  • Camera+ Returns from Exile

Camera+ was a popular alternative camera app in its previous incarnations, making the #3 top seller on the App Store at its peak. Apple rejected it multiple times because the devs kept trying to sneak a mod that used the volume button as an alternative camera trigger past the reviewers. Now it's back, deemed acceptable by Apple, and with even more features than before in a slicker package.

In August, developers TapTapTap acknowledged that the so-called "VolumeSnap" feature - allowing the volume control on the earbuds as well as the phone to be used for triggering the camera shutter pictures - had caused Apple to reject the app, as "changing the behavior of iPhone external hardware buttons is a violation of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement." This was the second go-around for TapTapTap, who had seen the app rejected for the same reason before. While they removed the feature from the next update, they hid it as an "easter egg" which was easily activated by users. Once news of the hidden feature made the tech blogs, the app got yanked for a third time.

After a major upgrade, all has been seemingly forgiven and Camera+ is back on the App Store, apparently with the VolumeSnap feature completely removed. There are a host of significant improvements that should bring the app right back up the to the top of the charts. The app is much faster to load and snappier all around. The awkward "retro SLR" skin has been replaced by a clean, intuitive interface, with zoom slider, stabilizer, timer, and burst mode controls easily accessible.

With 53 updated features, Camera+ 2.0 is a strong contender for a native Camera app replacement. It's available for a limited time at the reduced price of $0.99 on the App Store, and is free to people who had bought the previous version of Camera+.

Apple should at least open up their app store to apps that modify external behavior (such as activator) and maybe have a little warning before installing the app saying it will modify your iPhone. Do they seriously expect us to stop jailbreaking? If they wonder why so many people do it (including myself), why don't they look through the benefits of jailbreaking. Apple can definitely take those advantages and make them faster and more battery-efficient by integrating them into ios. before you know it, they will introduce panoramic wallpapers even though there is a perfectly good mod on cydia(panorama), and take full credit just like every other thing they have stolen from JB devs (home wallpaper, multitasking, vid recording...)

Exactly. They should allow a lot of jailbreaking features, but make sure there are hard-to-miss disclaimers. And I'm sure they could make a themer like Winterboard that would be more efficient seeing as how it would be built into the OS instead of Mobile Substrate (being an add-on running on top of the OS). Think of all the money they could make and praise they would receive.

Guys, guys, calm down. A couple of you are being irrational about this whole thing.
Although allowing Camera+ to use the volume button to snap shots would be a good feature, it isn't permissible.
Reason being: Apple would have to allow all other apps to modify hardware buttons which could lead to some frustrated users who may confuse the use of certain buttons. And believe me, there are some people who are easily confused with common logic. Apple may allow some modifications in the future once they sort out a few things, until then why complain and resort to the same lines used for the past few years like CrApple, etc? Go email Steve, visit Apple's forums and make suggestions. I just think it's lame to read the same lines over and over. It makes you look dumb and immature. Just my two cents ^^

This is a very flexible app that works well.
Finally a 99 cent app that does a pretty good job.
      I like the FX.

Haha, I almost forgot to say what I'd planned now...

I've had Camera+ since the beginning, and I currently have the snap feature. I'm afraid to update it and lose the function. Is all the new ish worth it? Opinions?

Maybe they'll implement it into the iPhone 5, and lead everyone to believe it was their idea. Kinda like categories, backgrounder, air print, and so on, and so on.
^^^^ well put they would be nothing without ideas from jailbreaking
