Let's face it. Sometimes, there are people we don't care to hear from. Sometimes, it's the other way around.
How would you like to be able to have to option to control whom your iPhone rings for? Let's say, for example, you could make your iPhone ring when your spouse calls you, but it only vibrates when other people call you. Or, you could make your iPhone vibrate when your mom calls you and ring when your girlfriend calls you. However you want to use it, this tweak has a lot of awesome features involved. In all cases, you would want to only receive calls from people you're happy to talk to and ignore those from the people you don't care for so much. With this tweak, dubbed VIP Ringer by the renowned jailbreak developer Yllier, you have the option to configure those kinds of settings in extreme depth.
Albeit VIP Ringer is not a blacklist application, you can still use it to ignore unwanted calls. You can individually assign the volume of a ringtone for each contact. This means you can assign annoying people with a silent volume and assign fun people with a louder volume. This should help you if you want to ignore the unwanted calls and answer the better ones. Additionally, if you have your iPhone in vibrate mode, you can choose specific contacts that will still ring even when you have your iPhone on vibrate. This means that you can have all of your contacts on vibrate, or you can have all of your contacts on vibrate except for a select few. So if you are expecting a call from your spouse, you can put your iPhone on vibrate and assign your spouse a ringtone so that you will know when only your spouse calls you.
Not only can you assign individual contacts with certain features, but you can also assign entire groups with settings. For me, since I have my family, my friends, and my Modmyi co-workers, this feature works well for me. I can assign my family with settings to be able to call me, and I can assign my co-workers to only vibrate when I want to spend time with my family. If I'm busy working, I can do the opposite. The setting will apply for everyone in the specific contact group that you assign and this feature is really cool and useful if you have a busy life. It really helps organize things by importance.
Once you install VIP Ringer, you can open the Settings app and find it in your settings. The settings for VIP Ringer as you will see when it becomes available, is almost empty. Except for... one switch. But lucky, Yllier explains how to configure the settings for VIP Ringer inside of the settings window:
It says that the settings for the VIP Ringer tweak can be configured directly from the iPhone's Contacts app. That's cool, so now we open the contacts app and we see all of our contacts. Now, how do we actually configure the ringer settings? Easy, my friends. Tap on a contact (we will be picking on Apple Inc.) and you will see the button below:
If you actually tap on the VIP Ringer settings button at the bottom of the contact window, you will be brought up with a whole new page of options with a bunch of on/off switches that can be configured to your own liking:
From this window, you can control when the contact will vibrate, when they will ring, and configure those options for both calls and texts. This means that not only calls, but also text messages will be only notified to your liking. Are you enjoying VIP Ringer yet? You can also control groups in your contacts. You can tap the back button in the Contacts application until you're all the way to the first page, and you'll see a window that looks like this:
You can see that there is a settings button for each one of your groups as well as for each one of your contacts. By tapping on those VIP buttons you will pull up the window with the on/off switches again and you can configure those settings for the whole group instead of each contact one by one. This makes sorting through the contact list a whole lot easier.
Additionally, you can invoke an Activator action to mute the iPhone for a designated amount of time. A popup window will appear with a spin-box where you can enter the amount of time that you want. This is probably one of the cooler features, you can mute the iPhone until class is over, or until work is over. It will keep you from getting distracted.
As of now, we are not sure how much it will cost or when it will be in Cydia, but we do know that the tweak is finished and it will be arriving on Cydia soon! We will likely have a giveaway when it is released so stay tuned. VIP Ringer is compatible with iOS 5 and iOS 4 and it works awesome for everything that I've tested it for. I've been working with Yllier for a while to help remove some bugs and I'm happy to say that I think it is now bug free. Yllier has added support for some applications, one of them includes the upcoming CallBar 1.0 which we will be reviewing very soon! As always, thanks for adding another amazing tweak to our iDevice arsenal, Yllier!
The tweak's features simplified:
- For individual contacts:
- Custom volume for ringtone.
- Override mute for calls and messages.
- Custom volume if overridden.
- Always vibrate (if vibrations are turned off in Settings).
- For groups:
- Same as for contacts + custom ringtone and message tone.
- Go to the Settings for Activator and assign VIP Ringer for a gesture -> if activated a popup will appear where you can mute the iPhone for any amount of time (up to 24 hours). if you select override settings -> VIP Ringer settings for groups and contact will be ignored -> the phone is completely muted.
- While the phone is VIP-muted and you activate the popup, a new popup will appear allowing you to remove the VIP-mute or create a new one.
- If the device is VIP-muted an icon on the status bar will be displayed letting you know.
- Temporary mute; you can mute your iPhone for just 5-10 minutes or a few hours.
Additionally, it works with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It works with Phone, FaceTime, Messages, and iMessage.
