  • Siri Ported to iPad, Apple's Servers Still Preventing Usefulness

Siri was almost immediately ported to the iPhone 4 after the 4S's release by @stroughtonsmith. Nine days later Siri is up and working on the iPad.

    Kind of.

Developer @stroughtonsmith was able to get Siri working smoothly on the iPhone 4 and has been privately working with other developers such as @jackoplane to make further progress. As of right now progress is still slow in regards to getting Apple's servers to authenticate Siri's requests. Since most of Siri's functionality relies on Apple's servers to do the heavy processing the personal assistant, as of now Siri on the iPhone 4 is nothing more than a functioning skeleton.

Despite @jackoplane's and the jailbreak community's slow progress in developing a way around Apple's server restrictions, @jackoplane successfully ported Siri to the iPad 1. Our own Joshua Tucker (@joshmtucker) vouched for @jackoplane and the legitimacy of his claims.

Siri running on the iPad 1 confirms our earlier suspicions that Apple's claim Siri can only run on the iPhone 4S is pure marketing hogwash. Apple would only need to change the authentication process used by its servers, sell Siri in the App Store, and reap the rewards. However, Apple has maintained that Siri is still in beta, albeit publicly. Perhaps when Siri out of Beta Apple will expand its availability.

Which is exactly why it is NOT available on the iPhone 4 for now!

      +1

any performance increase in graphics etc. that is provided from the A5 will be pointless as developers are not producing apps at a level that make use. This will take sometime, and by then i5 (not intel's ) will be around the corner. I see this as a smart move by Apple, and smart moves are just what they do.

Agreed, but I still believe that Apple knows about restrictions due to either hardware or bandwidth problems on older devices. Like the writer says, it could be possible that Siri will continue to be on iPhone 4S as a beta until it is completely ironed out. It doesn't make sense for Apple to restrict Siri to just the 4S. They can still drive product and cost with the iPhone 4 if Siri was included.

And BTW, I wouldn't want Siri as an app from the AppStore. There's way more functionality having it integrated .. IMHO

Read carefully, while Siri is operational on the iPhone 4, it is not functioning with Apple's servers. At this time, you would find little to no use for it. Have patience.

Apple should of made it available to iPad 2 owners considering it uses the same processor as the 4s.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but people using iPhone 4s with T-Mobile, would NOT be able to utilize Siri because Siri is not autonomous, but instead gathers data via 3G/4G. In other words, the VERY sluggish data transfer rate of The Edge Network, which is HORRIBLE!!!

My guess is that it will be in "beta" until the flow of customers waiting for the 4S dwindles.

Yes it has been ported, but it will not work correctly until it can contact the servers. Siri gleans it's info from the Apple servers which are not accessible yet and until then it is just an empty AI brain. Since the port is a work in progress I don't even think you can get it yet anyways.
Besides, the 4S is great. I was gonna hold off but I had an upgrade available. It is supa-fast! Glad I got it. As far as Siri goes... I love talking my text! Well worth the upgrade from an iPhone4.

      One thing to note:

There's absolutely nothing hardware or device related that would restrict a user from using Siri. Apple is generally not known for "beta" testing software on fully-released products, especially when it comes pre-loaded. It works just fine on my iPhone 4 and Siri has been tested on other devices as well (obviously the iPad 1 as well).

Yes, but all I'm trying to say is that if any response/feedback from Siri, comes from an Apple server, then anyone, with an UnLocked iPhone 4/s, using T-Mobile would not be able to use Siri. On the contrary, if the response (from Siri) were generated from within the phone, itself, then no High-Speed connection would be necessary & I'd be hunting for a 4s... because I'm with T-Mobile!!!

I think it is bull crap that apple says it can't run on the iPhone 4 because it dosnt have the a5 chip. The iPad 2 has the a5 chip. Were in the hell is siri on my iPad?

And if a way is found around the servers Apple will surely block it again... If you want Siri bad enough buy a 4S! If you can live without it then skip the 4S. I bought one but not really for Siri but more for the A5 and better camera and I upgrade every 12 months as my business plan allows for it anyway.

I think that's crap! I had Siri from the beginning on my 3GS and later my 4 and used it daily. I just bought another iPhone 4 when I switched to Verizon 3 months ago and now I don't have Siri because they shut down the app. I think if I had it before I shouldn't have to upgrade to get it back. I am eagerly looking forward to an iPhone 4 port!

Apple also said that multitasking on the 3G wouldn't work. People such as myself ignored that and used tweaks to get multitasking on the iPhone 3G and surprise it wasn't a pleasant experience. I don't think apple is being dishonest. They don't need Siri to sell the iPhone 4s if Siri never never existed they would have still sold millions of iPhones. That's just what they do sell millions of iPhones period no trickery needed at this point.

I think that wrong how apple didnt give siri to at least to the iPhone 4 owners for people like me to spend their hard earned money on these great phones i truly hope and pray that the dev team comes up with the siri port soon it would be fun to have and a very useful feature to have as well on my iPhone 4
