  • How to Jailbreak Using redsn0w 0.9 (OS X)

    {last updated November 1st, 2012}

This OS X only guide (Windows guide here) will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using redsn0w 0.9. The current version of redsn0w 0.9 is 0.9.15b3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3G | 4.3.4
    • iPhone 3GS | 4.3.3
    • iPhone 3GS | 4.3.4
    • iPhone 3GS | 4.3.5
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.0
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.0.1
    • iPhone 4 | 4.2.9
    • iPhone 4 | 4.2.10
    • iPhone 4 | 4.3.3
    • iPhone 4 | 4.3.4
    • iPhone 4 | 4.3.5
    • iPhone 4 | 5.0
    • iPhone 4 | 5.0.1
    • iPad 1 | 4.3.3
    • iPad 1 | 4.3.4
    • iPad 1 | 4.3.5
    • iPod touch 3G | 4.3.4
    • iPod touch 3G | 4.3.5
    • iPod touch 4G | 4.3.4
    • iPod touch 4G | 4.3.5
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.0
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.0.1

If you prefer the simpler version of this guide with no pictures, click here.

Alright, let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the Mac version of redsn0w 0.9.15b3 from mod.my/redsn0wmac0915b3. Double-click the zip file to unzip it, and open the redsn0w folder to see the redsn0w icon.

Making sure your device is connected, double-click redns0w to launch it. You will see the redsn0w home screen - press the Jailbreak button.

Before you do anything on the next screen, power off your device by pressing and holding the sleep button (the button on the top) until the slide to power off screen comes up. Slide to power off. NOTE: As of iOS firmware 5.1.1, this step is not necessary.

Alright, NOW you can press Next on the redsn0w page which tells you to power off your device. NOTE: redsn0w will IMMEDIATELY ask you to press and hold the sleep button on the device, then continue holding it while pressing the home button, then continue holding the home button while letting go of the sleep button. Make sure your device is in your hands before pressing Next in redsn0w. NOTE: As of iOS firmware 5.1.1, this step is not necessary.

After successfully following the prompts of holding buttons down (this is entering DFU mode for the device), redsn0w will tell you it is Exploiting with limera1n. You can now let go of the home button on your device. NOTE: As of iOS firmware 5.1.1, this step is not necessary.

redsn0w will go through a few screens, telling you it is waiting for a reboot, then popping up a new window with various status messages as it jailbreaks your device.

Once that is done, you'll be shown a screen asking what you'd like to do. The default action (which we'll be doing in this guide) is to Install Cydia. You're welcome to check any other boxes you'd like, but please only do so if you know what you're doing. Press Next when you've selected your choices.

redsn0w will now tell you Uploading ramdisk, which will take a few seconds, and then say Done! Once it says Done! it is safe to close redsn0w, as the rest of the jailbreak process will happen on the device itself.

Your device will now scroll a bunch of command line messages as the jailbreak completes. After a minute or so of the scrolling text, you will see the pwnapple logo with some more status updates (the final step before your jailbreak is complete).

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

After jailbreaking and Just Booting, I went into Cydia and every time I go to sources it gives me an error "GPG error: http://repo66.ultrasn0w.com ./ Release: The following signatures were invalid: NODATA 2"

      Any help?

That repo is down right now. Try .org at the end if you need ultrasnow.

Nevermind, I gave it some time while constantly checking the Changes section and it just took them a sec, did a complete upgrade and I'm all set

Are you trying to restore to a regular 5.0.1 firmware or a custom one?

      Hey all...
      I was running 5.0 tethered on my iPhone 4 ATT. I re-ran the newest redsn0w (0.9.10b3) and clicked "jailbreak" so I could get untethered. However, I forgot to uncheck "install Cydia" on the JB screen and now my phone is stuck in a loop and won't start up. I've tried restoring through iTunes and using the various Extras on redsn0w but no luck. Any advice? Did I just brick myself? :-{

Forgot to mention that the re-JB actually worked, but still gave me a notice saying it was "tethered". Ever since then I can't get started up. I try "Just Boot Tethered" option and it works until I get the pwnapple on my iPhone screen, but then it never really starts. I hear a buzz like it's charging, but I still never get to a home screen. Also, if i put it back into DFU mode, I can't restore through iTunes. I try to restore and update to 5.0.1 (since I'm on 5.0 now) but that winds up getting an error after downloading the firmware. All help is appreciated! Thanks!

A big "Thank you" to all folks who have made the redsnOw JB possible. I have gone from 4.3.3 iphone 4, to restore 5.0.1- and then JB and apart from a couple of minor glitches like a white "settings" icon for a while it's been smooth and brilliant.
Now as soon as iSwerve host is "reachable" again and iSwerve is updated, hint, it'll be perfect.

      has something changed?
I have installed / re-installed JB for redsn0w .9.10b3... supposedly will allow untethered JB for my Iphone 4 running 5.0.
I follow the instructions, yet at the end, I am informed this is a "*tethered Jailbreak*"
Anyone else having the same issue? Perhaps User Error is at play? lol

I have jailbreaked my iPhone4, version 5.0.1, OSX the start of the month, but the unlock feature was not available at the time.

I need the phone unlocked as I travel internationally frequently and use multiple SIM cards when in other countries.

The notes said the unlock was not available YET for 5.0.1

      Is this now available?

There is no unlock for an iPhone 4 on 5.0.1 (unless you were on a previous firmware and preserved your baseband).

I'm using a CDMA iP4 with 5.0.1. I've tried this ten times and nothing happens. After redsn0w gets to "exploiting with l1mera1n, it just boots up as normal. Not bricked, but not (jail)broken either....any clues or comments? (by the way, I tried the b4 and b5 versions)

Hey guys, hoping you could help me out. I have tried putting the jailbreak onto my iPhone 4 with 5.0.1 but it keeps taking it to factory restore mode. I have successfully completed the jail break on my sisters iPhone 4 but for mine it just wont work.

I have factory reset my phone to see if that would help but it's the same deal nothing works. Any suggestions would be great!

      Kind Regards

Hi all. I haven't jailbreaked an iPhone since my original 3 back in 2008.

Got shown some tricks of the jailbreaked iPhone 4 the other day and thought I'd give it a go.

I successfully followed the above instructions with redsn0w 0.9.19b5 and got my iPhone rebooted untethered with Cydia installed. I assume that means the jailbreak was successful?

Unfortunately when I fire up Cydia and press Featured or Themes it just goes into a wait made (spinning wheel top right) and never loads anything.

If I press Changes I get a listing but when I try to install any of them I get the title Running and a progress bar but it eventually times out.

      X POSIX: Operation timed out

Anyone got any clues as to what's going on?

Oh, and I have tried a Refresh in Changes several times.

I have tried dozens of times now to jailbreak a friend's iPhone 4, on Verizon, running 5.0.1, by using redsn0w 0.9.10b5c. Every single time, I put it in DFU mode, the jailbreak process begins, gets all the way to the "Waiting for reboot" and the phone just boots into normal mode, falling out of DFU mode. I have no clue at this point what to do to get it to stick in DFU mode to complete the process. I continue to end up with the phone simply rebooted normally, running fine, but no jailbreak. Any help would be appreciated.
