  • Apple Hiring More CDMA Engineers

A new Apple job posting, showing that the company is looking for more engineers with CDMA experience, is just the latest bit of evidence that Apple is hard at work on an iPhone compatible with Verizon's network. The Cellular Systems Performance Engineer will need to be proficient in GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA, and CDMA technologies. All but the last protocol are supported in currently shipping iPhone 4s; Verizon's network uses CDMA rather than the GSM standard used by AT&T.

Apple has been adding CDMA engineers to their development staff since at least 2008; job listings two years ago sought CDMA testing and certification engineers. The pace of hiring has intensified lately, however: if you search for CDMA on Apple's job site, there are a number of open positions calling for familiarity with that protocol.

The rumor of a Verizon iPhone has been bouncing around almost as long as there's been an iPhone. Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said on Monday that Verizon is so eager to get the iPhone that they're giving in to more of Apple's demands, kicking in a subsidy of as much as $400 per phone.

At&ts 3G coverage sucks. I live in Logan Utah and only half the city has 3G. I'm only 60 or so miles from saltlake city.

I can't wait for it to happen so that Verizon can experience all the same network problems. Even though they have other smart phones, people who have iPhones use way more data.

You know, with most CDMA carriers, you can simply go to their website and punch in your ESN/MEID serial number and your other phone will be activated quickly. No questions. I can do that with Sprint.

Sent from my iPhone 4 using ModMyi
I love the SIM card but other than that, GSM is a crap protocol.

Sprint FTW! I might come back to the iPhone if that happens. Doubt it will come to Sprint though......

It REALLY p*sses me off to watch their commecials advertising 4G, when they absolutely DO NOT have anything resembling 4G. 3GPP is NOT IP packet based LTE, and if it isn't IP packet based LTE, well.....it isn't 4G. Period.

Well, yeah...... but Sprint isn't using LTE. They use WiMAX. They have tons of WiMAX cards and hotspots. They also have two WiMAX "4G" phones and a bunch more coming. Just sayin. But you're right, there is no such thing as real 4G until LTE Advanced and WiMAX 2 come out.

There is NO WAY the iPhone 5th gen will have LTE 4G. It took apple a year after AT&T started using 3G to put it into their iPhones. At least we know they are working on something good, since CDMA is always ahead of GSM tech.

In canada, we have CDMA iPhones I believe. Telus and Bell but it sucks if you decide to change your device since it carries a $30 reconnection fee. Personally I don't use CDMA since this year alone I tried 30 devices!!! 30x30 and there goes my money.

CDMA don't make any sense what so ever, at least for me! Why? I run a service department... We receive over 500 emails a day and also make at least 50 calls a day too. Many time you're on hold with vendors so if I have to listen to their on hold music I will go nuts. As a result I reply to email, browse Internet, do what ever. Apple already restricts, trying, us and a CDMA iPhone is 10 times worst...
