  • Smoking iPhone 4 Frightens Passengers on Airplane

Apparently, an overheating, smoking, and slightly glowing iPhone 4 was enough to frighten the pants off of passengers on an Australian regional airline late last week, we're just now discovering.

Passengers on board the Regional Express (REX) say the flight crew had to extinguish a glowing red iPhone 4 that was the source of a creepy "dense smoke." Presumably, some on board thought the iPhone was an explosion risk or perhaps a bomb scare. But as it turns out, the device was just overheating. And, luckily, no one was harmed.

As we understand it, the entire incident was documented and subsequently reported to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for investigation. As we all know, Apple has a history of battery issues with the iPhone 4, but the degree to which this particular device melted down is not common.

By no means should this story make anyone fearful of flying with their iPhones. But we'll keep you posted on the outcome of the ongoing investigation by aviation officials.

Oh great. Now everyone flying in Australia is going to be forced to leave their iPhone behind?

Lithium Polymer batteries are potentially volatile, and occasionally misbehave. In phone uses, the amp draw is pretty low, so cooling is not a design issue. When the polymer membranes inside the battery are breached, reactants inside the battery that are normally separated suddenly get to occupy the same space, and overheating, melting and even flames can be the result. These breaches can be the result of impact, defects or overcharging. If you haven't seen them, lookup lipo fires on youtube. A lot of energy density in a little space makes for some dramatic flare-ups.

i live at 7200 ft and my i4 and i4s are just dandie, so idc what pressure the cabins in planes are (as long as there is some) didn't do anything in this situation.

Maybe Steve is trying to tell us something....like when people see Jesus in their morning toast?

...or maybe it was the big bad iPhone bomber. Great, no more smartphones on airplanes...

I would bet that it is the original back. The cracks and missing slivers of glass make it look the way it does.
Also, any RC hobbyist knows the dangers that come along with Li-Po batteries. If they fail they will smoke like crazy and then ignite with a powerful display.

Here's an example... Lipo explode - YouTube

In no article does anyone notice or say anything about the Steve Jobs Apple logo on the back of the iPhone...
The phone had a user-modified back plate! If I think that the user is gonna get a replacement? NO!
The lesson here?: don't mess with the hardware or it blows up in your MF face!!!
Moreover the Yahoo article about this has the same picture of the exploding phone with the logo cropped out...great! It's like everyone can't wait for a f*ck-up to appear so they can jump on it and start pointing the finger at Apple...

Where are you seeing steve jobs in the logo?
