  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 Released

And today, the Dev Team has another new update for you.

Redsn0w is a popular jailbreak tool for iOS. This new version doesn't tout any new features but there are some important mentions for some of you who are running a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5. Currently, the new version supports both Mac and Windows, and the download links are below:

    Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 for Mac
    Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 for Windows

So what's new about Redsn0w? The Dev Team posted this on their blog regarding version 0.9.9b6:
Quote Originally Posted by Dev Team
Update #14: Weíve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers. For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you donít even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup). The cosmetic fix is to the visual countdown you see when going into DFU mode.

Itís okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5. Just choose ďJailbreakĒ again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked). If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w canít yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if itís already been jailbroken).
So basically, there are two fixes. One is cosmetic and one is functional. Cosmetic is of course referring to how it looks. The countdown part of Redsn0w that displays when you are putting your device into DFU mode had a small issue in the previous version that has been tweaked. The exact issue at this point in time is unknown.

The functional update has to do with iPhone 3GS users who are jailbroken with Redsn0w 0.9.9b4-5 with the 06.15 baseband. Some of you reported a network crash when you used location services on iOS 5. The Dev Team is sorry about that and rolls out this new update to you guys that will fix the problem. You can simply plug in your iPhone 3GS and rejailbreak it with this version of Redsn0w right over the jailbreak that you already have. Don't worry, you won't lose anything. Remember that old-bootrom iPhone 3GS's will still be able to have an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5. But, be aware that if you do have the old bootrom that Redsn0w cannot auto detect your firmware and that you will need to specify it manually.

So go ahead, download it, and have fun with your jailbreak!

One should also remember that when it comes to jail-breaking, it can be much better to remain on your current FW (4.x in this case) until more of the add-ons have been updated. If you just got or will be getting the 4[S] soon, it may be wise to retain your old device, at least for the time being. I still have my old boot-rom 3GS that's still on 4.2.1 (untethered), as 4.x is not available for the newest phone. If your old phone is a 3G[S] or older, just make a micro-sim card adapter from the old sim card and you've got a backup device.

Why does everyone keep saying they are gone? I know comex got hired but I don't recall anything about GeoHot other than the PS3 situation. Either way, who is to say they aren't still working on jail-break related things and either submitting them under another alias, or passing them off to someone else for release? I don't see why any of them would just up and quit what they obviously loved doing.
Geohot was hired by Facebook, he doesn't have the free time like he used to for jailbreaking. As for Comex, why risk getting fired at Apple? They have not quit what they are doing, just doing it for bigger corporation with steady income.

Is the iPad 2 ever going to see a jailbreak? Seven months and nothing.

The current version is not IOS 5 compatible. You need to use the beta version. As for where to get it? I don't know, I just know that's what I read in an earlier article on modmyi.

You can find it in the iOS 5 cydia compatibility front page story from a few days ago.

My iPad 2 is jailbroken. Don't have it handy now so I can't tell you specifically what OS is on it, but I jailbroke it on jailbreakme.com.

I'm surprised there is not some sort of soft reboot yet, that would allow a tethered JB to stay intact.

Hard reboot = turns phone off & on (default reboot)
Soft reboot = restarts at a low level boot position so not to lose the JB but enough to restart everything.

I haven't a clue. I asked chpwn on twitter if it's possible, but he must not have got it.

I believe that Respring = Soft Reboot. Some packages in Cydia REQUIRE a Hard Reboot. When I had a problem with a tethered jailbreak, the first thing I tried was a respring..... that would fix it about 7 out of 10 times......

Thank god, maybe now i can JB my old bootrom 3GS. I've been trying forever since the first release of Redsn0w on ios5 and it's crached, white cydia icon, never worked. Maybe now it's work. Do i need an IPSW for the old bootrom specifically? I only downloaded 3gs ios5 IPSW, so... maybe it'll work now.

No it will not.. Respringing just Resprings and doesn't reboot. I was scared of that before I did it bit it seems to work I jailbroke my 4 to iOS 5, and preserved my base and at 03.10.01 so even the gevey card maintains my phone unlocked.... It's pretty sweeeeeet!
