  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 Released - Mac Only For Now

Just a few minutes ago, the redsn0w testers (@redsn0w_testers) Twitter account tweeted out that the iPhone Dev-Team released an update for redsn0w (bringing it to redsn0w 0.9.9b5). The primary goal behind this release was to update redsn0w with the new public URLS for IPSW files. Basically, this allows first-time iOS 5 jailbreakers to not have to supply an IPSW file to jailbreak on iOS 5.

On the iPhone Dev-Team Blog, there was also mention that a little bit of functionality from PwnageTool was added to this release. In the Extras section in redsn0w, you can choose an option called "Custom IPSW" which will build an IPSW file without the baseband for 4.3.3 or iOS 5 GM (for iPhone 3GS and 4 only at this point). The team plans on updating PwnageTool for iOS 5 when an untethered jailbreak comes out.

Here is the full update on what is new and important with redsn0w 0.9.9b5 (READ CAREFULLY. THE WARNINGS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT):

    Quote Originally Posted by iPhone Dev-Team Blog;
Update #13: With today’s official iOS5 release, redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b5 to include the public URLs for the IPSW files. This way, first-time iOS5 jailbreakers don’t need to supply the IPSW file manually. It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S.

Because the jailbreak is currently only tethered for most devices, we’re not going to release a new PwnageTool yet. Instead, we’ve decided to build some of PwnageTool’s functionality into redsn0w (since you need redsn0w to “Just boot tethered” on every power cycle anyway). The new “Custom IPSW” button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now). Remember not to accidentally restore to the stock IPSW after you create the custom one! The custom one begins with NO_BB_ (for “no baseband”).

You must enter “Pwned DFU” mode before trying to use the NO_BB_ IPSW with iTunes (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5).

Version 0.9.9b5 is currently only available for Mac, until we can do more testing on the Windows version of “Custom IPSW”.

We’re currently working on a normal compatibility update for current ultrasn0w unlockers. After that we’ll try to fix the iBooks issue on jailbroken iOS5.
As mentioned in the title as well as the body of Update #13, this version of redsn0w is for Mac users only until more testing on Windows is done.

Download the new redsn0w 0.9.9b5 beta for Mac right here:

    redsn0w 0.9.9b5 for Mac

    Reminders:
    • Redsn0w is still a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS old bootrom users. Otherwise, there is no untethered jailbreak at this time.
    • You cannot jailbreak your iPad 2 on iOS 5 at this time

Untethered if your 3GS has the old bootrom otherwise tethered for now. Wait for an untether.

If you don't know which bootrom you have, try this:

      Different problem actually.
What's happening is that you're using a tethered JB, but not tethering.

To fix, shutdown the phone, go into DFU mode and use Redsn0w's "Extras-> Just Boot" option.

You'll have to do this every time you reboot or reset the phone, until a new untethered Jailbreak comes out. This is why "tethering sucks". ;(

okay do i need to be on 4.3.3 for the JB to work?
i keep getting stuck in the process

i have one at 4.2.1 and another 3gs at 3.0.1

      1. Open redsn0w.app, click "Jailbreak" (or Extra's" then click "Just Boot" once jailbroken for a reboot)
      2. Hold both the power and home button down for 10 seconds (does not matter if the phone is on or off)
      3. After 10 seconds release the POWER BUTTON ONLY, your phone will kick into DFU mode and redsn0w will see this and do its stuff, once you see redsn0w installing you can release the home button.

My only problem at the moment is within Cydia, when I try to add a source or search for something using the keyboard, Cydia crashes..... I have rebooted a couple of times already.......any idea's?
      PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!

thanks to those who gave me advice, found a link on another forum as per below

(hay! Seems like I have solved the problem!!
I found out Cydia crashes when it try to bring up the virtual keyboard and the other user with nickname HK360 I think he got such nickname should be because he is living in Hong Kong like me.
So I try to change the international Setting from "Hong Kong" to "United States" and Cydia can successfully bring up the keyboard to add source now!! WOO HA!)

