  • Apple Taking Substandard Accessory Makers to Court

In case you missed it during what's been a busy week of governmental sanctioning of jailbreaking and international Apple product releases, there has been another story on the back-burner that is surfacing again in full this weekend. And perhaps its an issue with which many MMi readers are well acquainted.

If you've ever purchased a knock-off brand iPhone charger, for example, only to have it fall apart, short out, or fail to work altogether only a short while after purchasing it, Apple is looking out for you. Actually, Apple is also looking out for itself in hopes of getting you to stop buying cheap third party accessories and stick with the official stuff.

If you haven't heard, Apple is heading back to the courtroom, but this time it's Apple that's doing the suing. The tech giant has filed a complaint noting that many iPod, iPhone, and iPad accessories are of "inferior quality and reliability, raising significant concerns over compatibility with and damage to Apple’s products."

Of course, this is far from a general swipe at third party accessory makers. Specifically, Apple is calling attention to Accstation, Boxware Corporation, Crazyondigital, Eforcity Corporation, Everydaysource, Itrimming, and United Integral. The Bloomberg report, however, mentions that an additional twenty companies may also wind up within Apple's legal cross-hairs.

Apple Inc. sued companies it said are selling unauthorized electronic accessories such as chargers, speakers and cables for the iPod music player, iPhone and iPad tablet computer.
In a nutshell, Apple is not only strengthening its choke hold on businesses that take away dollars from the tech giant, but also making an issue out of the reality that many accessory makers aren't adequately modifying or updating their products to reflect the changing models and tweaked specifications of new generation products - a reality that, according to Apple, may render some iDevice attributes or features unusable.

I only had ONE Apple USB cord fray on me and I figured out why immediately: Because I was the stupid ***** pulling it out of the USB port by the cord and not the plastic tip.

Once I stopped doing that, all was good, no fraying since. Of course it will fray and pull apart if you pull by the cord. You're abusing it.

Just a comment-So basically, apple is going to take food off families plates and cause foreclosures. Apple will start to go after unofficial Apple repair facilites too!! btw-I have had both positive and negative purchases on ebay.

My iPod works fine after going through all the eBay chargers, and each one costed me about 25 cents. 5 bucks for 6 months of flawless charging? Sweet!

i baby my devices/cords etc and mine came apart. It had light travel and sometimes rolled it up. Should not break apart. All my other cords dont do it. They are junk , plane and simple.

i have went through like 3 iphone sync cable the one that originally came with my phone fell apart after a month or so and so have all the other ones. i even bought one of those things that let you play music off your iphone or ipod through your car speakers to have that fall apart. i hope apple somewhat wins in that make them use higher quality because those knockoffs are usually cheaper however apples own stuff isnt necessarily the best to use lol

I'm happy with my generic accessories. Apple needs to back off. This would be like Honda saying you should only buy Honda parts and accessories for your Honda car. Hey, Apple its my iPhone not your iPhone! Dont tell what I can or cant do with my iPhone.

Thats what you say, lets see the ratios of people who've had their batteries fry, or have a fire start with cheap accessories, and the people who bought original accessories and had nothing happen to them...
Apple makes their accessories perfect for their own products, they may not be stable after a long time(6 months+). I bought 1 cheap USB charger and Earphones on EBay, The USB charger caught on fire and burned my documents which i needed for work, and the Earphones worked GREAT!!! until 2 days after i bought them the left side stopped working, so what was the point? Then i bought an Original one, it's been working since then (2 years)

You may have different experiences but Apple makes their accessories for THEIR products, and anyone to duplicate that should be sued.
      Look at it this way,
Would you wanna buy a charger for 3$ and have it last 2 weeks or spend 20-30$ and have it last 2 years?

Anyways Benefits if you just buy original:
      -You don't void your warranty
      -You don't screw your iDevice
-If something gets messed up in your accessories, there's the Apple Store which can replace it.

I refuse to pay $20 for a cable or $30 for a charger.
For those buying special chargers that turn off charging why? Don't all phones stop charging when full? It's internal to the phone. Think about if, you connect the phone to a USB port, how does the computer know when to stop charging? It doesn't the phone knows.
I bought 20 sync cables, 4 charge cable with aux cable built in and component video out with stereo sound and charge built in for under $50. Some of the sync cables are in the same place as my apple cables, in the trash.
Someone said technology comes at a price. Last I checked some fruity company is sitting on $30+ billion. For some reason buying my cables elsewhere isn't hurting them too badly and it gives me the ability to buy other more important things, like iPhones etc.
Apple quality maybe a little better but not $19 more per cable.

Bought the Belkin 2 port car charger and it works flawlessly! If only I could make the USB cord last more than two mos.

Well maybe if apple made something useful like a wall charger with multiple plugs I'd use it.

I'm really starting to dislike the way apple does business recently.

I love the amount of people on here with phones that retail (without a contract) for $500+ too cheap to spend $20-$30 on a charger. You'll probably be pissed at Apple's build quality when your **** doesn't work anymore.

I hope everyone who ******* about apple's products knows there is a 1 year warranty on it, and they will replace chargers, headphones and USB cords. I had a set of headphones replaced because they were blown and a USB cable replaced because it was starting to fray. Took me a whole 10 minutes, and I was out $0 for the replacement.

When I buy stuff, my one biggest considerations is the warranty. Every manufacture has problems, but at least look for one with a great warranty replacement program.

It's why I recommend dells, even though I had a couple problems, their warranty department always made it right.

Everyones had a variety of experiences here. I think this is much ado about nothing. I've used my apple supplied cords and we still have all of them back to the 1st gen iphone and our older ipods and they are all still in one piece and working well, only one is a little loose when used with the iPhone 4, but that is it. We also have used both the Apple car charger and other brands without any problems. Apple does like to control product, but as this website shows they don't always win that battle now to they?
