  • BigBoss Updates Semi Tether Package - Improves Stability

Just last week, BigBoss released a package on Cydia called SemiTether, which allowed users to reboot their tethered jailbroken iOS 5 device without the need to connect it to the computer. It wasn’t a full tethered boot though (hence the name) and limitations arose along with several reported issues. BigBoss recently released a new version of SemiTether (v0.91), which incorporates the new mobile substrate by Jay “Saurik” Freeman. The new semi-tethered mode is supposedly more stable.

BigBoss mentioned the following in his release:

v0.9.1 incorporates Saurik’s new mobile substrate. Thanks to Saurik, we are entirely rid of all the daemon patching – this means there’s no more daemon patching or restarting. Most the semi-tether work is now done by mobile substrate. The semitether package from the repository now protects your iOS 5 notification center plugins and gives you the option to patch mobile safari so that it will work on the non-jailbreak reboot mode. I’m still looking into patching mail, if possible.
Below are the list of changes found in the update:
    1. Much more stable with new mobile substrate
    2. Can patch safari so it works in the non-jailbreak reboot mode
    3. App to monitor the status of your semitether and reapply. Check after cydia installs.
What the semi tethered mode does is allow users who have used a tethered jailbreak for their iPhone to at least use it for some of the basic functions upon having to restart their iPhone (without having a computer nearby). Previously, because of the required tethered boot, if your iPhone for any reason was restarted, you would be stuck at the Apple logo until you went to a computer and used RedSn0w’s “Just Boot” option. With the update, you can use the Phone, Messages, and every other stock app on the iPhone (including Mobile Safari with this update). You still cannot use the Mail app (although you can use a gmail app for example from the App Store instead) and no Cydia tweaks or apps work either (which is a given).

BigBoss did provide a word of caution though regarding the updated version, which can be found below:

This new version will definitely solve all the flakiness problems we had in the past. However, be aware that this is a total rewrite of mobile substrate. Until this appears in a community source, you are beta testing so installing it is entirely at your own risk.
All in all, if you find yourself often stuck waiting to have to perform the “Just Boot” feature in RedSn0w then you may want to consider using the Semi Tether package from BigBoss. If you don’t have any issues with the tethered jailbreak, it is recommended that you avoid using the semi tether until further notice.

Did any of you decide to get it? If so, share any experiences below!

Uninstall them all and then install them together at the same time. Be sure to update mobile substrate first.

N e one know what's with the white icons?

Couldn't seem to find this anywhere - if I'm using the ultras0w unlock on an iPhone 3GS - upgrade to iOS 5 (and preserve the unlockable baseband), would I still be able to make phone calls using this semi-tether? I know the phone will work just fine once it is booted while tethered, but since the unlock relies on mobile substrate and ultrasn0w, just not sure if I'll still be able to use the phone if booted semi-tethered.

********** is illegal stuff, he added a feature to detect if Install ous.app exists in /Applications and if it exists it will kill it.

      He's the Big Boss.
You wanna use Big Boss' tools? You play by Big Boss' rules.

Or you can moan and sputter, about how unfair it is that other people restrict your freedom. Insisting that you get what you want, oblivious to the social impact of your wants, isn't usually considered a sign of great maturity.

      No sh!t Sherlock.

Isn't the whole reason we jailbreak because we want to do whatever we want with our iPhone?
At that point what makes Bigboss any different than apple if the Bigboss is trying to restrict our experienc?

      P.S.
      Get off my nuts.

Do you want me to answer?
Because your next comment makes it sound like you don't want me to answer.

This is not the reason why Semi-tether uninstalls **********. Installing ********** also installs *******, which patches actual systems files to allow you to install non-signed .ipa files. Unfortunately, the way in which semi-tether works conflicts with the files that ******* patches and ends up causing an endless reboot if you install semi-tether and then reinstall **********/*******. There is a nice explanation on the BigBoss website (essentially, if ******* were to use MobileSubstrate instead of patching files there would no conflict).

Finally, ********** is not just useful for those who pirate software, but for those who like to try before they buy. There have been a couple of rather expensive apps ($30+) that I would not have bought if I wasn't able to give them a try out first - thankfully ********** allowed me to do this. While reviews are great and everything, sometimes you really need to use an app to make sure it will suit your needs - it's nice to be able to do that without throwing away your money.

In other news, I did some digging around and found that if you use the ultrasn0w unlock, the semi-tether will still work but you won't be able to get a cell signal until you boot tethered - which definitely sucks since the whole point of the semi-tether was to be able to use the important functions of the iPhone (aka the phone). THough base on what semi-tether does, this makes perfect sense. Hopefully the untethered jailbreak will come out sooner than later.

And to the rest of the thread about Install ous you need a life
I use it to intall IPA's I have saved from the App store nothing wrong with that, I back up older versions because sometimes the newer versions updates are buggy and I want the older versions
More than one use for the program you know

No you will need to be in DFU mode.

Sometimes the reboot after installing from cydia screws something up gets you stuck on apple boot logo sot the safest way is NOT to hit Reboot Now button in cydia after whatever install you made, rather, close cydia and than manually shut down your iphone than enter DFU mode.
