  • BigBoss Releases Semi-Tethered Jailbreak Tool

BigBoss offers a somewhat convenient solution for Tethered jailbreaks on iOS 5.

Have you ever been in the situation where your iPod or iPhone is running a tethered jailbreak and then the battery dies, or you are forced to reboot it after problems, or after installing a tweak that needs a reboot? Has this ever happened to you in a place where there isn't a computer available with Redsn0w for you to use? BigBoss has a solution that will at least make your device usable until you get the chance to boot tethered using Redsn0w again.

Usually when your iDevice powers off after being jailbroken tethered, you will be unable to power it on. It will hang on the Apple logo forever. It turns off fine, but it won't turn on. This new tweak available for free from BigBoss will allow you to reboot your iDevice and use every stock app on the iDevice. There are of course, some caveats to this, because nothing this awesome can be flawproof you will not be able to use Mail and Safari until you boot tethered. This brings more convenience to your tethered jailbreak. Say your iPhone dies and you need to make a call, but you don't have a computer to boot tethered and all you have is a wall charger. If you charge it up, you will be able to turn it on (jailbreak tweaks and settings will be dormant and unusable until you boot tethered) and you will be able to text and make phone calls regardless of having been tethered. The iDevice will take just a tad longer to boot up than normal, but this is expected. This is the hack taking its effect on the device.

    How Do I get it?
You won't find it in the main BigBoss repo. You will need to add the following repo:
    http://thebigboss(dot)org/semitether/
(that is a "." instead of a "(dot)" of course I used the parenthesis for linking purposes.)

When you add that repo, install the Semi-tether from it, then reboot, then boot tethered. You are now Semi-tethered and will be able to reboot your iDevice in a Semi-tethered state.

Personally, I am unable to connect to iTunes with my iPod Touch 4G after installing this, as well as a couple of friends of mine. iTunes brings up an error saying that it cannot connect to the iPod Touch. This isn't much of a problem though, since most of my syncing is done over the cloud and my iPod Touch running iOS 5 is PC-free. So if you are worried about the iTunes error, don't be. You really don't even need iTunes anymore.

So just to repeat on the upsides to this. You will be able to call/text, download apps/media, listen to music. You just won't be able to surf the web or send/read email until you boot tethered again. The idea of this release is to allow you to get out of the tether loop so that you can at least use your device if it is an emergency. Once you boot tethered again, you will be able to use your jailbreak downloads as usual. Nothing will be lost.

So will you be installing the Semi-Tether on your iDevice? Are you happy that something of this nature was released? Share a comment below!

Had this problem as well, none of my icons were themed after installing this, even after removing *******...Ill wait for an untethered jailbreak.

The only app that retained its theme was Maps. It did theme all of my apps and restore my dock app placement with infinidock once but, once was not enough for me to keep it. I voted themes over useability.

This semi-tethered JB does not work for me. i installed, rebooted, Tethered rebooted, and it still wont boot by itself. Just sits on the apple symbol.

Just tried it again after an update for this appeared on cydia. Didn't work again for me. Uninstalled it and it reloaded the springboard just to find a bunch of white icons instead of the stock app icons. Rebooted to see if that would help anything and nothing would reboot. After first time trying to boot, redsnow kept bringing up Unexpected error messages everytime I pressed the sleep button to enter DFU mode to boot.

I haven't tried to remove semitether yet, but I can tell you this: This is not making my decision to buy galaxy nexus difficult haha! Not trying to start a flame war but I am getting so fed up with this shiz...

Ok, I have questions about how this works with certain apps. First off, how does the semi-tether state affect apps like Facebook, Twitter, myYearbook, and others that use internet besides Safari and Mail? I know that many internet apps call another process to view webpages(UIWebView, or something like that?), and I am not clear on whether this is considered part of Safari, and thus affected by semi-tether state or not. Also, seeing as jailbreak tweaks, and specifically any jailbreak tweaks related to notification center or also things like SBSettings, cannot be used, and such mentioned jailbreak tweaks supposedly cause a respring loop, how does one goes about deactivating such tweaks before or once in semi-tethered state? Are they automatically deactivated? Or the way I read it, if they are even installed on the device, and one attempts to boot the device to semi-tethered state, then the device will go to this respring loop? Thus effectively, this semi-tethered state is not functional, therefore the device is effectively NOT a semi-tethered jailbroken device, and still just a tethered jailbreak?

The widgets are automatically deselected upon reboot seeing how they rely upon being jailbroken to be in use. Every app works unless it says otherwise. If you need to use the web, d/l a different browser from app store previous to rebooting into semi stock state.

Ok so tried all this junk and no luck.. looks like the semi-tethered does not work after all. No worries though but i really am enjoying the jailbreak, notification center has lot's of potential for widgets...

it works fine for me. only thing is when I do boot semitethered, all my apps in my folders scatter out, because I have folderenhancer installed, and that supports infinite icons, where as a semitethered booted iPhone can only support 12 icons per folder. it's a hassle but its definitely worth

sorry mate, I was having a problem where all my icons would get pushed down 3/4 of an icon length, and my dock was gone, and spotlight didn't work. so I restored and re jb and I think the problem either came from semitether or music to iPod for ios 5, I don't plan to reinstall either of those again

Got a problem here with semi tether. After i jailbroke with redsn0w and installed semi-tether, everything was working great.Installed a few tweaks and am satisfied with it.However, a few hours later, the screen will suddenly turn black/ when i off the phone, it will boot into a non-tethered state.I then put my phone into DFU mode and tried to boot tethered with redsn0w(extras>just boot tethered). However, it will only be stucked at the pineapple booting screen.Tried it with redsn0w and ibooty, and everytime this happens, it will be stucked at the pineapple/apple logo and not proceeding.Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA!

Latest winterboard update/mobile substrate/semi-tether seems to have fixed the non themeing icons after installation of semi-tether.

Semi tether works fine, if you and others are having problems its either your Phone or your doing something wrong

I have it on two different Iphones a 4 and 3gs it works very reliable too

Ok is it red snow you used?
If so then choose extras and then IPSW and choose 5.0 for your phone ( not 5.0.1 if you have it) then Just boot

hold the power and home together count 1001, 1002, fast to 1009 and let go power still holding the home and in a few secs the boot will start

I have done this with both phones multiple times the past week with out a hitch
