  • Apple's 2012 Redesigned iPhone 5 Was Steve Jobs' Last Hurrah

The significantly redesigned iPhone 5 we expected to see earlier this month won't be unveiled until 2012. But perhaps what's most noteworthy about this report is that the iPhone 5 will represent the last iPhone refresh that late Apple icon Steve Jobs was heavily involved with. Saying that Jobs was "intimately involved" with the iPhone 5 is Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar.

The iPhone 4S is not the last major project that Steve Jobs worked on.
Kumar reveals in a note to investors Monday that his sources at Apple confirm that the iPhone 5 will, indeed, be significantly redesigned. The next iPhone "will have a slimmer profile and larger screen size but with the same dimensions as the iPhone 4S ... The iPhone is also expected to have LTE, or Long Term Evolution--what's sometimes referred to as 4G."

Hearing the same thing from another connected informer, Brooke Crothers of CNET reports Monday that "another source, who I spoke with this week and who claims to have knowledge of the redesign, said the iPhone 5 is a 'complete redesign.' This is a very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited."

On the staggeringly successful opening weekend launch of the iPhone 4S, it's unlikely that anyone wants to expend much energy on iPhone 5 rumors today. But the rumor of the redesign isn't the story here. The story is that the next iPhone will be another Steve Jobs' brainchild. While we've all heard that Jobs' had mapped out a future product strategy for Apple before his passing, this is the first we're hearing about Jobs being intimately involved with the design of an iPhone that's another generation ahead of the model introduced just three days ago.

They did with the iPhone 4.

That was a coincidence. Now there are two phones with the number 4 in them.

There is no such thing as coincidence when talking about anything Apple.

What does the "4" signify if it's not that it was the 4th iteration of the iPhone? If you're calling it a coincidence, then you're implying the "4" stands for something else.

While I'm at it, what does the "S" mean in "3GS" and "4S?"

iPhone 4 is the only model that had a number referring to its generation version. The first iPhone was called simply "iPhone" and did not have 3G data capability. This was before 3G really started taking off in mid/late 2007 and 2008. Next came the redesigned iPhone 3G. This one had 3G data capability, so they stuck the 3G suffix on there. The 3rd generation iPhone in 2009 had redesigned internals with lots more features, but retained the same exterior design, and so it was called the 3G[S]. 2010 saw the 4th version of the iPhone, but only the 3rd exterior design. This 4th generation was named simply "iPhone 4".

This caused some confusion because some people thought it might have 4G data capability. Others mistakenly call it "4G" simply because it's the 4th generation, and "G" is often used as an abbreviation for "generation". So this current version is the 5th generation iPhone, but it retains the same exterior design, and as such is called the 4S. So yes, next year's model will be the 6th generation and could very well be called the iPhone 6. But who really knows what it will be called.

I think part of the confusion comes from the data speed labels. 3G data is supposed to be the "3rd generation" of cellular data transmission rates. And because Apple put that data transmission label as part of the iPhone name for 2 years, it now causes confusion for subsequent years that aren't using any data transmission rate labels as part of the phone's name.

Sorry but why is Steve jobs getting credit for the iPhone exactly? Wasn't it john ives and the other guy that is boss of ios development who are the driving forces behind the iphone. and ipods?

The only things I was certain about with this latest release was that it would be called the iPhone 5 and there would be no 64Gb version.

On that note, I predict the next release will be called the iPhone 42

The what is your explanation for the iPhone 4?

      4G, no.
      4 what?
      4th generation.

People are just saying that it will not be iPhone 5. They did skip a number 2. There was no iphone 2. the iPhone 3G was because it had 3G data. Then they added the S, which said to stand for speed. The 4 because of the generation.

speed. It's only a name, people. And to go from iPhone 4s to iPhone 6 sounds completely stupid to me. I think some people are jelly they bought they iPhone 4s, and not the hyped up iPhone 5, and won't be able to upgrade, unless not for the discounted price.
