  • Apple Hiring More CDMA Engineers

A new Apple job posting, showing that the company is looking for more engineers with CDMA experience, is just the latest bit of evidence that Apple is hard at work on an iPhone compatible with Verizon's network. The Cellular Systems Performance Engineer will need to be proficient in GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA, and CDMA technologies. All but the last protocol are supported in currently shipping iPhone 4s; Verizon's network uses CDMA rather than the GSM standard used by AT&T.

Apple has been adding CDMA engineers to their development staff since at least 2008; job listings two years ago sought CDMA testing and certification engineers. The pace of hiring has intensified lately, however: if you search for CDMA on Apple's job site, there are a number of open positions calling for familiarity with that protocol.

The rumor of a Verizon iPhone has been bouncing around almost as long as there's been an iPhone. Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said on Monday that Verizon is so eager to get the iPhone that they're giving in to more of Apple's demands, kicking in a subsidy of as much as $400 per phone.

I say GSM is better than CDMA.

Please bring the iPhone to Sprint or T-Mobile. Personally I could care less about Verizon getting the iPhone.

Im tired of all the TALK...just make it happen already!! I'll stick with my GSM network because I don't want to have to visit my carrier, every time I wish to switch phones. CDMA technology gives the carrier too much control.

I'll leave AT&T the day Verizon gets the iPhone...Why? 3G coverage! I don't have it despite AT&T giving me date after date for over a year. **** AT&T

Verizon is set with LTE *with need of accessories* their actual 4G capable phones wont be releasing until early next year. So they might be taking long as they may be bringing an extra special sutrprise with the iPhone. Besides, iPhone 5 next year so LTE on the iPhone + Verizon is a must.

This is actually probably the best evidence so far, I think it's funny how it's not posted by Messany though.

Isn't that a core limitation of CDMA, and not something they could change without doing a GSM overhaul?

I can't wait for it to happen just so we can stop talking about it.

I really hope a Verizon iPhone happens this June with iPhone 5, but I really doubt it. Apple is interested in Verizon because of their upcoming 4G LTE network. But from what I've gathered, it wont be ready in time for iPhone 5. Even if it was, it wouldn't be widespread enough for many people besides those that live in major cities to enjoy. Verizon's speed might not be as great as AT&T's, but their 3G network is much, much more widespread. Verizon has the infrastructure to make their 4G network widespread, but it will take time. Maybe we'll see iPhone 6 on Verizon. I really hope so.

^^^Verizon has the most cash, and Apple's cost a lot of it.
