  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 Released

And today, the Dev Team has another new update for you.

Redsn0w is a popular jailbreak tool for iOS. This new version doesn't tout any new features but there are some important mentions for some of you who are running a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5. Currently, the new version supports both Mac and Windows, and the download links are below:

    Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 for Mac
    Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 for Windows

So what's new about Redsn0w? The Dev Team posted this on their blog regarding version 0.9.9b6:
Quote Originally Posted by Dev Team
Update #14: Weíve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers. For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you donít even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup). The cosmetic fix is to the visual countdown you see when going into DFU mode.

Itís okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5. Just choose ďJailbreakĒ again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked). If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w canít yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if itís already been jailbroken).
So basically, there are two fixes. One is cosmetic and one is functional. Cosmetic is of course referring to how it looks. The countdown part of Redsn0w that displays when you are putting your device into DFU mode had a small issue in the previous version that has been tweaked. The exact issue at this point in time is unknown.

The functional update has to do with iPhone 3GS users who are jailbroken with Redsn0w 0.9.9b4-5 with the 06.15 baseband. Some of you reported a network crash when you used location services on iOS 5. The Dev Team is sorry about that and rolls out this new update to you guys that will fix the problem. You can simply plug in your iPhone 3GS and rejailbreak it with this version of Redsn0w right over the jailbreak that you already have. Don't worry, you won't lose anything. Remember that old-bootrom iPhone 3GS's will still be able to have an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5. But, be aware that if you do have the old bootrom that Redsn0w cannot auto detect your firmware and that you will need to specify it manually.

So go ahead, download it, and have fun with your jailbreak!

Connect your phone to computer, open redsnow, and choose boot tethered and follow instructions

So if you shut your phone off and loose power, the phone will still work once turned on right? Just the jailbreak apps and programs won't work till you boot tethered again right?

You need to run Redsnow again but this time go the the Extras tab and then select Just Boot, and once you boot cydia should be fine.

People really need to learn to be patient. An untethered jail-break is on it's way to the A5 based devices (iPad 2 and the 4[S]) for iOS 5. One should also remember that when it comes to jail-breaking, it can be much better to remain on your current FW (4.x in this case) until more of the add-ons have been updated. If you just got or will be getting the 4[S] soon, it may be wise to retain your old device, at least for the time being. I still have my old boot-rom 3GS that's still on 4.2.1 (untethered), as 4.x is not available for the newest phone. If your old phone is a 3G[S] or older, just make a micro-sim card adapter from the old sim card and you've got a backup device.

Why does everyone keep saying they are gone? I know comex got hired but I don't recall anything about GeoHot other than the PS3 situation. Either way, who is to say they aren't still working on jail-break related things and either submitting them under another alias, or passing them off to someone else for release? I don't see why any of them would just up and quit what they obviously loved doing.

Tethered Jailbreak from redsnow is good. I've been running it since it came out and I've had no problems at all.

Ok question. If I have a 3GS with bootrom 05.16.02 is that considered the old or new bootrom ?? I can't seem to find any clarity on this.

Ok 05.16.02 baseband not bootrom. I have the model MC640LL. Trying to figure out if I can do an untethered jailbreak somehow. Currently running 4.3.5 with redsnow tethered. Is this considered a 3GS with old bootrom ??

Bootrom is not determined by baseband but the iboot version : Old bootrom is 359.3, New bootrom is 359.3.2

To check , go to devcie manager, iphone has to be in dfu mode.

A quick question...if I do use the tethered jailbreak and I have to reboot my phone for whatever reason, what happens to my phone? Will it just boot into normal iOS5 and I lose the jailbreak...or will it prompt me to plug my phone into iTunes when i reboot? If i just lose the jailbreak, but my phone is still functional then I'll go ahead and go with the tethered JB...but if my phone is unusable 'til I can hook it up to iTunes then i want no part of it!
To do a tethered reboot, get the latest version of Redsn0w.
You won't need to re-jailbreak, but the TRICKY part with the tethered reboot is putting your iPhone in DFU mode. If you don't know how to do that, I'd wait for the untethered jailbreak to come out..

Kind of afraid to use this, used sn0wbreeze the day iOS 5 was released and didn't realize till 5 hours later that my phone wasn't working (no calls no text messages) and then it took another 2 hours just to restore it to the stock firmware, been jail breaking since the original iPhone and never had a problem before, maybe that was just a freak occurrence, really miss having a jailbroken phone though so might just give this a try when I have a few hours to spare, just in case...