I updated my gf's iPhone 4 to 5.0 and JB using redsn0w 0.9.9b4 (tethered) because she messed up her 4.3.3 JB 5 min after I did so no SHSH was saved and to be honest the JB works great BUT there are so many things that are not yet compatible with iOS 5 that I'm staying on 4.3.3 until a untethered JB is released and compatibility updates are released for most of the apps, themes, and tweaks I use. BiteSMS says that it is iOS 5 ready but when it's installed (yes I have boot tethered after install) it just crashes the second you try to launch. In the themes some icons will not be changed (such as the phone) because the file names are now different (EXAMPLE: icon-BB@2x~iphone.png instead of [email protected], etc...). It's not hard to go into the theme via iFile/SSH and change them if you know what you are doing, such as I have, but of course apps like news stand, videos, and the new iPod app which is now called music. Again you can go into those apps and delete the current icon file and copy/paste the icon you want and change it's name to whatever the stock icons was (I would encourage to create a new directory and save the stock icons there so you can always revert back or keep them saved on your pc). Of course there is the issue that Winterboard will not work but you can install winterfix from cydia to cure some of it's issues. And the major thing to do is after jbing immediately boot tether your phone because cydia will be a blank white icon and will not launch. Once you do that the first thing I would do is install SBSettings because there is an issue where your apps will launch at a 1/4 screen (in the top left corner) and renders them useless. If that happens you need to open SBSettings, put the phone in safe mode and then respring back out of safe mode and the problem is cured until the next time it decides to do so. If you do not have SBSettings (or UISettings) installed and able to do what I just wrote then you will have to restore (and rejb if wanted again) in order to eliminate that, so it's best to just install SBSettings. I have heard of many issues such as the ringer is muted and there's no way to fix it that I know of yet unless you restore and try again. Then there's all these apps such as infindock, spring jumps. Widgets, etc.. that cause the phone to constantly be in safe mode. I did see that Saurik released updates for mobile substrate and some icon support files so perhaps that's been fixed, idk I haven't tried on her phone yet.

PM me if you want to know how to change those icons and folde/multitasking BG's and if I get enough inquiries I'll Creasy a new topic and post the HOW TO.

PS. in my opinion I'd just waste for a untethered JB and maybe by then developers will release updates and fixes for iOS 5.

Does anyone know this works for the 4S? I understand that there's not many people who have one right now but I was just wondering if anyone could confirm that the 4S is actually jailbreakable, or if it's in the same boat as the iPad 2.

Correct it is in the same boat as the iPad 2 because they both have the A5 chip.

need help with the cydia app its white and not running and i dont know what to do on my 4 gen ipod ios5 software

I currently have an iPhone 4 CDMA running on IOS 4.2.6 that is jailbroken with greenpois0n. I am going to wait until there is a untethered jailbreak for the IOS 5 before I jailbreak my iPhone. However, I do not care about preserving my baseband and unlocking my phone. I just only want to jailbreak my iPhone. Is it ok to restore via iTunes to IOS 5 now and then jailbreak my iPhone when the untethered jailbreak comes out for IOS 5 or should I wait and install a custom IPSW via whatever jailbreaking tool come out for untethered IOS 5? In other words, if I restore via iTunes would I still be able to jailbreak later? Thanks

run the jb again, and if that doesn't work, go to 'extras' and click 'just boot' and follow the directions ... it will show up as a regular cydia icon.

keep in mind, you will need to do the 'just boot' each and every time you reboot the device (say for instance, after you go into cydia the first time and install sbsettings).

For all jailbreaks I had that. If you haven't tried just rebooting tethered, do that. That always does it for me

Correct, if you don't want to preserve baseband then you can restore in iTunes and just wait for the untethered jailbreak. Custom IPSW
Is only to preserve baseband and manually add a couple of other things. So your good to go, hope this helps.

Do not follow the timer on the redsnow app screen. Turn off the phone while plug in to the computer. Hold the button for 3 secs (you will see the apple logo pop up). While holding the power press in the home button. When the apple logo goes away let go of the power button but keep pressing the home button in. The redsnow app should kick in and jailbreak. PHEW !!!
