  • BigBoss Releases Semi-Tethered Jailbreak Tool

BigBoss offers a somewhat convenient solution for Tethered jailbreaks on iOS 5.

Have you ever been in the situation where your iPod or iPhone is running a tethered jailbreak and then the battery dies, or you are forced to reboot it after problems, or after installing a tweak that needs a reboot? Has this ever happened to you in a place where there isn't a computer available with Redsn0w for you to use? BigBoss has a solution that will at least make your device usable until you get the chance to boot tethered using Redsn0w again.

Usually when your iDevice powers off after being jailbroken tethered, you will be unable to power it on. It will hang on the Apple logo forever. It turns off fine, but it won't turn on. This new tweak available for free from BigBoss will allow you to reboot your iDevice and use every stock app on the iDevice. There are of course, some caveats to this, because nothing this awesome can be flawproof you will not be able to use Mail and Safari until you boot tethered. This brings more convenience to your tethered jailbreak. Say your iPhone dies and you need to make a call, but you don't have a computer to boot tethered and all you have is a wall charger. If you charge it up, you will be able to turn it on (jailbreak tweaks and settings will be dormant and unusable until you boot tethered) and you will be able to text and make phone calls regardless of having been tethered. The iDevice will take just a tad longer to boot up than normal, but this is expected. This is the hack taking its effect on the device.

    How Do I get it?
You won't find it in the main BigBoss repo. You will need to add the following repo:
    http://thebigboss(dot)org/semitether/
(that is a "." instead of a "(dot)" of course I used the parenthesis for linking purposes.)

When you add that repo, install the Semi-tether from it, then reboot, then boot tethered. You are now Semi-tethered and will be able to reboot your iDevice in a Semi-tethered state.

Personally, I am unable to connect to iTunes with my iPod Touch 4G after installing this, as well as a couple of friends of mine. iTunes brings up an error saying that it cannot connect to the iPod Touch. This isn't much of a problem though, since most of my syncing is done over the cloud and my iPod Touch running iOS 5 is PC-free. So if you are worried about the iTunes error, don't be. You really don't even need iTunes anymore.

So just to repeat on the upsides to this. You will be able to call/text, download apps/media, listen to music. You just won't be able to surf the web or send/read email until you boot tethered again. The idea of this release is to allow you to get out of the tether loop so that you can at least use your device if it is an emergency. Once you boot tethered again, you will be able to use your jailbreak downloads as usual. Nothing will be lost.

So will you be installing the Semi-Tether on your iDevice? Are you happy that something of this nature was released? Share a comment below!

For some reason, after Jailbreaking my iPod Touch 3G with Redsn0w 0.9.9b7, it was semi-tethered. I used Redsn0w just boot, and checked if this package was installed, and it wasnt. So for some reason, Redsn0w gave me a semi-tethered Jailbreak. Although, Safari and Cydia dont work, if im not in Just Boot state, just like this semi-tethered. So really there is not pros to this. Im just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

This is normal behavior if you've installed nothing from Cydia. If you jailbreak iOS 5 with redsn0w beta, you get a pseudo-semi-tethered jailbreak -- but only if you do not have Mobile Substrate installed -- and almost everything in Cydia requires Mobile Substrate (it's saurik's framework that lets developers make neat modifications to the system and to other apps). Without Mobile Substrate, you have a pseudo-semi-tether with just Safari and Cydia non-functional, but almost everybody wants Mobile Substrate.

I realized after I installed something from cydia (it didn't require mobilesubstrate). So I installed the Semi-tethered package. Just to be sure, installing this package, will allow me to semi-tether boot even if I have a cydia app installed?

I honestly never understood why Saurik never built this into Mobile Substrate. The mind boggles.

The latest version fixes the iTunes issue and BB is working with saurik (saurik says it's saurik not Saurik) to make Mobile Substrate solve many of the issues - a new version should be available in 2 - 3 days which fixes many of the remaining problems including eliminating the 90 second reboot delay.

These is a nice emergency tool, but I still feel the better idea is to not download cydia packages on the go while on a tethered jailbreak. I am willing to bet the VAST majority of people that run into this issue do so not because of low battery but because they are downloading packages that require a reboot in the end. Would also be nice to build into cydia a warning stating that said package will likely need a reboot after installation.

The answer to questions like this is always no. When it works it will be released. It's that simple.

Not until a jailbreak is out for the 4S and likely it will already be untethered so no need for this tweak.

5.0 is actually not buggy at all. It's all those tethered jailbreaks that make the software less stable. You can easily update to 5.0 and just chill out until the untethered comes out. Don't get it twisted, I'm not trying to knock you - I'd do the same thing and just wait, but if you do want to use 5.0 unjailbroken there will be no issues with the OS. I understand a plain iPhone without jailbreak isn't exactly the funnest device, however imagine how all the 4S users are feeling right now - I'm on that page myself. Not even a tethered jailbreak for us yet. Give it time, these programmers and hackers need every moment it takes them to develop these exploits and programs. If it was easy than everyone would be doing it. All we can do is cross our fingers and wish them luck in posting something soon - that is what I'm doing. Good luck to everyone with there iDevices, as you know we will be spoiled shortly with a new untethered fully functioning jailbreak in no time. I just hope the 4S doesn't take as long as the iPad 2 did ; \ - I don't think I can stick it out for another 2 months with plain old iOS 5 haha. Cheers to the engineers who make jailbreaking possible! Thanks as always for your effort, there should be more donations in my opinion. Once the 4S is jailbroken, whom ever may create the exploit, will be receiving a donation from me for sure. Good luck again, and god bless - not any specific god. LOL.

I've been in this situation before; phone crashes, battery dies and I have a tethered jailbreak and no phone... This is a great solution until an untethered jailbreak comes out...just awesome!!!
