  • The iPhone Camera App's Hidden Panorama Mode Feature Revealed

    It has been known for quite some time that Apple has been working on bringing the panorama camera mode to the iPhone. Recently, iOS developer/jailbreaker Conrad Kramer (@conradev) figured out how to enable the panorama mode within the original Camera app. Popular iOS developer, Grant Paul (@chpwn) has packaged the feature in a jailbreak tweak called “Firebreak” which according to him should be released by tomorrow on Cydia.



    As of right now, the interface for the panorama feature is simplistic and not very appealing, but it gets the job done. To use the feature, you simply turn the panorama mode on by clicking the panorama button in the camera options menu, then move the iPhone in the air as shown in the on-screen diagram (seen in the first picture).

    The final product will show you a picture with a panoramic view, as seen below:

      Yea, there are already FREE apps that do that and look good so a cydia app would be kinda useless. K, its a nice find but way too late for crApple to bring it out now. Unless they do what they do and remove all the panorama apps from the Apple Store which they probably would.

      It isn't all that. I have it activated. Apple NEEDS to fix the bugs and yes I know there is a reason they didn't activate it in the first place.

      Why do you refer to Apple as crApple?

      All you have to do is go to APP Store and search on panorama.

      However, some of us would rather get the apps through Cydia...

      Should be noted that the panorama mode requires either the iPhone 4 (and I would imagine will work on the 4S either via official update or jailbreak) or iPad 2 as it utilizes the built in gyroscope. Sadly, I only have a 3GS

      I can confirm that it does work with the 4S - no jailbreak required if you use something like iBackupBot

      1. install iBackupBot
      2. Backup your phone in iTunes.
      3. Leave iPhone connected, close iTunes.
      4. Run iBackupBot & select the backup you just made.
      5. Look for Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist - double click to edit
      6. Add the following to the main <dict> (not the camera configuration part):
      <key>EnableFirebreak</key>
      <true/>
      7. Click save and close the edit window.
      8. Restore the modified backup to your iPhone (I did this using iBackupBot).

      Wow! After using the app I can tell why Apple has hidden it. There are plenty of apps in the appstore that do this but none of them produce as awful a picture as this built in feature. Try DerManDar in the appstore instead.

      One of the best ones is Photosynth. Very user friendy. You can post the panorama on email, Facebook or even to an online interactive gallery.
