  • Recently Awarded Patent Reveals Apple's Interest in NFC Technology

There were several rumors regarding the possibility of Apple’s next smartphone featuring NFC technology in the months leading up to Apple’s iPhone announcement in the fall. Many competitors in the market have had the wireless payment technology for some years but it really only started to gain some traction recently. As you can all tell, the rumors were ended up being false, since there isn’t any kind of NFC chipset in the iPhone 4S.

This doesn’t mean that Apple is completely looking over the technology though. The company was recently awarded a patent regarding Near Field Communications in mobile devices. According to the folks over at Patently Apple, Apple recently won its first NFC patent related to retail transactions. Their patent document explains a method of establishing a master/slave relationship amongst two smartphones, both of which use NFC. The whole procedure described in the patent sounds very similar to many of the rumors that were flying previously.

The patent seems to specifically narrow in on the technology being used in retail situations. What this means is that Apple may be amidst an NFC-based mobile payment system. It is quite possible but nothing is certain as of yet. Patent details can be found below (courtesy of Patently Apple):

Apple also recently updated its retail experience by opening up the option of utilizing Apple’s EasyPay application. The updated version of this application allows users to scan products that they plan to buy at Apple stores allowing you to read reviews and check prices, than ultimately give you the option to pay via credit card (allowing you to skip the long lines). The EasyPay application might be the foundation of something much bigger that Apple plans to venture in.

Would you like to see Apple using NFC technology in the next iteration of the iPhone? Share your thoughts below!

wasn't there a mod that could add NFC to the i4 that surfaced 8 months ago or so?

Yah there would be no reason for them to not go this route. I'm pretty sure the reason they have held off is so that they can do it the right' way.

      Would be convenient.

I think it needs a special chip in order to do that.

There is a mod, but it's ghetto as all hell. It basically involves taking the backplate off the iPhone and slapping the card in between the innards of the phone and backing. of course, the card does have to have an NFC chip built into it.

There are obvious limitations here. First and foremost, you only get one card. Second, you have to sacrifice the card (won't be able to use that same card in a "normal" machine). Lastly, you get to rip the damn thing apart every time your card expires (which isn't a HUGE deal as most cards give at least a couple years and by then we have generally moved on to bigger and better things/phones).

Although truly cool technology, I can't help but think that when this is available on the iPhone everyone will once again claim apple is the inventor and everyone is copying. Yet my nexus s can already use NFC for payments.

I hear you, brother. Or they will say "Apple waited this long because they wanted to do it right!"

It's actually a bit different. Square card case is more of a tab system. Have you ever gone to a bar and started a tab? It's the same general concept. The NFC system is just like a credit card, but instead of pulling out your credit card(s) you just wave your phone over the NFC machine and it pulls the info as if you had swiped the credit card through a traditional machine.

My intent is not to insult or belittle anyone but I can't help but wonder If you are not an idevice user or if you are against most things apple why would you apply for an account with modmyi. I'm not on fudgesickle, gingerman, and whatever other android site because I don't use their systems. That being said NFC is great technology and has been around for sometime so I do not think apple enthusiast will claim that apple invented it but one could argue that they will perfect it withing the scope of ios.

Some people, like myself, use both operating systems on various devices. I also use Windows alongside OSX and some distros of linux. Pros and cons to each, and I don't mind pointing that out. Oh, I also frequent those other forums you mentioned. I find it strange that there are people out there that assume if you have one there is no way you have (or can like) the other. I am a technology lover, not an Apple, Google, (insert whatever brand you want here) lover.

I used iPhone for a few months, went back to Android. I own iPad2, my wife uses iPhone and MacBook.
No one said i am against most things apple. Im against most fan boys and Kool-Aid drinkers. Im against crazy nutcases that out of the blue start talking to you in the store and praise how apple products were literally g-ds gift to man. Thats what im against.
Apple puts together a decent product and advertising and i respect that. Not the blind faith that people have towards it.
