  • Siri Purposely Designed To Have A Slight Attitude

As the weekend passes by, many iPhone 4S users are continuing to enjoy the quirky responses that Siri gives and Apple’s intelligent personal assistant built into the iPhone 4S is being raved around by many all over the web. Recently the folks over at The Wall Street Journal spoke with Norman Winarsky, one of the co-founders of the original Siri and they discussed how they approached instilling Siri with a personality. (For those of you who didn't already know, Norman Winarsky was the one who claimed Siri was going to be a "world-changing event.")

According to Winarsky, “There were many conversations within the team about whether it should be gender neutral”or “should have an ‘attitude.’” Norman ended up not going to Apple and still works at SRI and he mentioned that before the software was bought by Apple, the company decided to go with Siri having “occasionally a light attitude.”

Apple ended up focusing on keeping Siri’s personality “friendly and humble – but also with an edge,” according to a different person who actually worked at Apple on the Siri project. The same source said they were thinking of how they would want a person to respond when developing the software.

The Siri group is said to be one of the largest software teams at Apple and the crafted responses are trying to create an emotional tie to the customer. This seems to be a good marketing strategy as they will continue to attract new and existing customers alike to use the software and remain loyal with Apple. The work that the Siri team put in as well as the work the Apple has put into the software seems to have been largely successful thus far and with more functionality coming in 2012, it only seems like Siri will continue to impress more and more people globally.

Furthermore, developers have already ported Siri to the iPhone 4 and are working on making the port more successful. It seems that Siri is not iPhone 4S exclusive and perhaps Apple may open up Siri to older iOS devices at a later point as well. I am not sure what to believe when people discuss this as both sides of the argument seem to make sense to me. On one end, Apple could have put Siri on the iPhone 4S exclusively not only to help the sales of the product but to also limit the beta to one iOS device instead of multiple, thus helping iron out bugs. On the other hand, maybe the extra hardware the iPhone 4S is packing really helps make Siri work smoothly. Either way, it's not like users have much of a choice in this legally.

What do you think of Siri, has it been impressing you? Do you think Apple is purposely keeping Siri iPhone 4S exclusive for now just to promote sales for the iPhone 4S? Share any thoughts and comments below!

How come every one is talking about Siri as a 'she'? My Siri is Male - or at least has a very masculine voice?
Is it possible to change Siri's gender?

LOL, I was trying to set up a reminder and Siri understood what I wanted, but couldn't complete the task (due to problem with the reminder app). Getting frustrated, I asked why and Siri replied, I don't know, I wonder that myself sometimes. I burst out laughing and all my frustrations were gone. I love it.

Love the above site - it's getting updated all the time as people find different aspects to Siri's attitude.

Yes you can change the voice you have to go to settings general and click Siri then you can select a different voice.

what's stupid is I have the original Siri app and it ran just fine on my 3gs. I can't imagine apple made some amazing improvements to the front end that forbid it from working on the 3gs, let alone the 4, or the ipad 2.limiting Siri to the 4g is simply a marketing ploy to get more people to upgrade. there isn't enough to get me to move off of my 4 so i'll just wait for the 5..

You have to have almost perfect English at times. And it does not insert punctuation.

Since Siri is the only new feature that is worth a damn on the new iPhone 4s, we are going to be reading article after article for the next year about how great Siri is. In my opinion, Siri is just a novelty that will wear off over the next few months. Who wants to be walking around talking to their phone all the time looking like a moron? I did have one other question. How is Siri a world changing event when it only works in the USA?

Okay, so last night I told Siri, "Open the pod bay doors," over and over and it started to get surly with me after awhile. Then I just started saying "Siri," like at least 20 times and eventually it vibrated my phone and said, "YES?"Then today, I think it still remembered last night, and when I tried to activate Siri, it cut me off, and said, "Uh oh, There seems to be a problem, Master."It continued to cut me off several times.I tried using the mic for typing and it cut me off again prematurely.I had to reset siri to get it to work again... but I worry that she won't forget or forgive.Be wary.

Holy ****. Now it's just flat out denying me. It recognizes my input "Send a text message to XXX," pauses, and comes back, "Sorry, something has gone wrong, Master.."
      RUN!!!!

You dictate punctuation. Say 'period' for periods, 'question mark', etc.
