  • Motorola Calls iPad "Just a Giant iPhone"
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quI2I8wLPdc&feature=player_embedded]YouTube - Tablet Evolution presented by Motorola[/ame]

Motorola threw down yesterday with a new teaser video for their mysterious upcoming 10-inch Android tablet. Called "Tablet Evolution," the video takes shots at both the iPad - which is derisively referred to as "a giant iPhone" and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which runs a version of Android OS meant to run on a phone. The video ends with a shot of an object under a curtain, and a bee (presumably representing "Honeycomb," the made-for-tablets version of Android) buzzing around Motorola's new red logo, followed by the words "CES 2011," indicating the device will be released at the Consumer Electronics Show next month.

Nothing is known for sure about the Motorola tablet, which was briefly shown off by company vice president Andy Rubin at the All Things Digital: Dive Into Mobile conference in San Francisco a few weeks ago. It is believed to have a 10-inch, 1200-by-800 display, a 1GHz Tegra 2 T20 processor with 512 MB of RAM, 32 GB of built-in flash, and support for up to 32 GB of external storage via its microSD slot. Rumors have also suggested a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, an HDMI out port, a microUSB port and a gyroscope. It's expected to be carried on Verizon Wireless, which has signaled that it will announce LTE-compatible Android devices at CES on January 6. A blurry picture of the Motorola tablet in Verizon livery was also leaked this month, further bolstering that rumor.

Apple has a number of competitors queued up to be the "iPad killer," but up until Motorola none have been able to match it in terms of screen real estate. If Honeycomb is able to overcome the limitations of existing Android OSes it may be a serious challenger. However, there is a real hurdle to overcome: Apple's head start puts it on track to sell as many as 43 million iPads next year. Is there a market for that many giant Droids?

Yes but that's not any selling point what so ever. If your trying to beat competition they should come up with reasons why it's better. I find that I'm around the house my phone is too small. And I don't wanna get the MacBook out so I wish I had a bigger screen......an iPad. I'll def be getting the iPad 2G

This is getting ridiculous. With tablets running os that are on phones, using cellaur data, and getting a little smaller with each new tablet, how are we going to able to tell the difference between phones and tablets. Besidesmy iPhone can do everything other tablets can and vice versa who's to say my iPhone isn't a tablet?

I continue to disagree. My girlfriend has one and there is nothing I ever want to do with it that I can't do on my phone, PERIOD. I can see it being useful for media consumption, but I don't travel enough to arrant a movie player, and there is no argument that as a music player it is completely on par with iPhone. To plenty of people it is just a giant phone, but to those same people, this Motorola device will be just a giant android device.

I don't play veggie samurai on anything, nor do I really have an interest to. Wasted enough money on iOS games that take all of 15 seconds to beat. No thanks!

The entire commercial was meant as a joke, not a slew of selling points. This should be crystal clear when they start comparing it to things like the ten commandments. You don't seriously think they were SERIOUS about why the ten commandments tab is inferior to their product, do you?

I say spend more time noting what YOUR product can DO, not what you feel the competition CAN'T...especially since any product has the potential to suck, regardless of how much the other products do OR don't suck.
Interesting. This was Apple's marketing strategy with their Mac v PC ads for about five years.

Let them call it what they want. Technically speaking, it's pretty similar to an iPhone or itouch as others pointed out. It lacks calling and a camera as well as other networks besides 3G and wifi. But it's all about size with the iPad. Reading, surfing, and playing games on the iPad is far batter than on the iPhone/touch.

I think we are losing perspective in that...which company produced the FIRST cellular telephone?
Sure they may have fell out of the cellphone market, but who is not to say they will find a niche in the tablet market.
Motorola has alot of ties to Sony, especially with the Playstation phone.
Much of the new Droid firmwares (especially Honeycomb, which will be first featured on this tablet) are stepping up all things gaming. So possibly they are trying to up their tablet a notch in gaming purposes alone.
It's not like Apple has suffered with the release of their iPad. Ultimately to continue in the market (even for the evolution of the iPad) something has to be done to "one up" a rivals device.

When the iPad first came out, i thought it was stupid and was on the bandwagon with saying it was just an oversized ipod touch. Well months later after being kinda intrigued by one, i bought one. And surfing the net, watching movies, reading books and PDFs. Playing games on it is really fun too. (not that i am game much but i do from time to time) my son loves it for all his games and books that are on there, and he loves to play the interactive educational games too, and hes only 1 1/2 years old. Its not just an over sized iPod Touch.

You can put me in this category. I'm not quite a fanboy, but I love apple products, and to me it is just a big iPhone. I don't own one, but my best friend does and overall I've played with it for several hours.

The bigger display does increase its functionality, but it's pretty much just a big iphone...that can't make calls or take pictures. That said, I'm saving up to buy one for myself!

fanboi much? I'm not saying apple doesn't make some fine products, but everything is not their idea. IBM released a touchscreen cell phone in the 90s. In fact, even the "i" in iPhone, iPod, iPad was originally used by the iPAQ.

I hope motorola's tablet stacks up well against the iPad. Competition is good for innovation. If android wasn't creeping up on apple the iPhone 4 would probably look like the 3GS with a better camera.

All that being said, with how much money I've spent in the app store, my next tablet will most likely be another iPad.
