  • [How To] Tired of App Store Applications Being Mean to You Because You're Jailbroken?

xCon is your one-stop-shop for ending the App Store application bullies.

There have been numerous App Store applications that can detect that an iDevice has been jailbroken. To name a few: Bloomberg Anywhere, Cablevision, Cisco M-Learning, DirecTV Pad, Grimm's Fairy Tale apps, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon OnDemand/FlexView. All of these applications will give you a hard time when you attempt to open them on a jailbroken iDevice. They will give you errors and they won't work. They are specifically programmed to check to see if a user's iDevice is jailbroken and in doing so, it triggers the response to not allow the application to run. We're not absolutely certain why these companies are against jailbreaking, but maybe Apple has something to do with it. Maybe Apple is in cahoots (this is a complete myth, don't take that seriously).

Anyway, since you cannot use those somewhat popular applications on a jailbroken iDevice, developer n00neimp0rtant has created a free Cydia tweak that aims to be a one-stop-solution to breaking the locks put on jailbroken devices with these applications. The tweak patches the applications that try to avoid jailbreakers by circumventing the code that checks to see if the iDevice has been jailbroken or not. In doing so, you can use any of the above italicized applications without any problems on a jailbroken iDevice.

That's pretty much all that it does and it might come in handy to some of you. If you're a user of any of the above italicized applications and you're tired of being bullied by the companies who make the applications, you can install this tweak to use their application regardless. The developer notes in the description that if you come across any other applications that don't take kindly to jailbreaks, you can email them and they will attempt to update xCon to break the lock on those applications as well.

The fix for the Cablevision (now Optimum) app is to change the app name for Cydia. You have to change a couple bundle identifiers in the info.plist and also the binary in addition to changing the .app folder. I use Cydia2. To get it to work on VPN there are a couple fixes (.deb files) floating around out there. I tried a few different ones till I found one that works. However, for me it doesn't work so well because the app won't scale to video quality to the bandwidth available.

      +1
Also, apple benefits from jailbreakers. i.e. wifi sync. They barely bothered to change the icon! SMS tones. Same thing. They get to see what people want AND they have hired at least one jailbreaker!
