  • How to Jailbreak Using redsn0w 0.9 (Windows)

    {last updated November 1st, 2012}

This Windows only guide (OS X guide here) will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using redsn0w 0.9. The current version of redsn0w 0.9 is 0.9.15b3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK (with the exception of 4.3.4/4.3.5/5.0 where it is a tethered jailbreak), meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3G | 4.3.4
    • iPhone 3GS | 4.3.3
    • iPhone 3GS | 4.3.4
    • iPhone 3GS | 4.3.5
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.0
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.0.1
    • iPhone 4 | 4.2.9
    • iPhone 4 | 4.2.10
    • iPhone 4 | 4.3.3
    • iPhone 4 | 4.3.4
    • iPhone 4 | 4.3.5
    • iPhone 4 | 5.0
    • iPhone 4 | 5.0.1
    • iPad 1 | 4.3.3
    • iPad 1 | 4.3.4
    • iPad 1 | 4.3.5
    • iPod touch 3G | 4.3.4
    • iPod touch 3G | 4.3.5
    • iPod touch 4G | 4.3.4
    • iPod touch 4G | 4.3.5
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.0
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.0.1
If you prefer the simpler version of this guide with no pictures, click here.

Alright, let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the Windows version of redsn0w 0.9.15b3 from mod.my/redsn0wwin0915b3. Double-click the zip file to unzip it, and open the redsn0w folder to see the redsn0w.exe file.

Making sure your device is connected, double-click redns0w to launch it. You will see the redsn0w home screen - press the Jailbreak button.

Before you do anything on the next screen, power off your device by pressing and holding the sleep button (the button on the top) until the slide to power off screen comes up. Slide to power off. NOTE: As of iOS firmware 5.1.1, this step is not necessary.

Alright, NOW you can press Next on the redsn0w page which tells you to power off your device. NOTE: redsn0w will IMMEDIATELY ask you to press and hold the sleep button on the device, then continue holding it while pressing the home button, then continue holding the home button while letting go of the sleep button. Make sure your device is in your hands before pressing Next in redsn0w. NOTE: As of iOS firmware 5.1.1, this step is not necessary.

After successfully following the prompts of holding buttons down (this is entering DFU mode for the device), redsn0w will tell you it is Exploiting with limera1n. You can now let go of the home button on your device. NOTE: As of iOS firmware 5.1.1, this step is not necessary.

redsn0w will go through a few screens, telling you it is waiting for a reboot, then popping up a new window with various status messages as it jailbreaks your device.

Once that is done, you'll be shown a screen asking what you'd like to do. The default action (which we'll be doing in this guide) is to Install Cydia. You're welcome to check any other boxes you'd like, but please only do so if you know what you're doing. Press Next when you've selected your choices.

redsn0w will now tell you Uploading ramdisk, which will take a few seconds, and then say Done! Once it says Done! it is safe to close redsn0w, as the rest of the jailbreak process will happen on the device itself.

Your device will now scroll a bunch of command line messages as the jailbreak completes. After a minute or so of the scrolling text, you will see the pwnapple logo with some more status updates (the final step before your jailbreak is complete).

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

Thats why ultrasn0w doesn't work for you. You can only downgrade to 4.1 and upgrade the baseband to 6.15.00. This can break your GPS and will disable you from using stock firmware on 4.2.1 and higher.

That's the only way you'll get ultrasn0w to work, is on that iPad baseband 6.15.00. You can only upgrade to it by being on fw 4.1 or 4.2.1.

If you wish to then upgrade to a newer fw version than 4.1 then SHSHs are required. You don't need SHSHs for 4.1 so restoring to that should be easy, just for the baseband upgrade.

Redsn0w is what you want to upgrade the baseband with once downgraded to 4.1.

So downgrading to 4.1 modem firmware first, do I need to reflash the whole iPhone image or just the modem firmware and how? and then what version of ultrasn0w do I use?

4.1 is not the modem fw. But yes you'd downgrade to 4.1 fw version first. You can use whatever ultrasn0w is in Cydia.

First downgrade to 4.1 (get the ipsw from the Downloads section here on MMi) then you can come back and I'll walk you through upgrading the baseband (which this is the modem fw).

Then consider if you want to stay on 4.1 or check for SHSHs for a higher fw version to upgrade to. Note that if you do this, you cannot go to iOS 5 anymore as you can only use 5.0.1, and ultrasn0w is not yet compatible with 5.0.1.

I updated to 5.0.1 and it worked for a bit. Now my phone is stick on the boot screen and I can not reboot the phone to restore it. Any ideas. I was using the latest version of redsn0w. Tried rebooting with redsn0w and nothing. Just stays on the loading screen. I also tried jailbreaking it again and it gives an error on the screen. Need advice on hoe to restore back to factory settings.

You need to get the phone into dfu mode to restore it. Just use dfu from redsn0w the timing is kinda tricky when you cant power your phone all the way down(shut off).

Request for help jailbreaking ATT IPhone 4 IOS 5.0.1 model A1332. I have just received a used ATT IPhone4 from my sister and trying to use it with my T-mobile regular (not Micro-Sim) SIM card. Is there anyway to unlock/jailbreak this IPhone4? I have googled and read many instructions online and tried some of them with no success. I don't know where to start. Could someone give me some directions to successfully jailbreak my newly acquired IPhone4? I have tried tinyumbrella, set the RFU mode, backed up the shsh blobs,etc...I am using win xp pro on my laptop to do all these steps. Thank you.

Hello I need help please. I have an iphone 3gs new bootroom, running 4.2.1 with 6.15.00 baseband and it is not booting up. if I try to boot it up regularly, it just gets stock on the apple logo. If I place into DFU mode and then choose just reboot tehtered from redsnow I'm able to get the little pineapple and the little circle showing the iphone is working and I can even sync it with Itunes, but the pineapple logo never goes away, it's just stock and about every 30 second the Iphone makes that sound it makes when the phone is charging. Help please. Thank you
