  • Is This Apple's 5th Generation iPhone Prototype?

Nothing like a good "photo leak" to ramp up the iPhone rumor mill.

Now that 2011 has arrived, there's only another six months or so until the 5th generation iPhone likely debuts. Does this mean the tech blogosphere will be buzzing with iPhone rumors, pics, and vids for the next 180 days? Unfortunately, there's a good chance the answer is yes. It's a process that they may have gotten underway today, as the "leaked photos" shared by SmartPhone Medic are reportedly those of Apple's 5th Generation iPhone (or possibly the long-awaited Verizon iPhone).

Here we have both images and video (each from different sources) showcasing the goods. The video comes courtesy of Global Parts Direct, a company that is clearly trying to promote itself while dishing on the alleged iPhone 5 prototype. SmartPhone Medic, on the other hand, is already a well-known and somewhat credible source for leaked iDevice info. As Apple Insider reminds us, last August SmartPhone Medic got its hands on a genuine front panel for the forthcoming but still top secret fourth-generation iPod touch.

The newest photos portray the next generation iPhone design, which suggests Apple has improved upon its flawed antenna design that resulted in the so-called "Death Grip" phenomenon. Additionally, the professed 5th generation iPhone frame reveals a retained spot for a micro-SIM card, the obvious implication of which hints at a long-awaited "world" phone design - both GSM and CDMA. While CDMA doesn't use a SIM card, Verizon's 4G network does. So if, in fact, this iPhone 5 panel is a legitimate prototype, it can clearly be deduced that Apple will be expanding its carrier relationships (likely in the US) with the release of the next generation handset.

Real or fake? You be the judge.

lol but will it be LTE or HSPA+? What cracks me up is AT&T jumped on the "HSPA+ is 4G" bandwagon at CES today. But HSPA+ is not considered real 4G and Verizon is pretty clear they think calling it "4G" is a joke.

However, wimax (sprint's 4G) is considered a legit 4G network yet their DL speed is similar to AT&T's HSPA+ speed. So what is true 4G anyway? Too many opinions

It clearly states in the article that Verizon's 4G network requires a sim card.

WOW. True ignorance right there! So, 30 (or US equivalent) up for a decent case is acceptable so that you may hold a phone to not lose signal??? As if you buy something as desirable and good looking as an iPhone 4 then immediately proceed to cover it in an ugly case JUST so you can hold the bugger in a way you'd hold any other phone! GTF'outa here, man lol.
That's what I said when the fan boys were (apparently still are) willing to pardon apple for selling a phone that didn't work as a phone without the ugly case.

Actually this design would fall perfectly in place for the next gen phone. There isn't going to be a major physical difference in the i5.

This. I feel this revision will be just like the original iPhone to the 3G. It will be a minor update, but introducing a new network, 4G.
They will simply call it, iPhone 4G.

Of course this is all speculation.

You guys act like it's a minor update the iPhone 4 is packed to the brim as it is. Adding a hybrid gsm/CDMA chip especially and LTE one at that would take up a lot of space, putting a bigger camera sensor and extra ram/processor is more space that isn't available. The iPhone 4 was a drastic leap as it is making it slimmer and putting a massive battery in it was pretty impressive, unless they have a trick up there sleeve with a new kind of battery or micro chips you guys are asking for a lot especially after what we got last year

You need to ask a super mod, you probably have enough posts to get a custom title, but you need a lot to get a custom colour

personally, If that is the real 5th gen iphone I would be really disapointed. I love everythin in the iphone specially when I jailbroke it. the only thing that bothers me is its screen. I like bigger and wider screens.

Er, ok maybe that was an arrogant statement (and pardon my incorrect use of too,I will go correct that now ),
but not all cases are ugly, and not all of the decent ones are expenseve if you know where to look.I do think that it is absolutely insane that you need a case to get service (but you might as well get one to protect your desirable and good looking iPhone 4, so it keeps value, IMO). However, I get tired of people complaining all the time, but I COMPLETELY see where you come from on this issue.

but please know that I am not a 100% fanboy. I like my mac alright, but more and more of the things that apple is doing are making me angry. I personally think that Apple screws you over once you give them your money for an iDevice (but lets not get into that here), and THATS the WHOLE reason why I jailbreak and why i encourage others to jailbreak. And by the way, when Cydia for mac comes out, believe me when i say, I will be the one of the first to put it on my mac !
