely there would be SOME of these CDMA iPhones running on a regular basis by now??

It's also can't be real because it doesn't have a micro USB for the charger which has to be done this year by law ( in Europe )

At first I was like, "Darn that a thick phone!"

I have a feeling all this Verizon rumoring will, in the end, actually see the iPhone go to Sprint. Even though I want (need? for theming?) the iPhone, I think I would have to have a good laugh if it went to Sprint.

This is more evidence that many people here don't read those squiggly little words under the pictures before they comment.

Dont really know what the whole fuss is about. I held an iphone 4 yesterday and it had those separations on the side. Asked the sale consultant and he said that how the new batch of phones looked like. its the fix for the antenna gate. I prefer the original design though. But reception had 2 bar difference between the two demo's(old batch and new). guess its better.

This. You all are seeing a frame nearly identical to the iPhone4 with the same micro-sim slot as the AT&T exclusive iPhone4 but no, this identical micro-sim slot MUST be for Verizon I'm pretty sure you all are jumping to conclusions. It's the 4S, a incremental update that'll tweak the design and function of the i4, just like the 3G to 3GS. I mean, how much can apple do over the i4 now besides more ram, a tweaked antenna design (to answer everyone who would pan the i5 due to having "the same faulty antenna"), and probably a 64gb version? Relax everyone lol

This rework is clearly for the Verizon iPhone.

I don't think that current iPhone 4 will be able to compete with that monster of a Android phone coming to at&t. That Motorola Atrix 4g has a 2ghz Dual core processor with 1gb of ram. Not to mention Verizon will be getting something similar to the Atrix 4g in the Droid Bionic.
