  • Skype for iPhone Now Features Video Calling

Skype has updated its iPhone app to include video calling over Wi-Fi and 3G. With Skype 3.0 you can make two-way video calls to other iPhone 4 and 4th gen iPod Touch users. iOS users without front-facing cameras can still receive video, but they can only transmit audio for obvious reasons. You can also use Skype in landscape mode as well as portrait mode with this version.

Making video calls to Mac and PC desktop users is now possible with this updated version as well. You can now stay connected in a more personal way even if you are at either end of the country. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that data charges apply if you are using 3G. If you don’t have an unlimited plan, you may want to keep an eye on the length of your video calls because video eats up much more bandwidth than regular audio calls.

Video calling up until recently has always been relegated to the world of sci-fi. For years now, movies have depicted a future where videophones are the norm. Now that future is here and with devices that fit in our pockets no less. With Skype adding video to their popular calling app, they will surely give Apple’s FaceTime a run for its money. Competition in this segment of the market will only lead to bigger and better things. Video calling is still in its infancy, but as the technology continues to evolve, it will become a standard feature in countless devices. Just wait until Apple comes out with the iHolo-iPhone. Then video calling will be really interesting.

How easy is it to use compared to Fring? I could never get video calling on fring to work because someone had to have some kind of messenger account and it would never work. People want to just get on and go not have to jump over hoops to get it to work.

Probably use the video calling more on Skype than FaceTime considering a lot more ppl have/use Skype than FT.

Well just tried to get it to work and it doesn't work. Tried to call my buddy next to me as we both got the app. And it says i need skype credit to make the call. WTF? Then on his phone when he tried to call me it rings and says your call to xxx xxx xxxx cannot be completed as dialed. What are we doing wrong?

FaceTime might be nice, but screw that Apple-newest-models-only lock-in tactic.
Fring is cool and multi-platform, but it's still short of non-mobile clients for PC, Mac and Linux.
Tango is cool, but still in its infancy.

Skype seems to be the way to go for now, it's already widely adopted and covers a whole lot of platforms.

Video call worked Ok between an iPhone 3GS (4.0.1/jb) and an iPhone 4 (4.1/jb), both on WiFi.

The 3GS did send video from its back-facing camera, but it was way slower to reflect movement than the video sent by the 4, which was also understandibly crisper and sharper.

is it just me or does the video quality really suck? I'm using an iPhone 4 (ios 4.1).. and the front face camera quality is horrrrrrible!

I will stick with Tango for now.

Got this too. I have a Jailbroken iPhone 4 on 4.0.1

Haven't been able to test it out.

Does this work for Jailbroken iPhones?

For everyone saying it doesnt work for jailbroken phones .. It does.. It pops up then when u press ok it goes away.. If not, reinstall..

And the quality is great for 3G.. On wi-fi it is just awesome .. Leave FT out of the equation.. Skype is the way to go...!!

we need hackers to make this work with 3GS. I've seen a FaceTime hack before for 3GS.

So how do you make it work? Do you need to have a special account? Or pay for anything?

This is how the video calls is supposed to work! Now there's no use for FaceTime... Great holiday gift Skype, thanks!

What is the use if you need to use the only cam on 3GS? You can't see the caller or he/she cant's see you! Better try to upgrade to 4.
