  • Sprint Putting an End to Unlimited Data?

Sprint is killing some of their unlimited data plans.

Starting in November 2011, Sprint is going to start denting their data users. Ironically enough, though, it's not for smartphones. The caps plan to set limits on people who use Sprint's data network for computers, tablets, mobile hotspots, mobile broadband users, and other things of that nature that use absolutely massive amounts of data. Smartphones, which generally load mobile, size-light versions of websites, won't affect Sprint's network that much. The target by Sprint appears to be the size-heavy website loaders that clog up Sprint's network by streaming full length videos, uploading/downloading media, and loading full webpages using hotspots or connect cards on their tablets and PC's. The biggest cap will allow for 5GB of data. Sprint's new data chart, effective starting this November, can be viewed below:

The plan does not affect smartphone users like the iPhone. The iPhone will continue to support unlimited data, as will other smartphones including Android, and Windows Phone 7; excluding using the personal hotspot feature, which is capped at 5GB. There will be overage fees just like any other service provider, for anyone that goes over the 5GB cap (assuming they selected the 5GB cap plan). The cap will apply to both 3G and 4G networks. Overage costs will be 5 per Megabyte that you use over your cap. That's $1 per 20MB that you use over your cap.

When using data roaming, prices differ a little bit. Data roaming is very expensive, which is why it's no surprise that people generally choose to turn that option off in their iPhone network settings. Sprint will only give you 100MB of roaming data on the 3GB cap plan, and 300MB of raming data on the other two data plans. For each Megabyte that you go over those caps, you will be charged 25. That's $1 per 4MB that you use over your cap.

It's important to understand that if you have unlimited data already that you will not be grandfathered into it. Sprint will automatically change your data plan to the capped version. So this will not be like Verizon, or AT&T where you could have signed up for the unlimited data plan before they change how much cellular data users use. But as the iPhone 4S just came out on the Sprint network, they still want to attract as many customers as possible, so they will probably keep the unlimited data plan on the smartphone market for a little while longer. After that, absolute power will corrupt absolutely, and smartphone users will all be forced under caps.

Could this be Sprint answering the cries of iPhone 4S users complaining about Sprint's slow 3G data speeds? Share what you think below.

Anthony are you asking if Sprint is putting a hault on unlimited data because ppl are complaining about there SLOW speeds?

Basically there gunna charge Sprint customers more for the same slow data speeds lol

5GB is a lot. My data plan in the UK is capped at 1GB. I don't get charged for going over but once I hit my cap, speeds slow down dramatically.

While I was in the US I had a HTC Touch Pro with Unlimited Data. I miss those days.

Wow Head slap why in the world would u defer this from Sprint just capping there data speeds?

So basically there gunna charge Sprint customers more for the same slow data speeds lol

I'm not trying to bash u Anthony but please think of a more logical question next time like:

Do you think Sprint has had enough with users using to much data on there iPhones that pushed them to want more money or because they might want to upgrade there towers to a faster Internet so there just going to charge everyone more?

First off, Anthonys comment was valid. Yours is just absolutely ridiculous and makes NO sense. Sprint is capping data because all of their Non-Smartphone devices are hogging all the bandwith--clogging it up and making it slower for all these brand new data hogging iPhone 4's and iPhone 4s's.

Also, when you want to insult someone, be sure to use correct grammar. There is referring to a place. Their is possessive. They're is the contraction for They are. Therefore, you should be using "their iPhones" "their towers" and "so they're"

This isn't about smartphones. They're killing the bandwidth hogs to make more room for smartphones.

Yep all the ******** paid off now we will get a price hike soon. The network was overloaded with all the new 4S we needed to give it time for sprint to adjust there network.............. It same with jailbreaks ***** ***** be patient..........

I doubt that it's going to help enough to make a huge difference. Sucks for the people that bought wireless broadband from Sprint only to be screwed out of it now. Overages at $50 a gig... nobody is going to be complaining about ATT and VZW prices now...

Yes the iPhones are now hogging the data, wow do I need to spell this out for yall?
This issue was never brought to the light before Sprint started selling the iPhones so logically it's ppl using the iPhones(smartphones) that's slowing down the data flow so dramatically

      Um duh ?

The statement AND question are valid. Your reply makes you look like a tool, and your grammar makes you appear ignorant. Be more appreciative of our writers please.

Sprint hasn't sold enough iPhones for the iPhone to be the culprit. The slow data speeds were prevalent before the iPhone launch.

Before you bash anyone, maybe you should look at your own English first
Your "logical" statement is full of run on sentences and misusage of words. Please refrain from criticizing the writers, if you can not write properly yourself

The author is being very nice about this. This is pretty much exactly what AT&T did, and everyone threw a fit. I believe Sprint users should be in as big a uproar as AT&T users were. Sprint advertises there "unlimited data on ANY device". And they bash both AT&T and Verizon for limiting data to only phones in there commercials.

Sounds like your friend should have a laptop or pc for heavy data. This is the exact reason everyone is capped.
Smartphones are for on the go applications like email, look up directions or find a restaurant not download music and movies til there's no more music or movies. If peeps would use their heads and apply common sense we probably wouldn't be in this totalaristic world of wireless carriers dictating how you should use your smartphone.

Ever since the iPhone was released the data speeds have decreased dramatically. At home I barley get over 300 on my Sprint Nexus S and that's late at night. During the day they are below 100. In rural areas I get over 1000. I'm wondering how many iPhone users will return their iPhone within the 14 day return period?

Future Headline: "Sprint no longer offering Unlimited iPhone data plans." Verizon thought they could handle it but just look at what happened. Give it time and it will happen.
