  • iFan Charges Your iPhone The Green Way

Here's a cool iPhone accessory that should please both green technology advocates and critics of the iPhone's less than truly long-lasting battery. The winds of changing chargers are blowing thanks to designer Tjeerd Veenhoven, who has successfully tweaked a PC fan and merged it with a rubber iPhone case. The end result: the iFan, a unique homemade gadget that lets you fully charge your iPhone (it takes about six hours) using wind.

While one-quarter of a full day is, unfortunately, a long time to wait to charge your iPhone, there are practical applications for folks on-the-go or avid hiking enthusiasts (the outdoors type, in general) where the iFan is still a worthwhile charging mechanism to tote around. In the future, however, Veenhoven says he plans to update and further modify the blade structure of the fan to increase charging efficiency and, thus, the total length of time needed to fully charge the iPhone.

Yes, critics will says it's bulky and unwieldy. But demand for such green innovations for our gadgets has become such that even Apple is said to be ardently researching the prospect of solar panels for future iDevices upgrades. Of course, it will be a while before that research actually yields a change in product design. So, for now, it's up to third party accessory makers to carry the "green" banner. And that's exactly what people like Tjeerd Veenhoven will do all the way to the bank.

Solar panel iPhone case anyone? Whoever thought putting a mini windmill on an iPhone is dumb in my book...

Now if only I could fan the inside of my iPhone, it gets really hot when tethering. I get getting hot on jailbreak apps, but tethering is a basic function

He should have just made the fan that plugs into the connector with a cord so you can put it out your window when you're driving or something

Use an office fan to spin the fan on the iPhone or does this defeat the purpose? Lol

Hanging it out the window while driving = 20 min charge time or loss of iPhone

Just like adding "in bed" to the end of a fortune makes it funny, adding "for an iPhone" to the end of a bad product idea makes it newsworthy.

For every tree-hugging fool, there's some company trying to part him from his money with a feel-good product that likely caused more damage to the environment in its production and shipping than it will ever offset by the electricity it produces. A real wind turbine has a specially designed blade and alternator to maximize efficiency. This thing is a portable fan with a diode in an ugly case that won't fit in your pocket.

Might as well try charging your iPhone using dissimilar metals and some citrus fruit. Or better yet, just plug it in TO THE WALL and check the air pressure in your tires and insulation in your attic if you REALLY want to have a measurable impact.

If it has this AND solar on the backside, we're in business! He just needs to partner up with Novothink (makers of the iPhone solar charging case) and then we're covered day or night out in the wilds!

I can't tell you the number of times I've been stuck out in the Kalahari or Gobi deserts without access to reliable power, but having wind/solar iPhone would be neat: when is the iPad version coming?

I have a use for this. We go trekking in Nepal and also recently climbed kilimanjaro. It's a good alternative to the solar chargers which can be heavy.

Why not a solution all it's own

A Jiggle Battery, just like the flashlights you jiggle to power on

That way even when your playing a game, or if your running and it's in your pocket it will be charging

Sure it will make the iDevice a little bigger but place like 10 of those things inside of it that are all small so when the iDevice gets tilted they slide creating a charge, of course they will need to be placed at different angles to work better cause no one wants to constantly flip there iDevice, but if you shake it for say 30 sec you get 5-10 more min just like the flashlights

      Invent that
