  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 Released - Mac Only For Now

Just a few minutes ago, the redsn0w testers (@redsn0w_testers) Twitter account tweeted out that the iPhone Dev-Team released an update for redsn0w (bringing it to redsn0w 0.9.9b5). The primary goal behind this release was to update redsn0w with the new public URLS for IPSW files. Basically, this allows first-time iOS 5 jailbreakers to not have to supply an IPSW file to jailbreak on iOS 5.

On the iPhone Dev-Team Blog, there was also mention that a little bit of functionality from PwnageTool was added to this release. In the Extras section in redsn0w, you can choose an option called "Custom IPSW" which will build an IPSW file without the baseband for 4.3.3 or iOS 5 GM (for iPhone 3GS and 4 only at this point). The team plans on updating PwnageTool for iOS 5 when an untethered jailbreak comes out.

Here is the full update on what is new and important with redsn0w 0.9.9b5 (READ CAREFULLY. THE WARNINGS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT):

    Quote Originally Posted by iPhone Dev-Team Blog;
Update #13: With today’s official iOS5 release, redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b5 to include the public URLs for the IPSW files. This way, first-time iOS5 jailbreakers don’t need to supply the IPSW file manually. It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S.

Because the jailbreak is currently only tethered for most devices, we’re not going to release a new PwnageTool yet. Instead, we’ve decided to build some of PwnageTool’s functionality into redsn0w (since you need redsn0w to “Just boot tethered” on every power cycle anyway). The new “Custom IPSW” button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now). Remember not to accidentally restore to the stock IPSW after you create the custom one! The custom one begins with NO_BB_ (for “no baseband”).

You must enter “Pwned DFU” mode before trying to use the NO_BB_ IPSW with iTunes (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5).

Version 0.9.9b5 is currently only available for Mac, until we can do more testing on the Windows version of “Custom IPSW”.

We’re currently working on a normal compatibility update for current ultrasn0w unlockers. After that we’ll try to fix the iBooks issue on jailbroken iOS5.
As mentioned in the title as well as the body of Update #13, this version of redsn0w is for Mac users only until more testing on Windows is done.

Download the new redsn0w 0.9.9b5 beta for Mac right here:

    redsn0w 0.9.9b5 for Mac

    Reminders:

    • Redsn0w is still a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS old bootrom users. Otherwise, there is no untethered jailbreak at this time.
    • You cannot jailbreak your iPad 2 on iOS 5 at this time

Im tethered jailbreak using redsnow. Have a few issues (none important ones). My reminders icon changed to the calender icon w/o the date. Also I can not get any notifications to show up on my lockscreen Any ideas why? Under notifications I have it ticked to include on lockscreen.

I've been using 4.3.5 tethered jb, and have just upgraded to 5.0. I used a Mac to jb with redsnow, but regularly use windows. I'd like to know if it's fine to use redsnow 0.9.9b3a to boot up tethered? or strictly stick to the version the I jb'd with

If u have beta3 don't delete it as the new one lags on the "just boot" screen and messes u up every time

      1. Open redsn0w.app, click "Jailbreak" (or Extra's" then click "Just Boot" once jailbroken for a reboot)
      2. Hold both the power and home button down for 10 seconds (does not matter if the phone is on or off)
      3. After 10 seconds release the POWER BUTTON ONLY, your phone will kick into DFU mode and redsn0w will see this and do its stuff, once you see redsn0w installing you can release the home button.

Yeah the timing is too long. It countdowns however the 3 second first step is more like 7 seconds, and the 10 second second step is more like 17 seconds (which is why it goes into recovery) you just have to countdown in your head and ignore the app's countdown.

I'm on iOS 5 and JB with redsn0w and after my phone froze once when I installed sbsettings I'm currently having 0 issues with my phone. I haven't added many tweaks however (mainly due to needing sleep ha). Hope everyone has it figured out

This is a hugely stupid question, however what's the difference between tethered versus untethered?
Is it just the fact one you do not need a cable?

Also on a side note does anyone know if PDANet will work with iOS 5?
I doubt they have updated it so just curious.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't previous versions of redsn0w allow you to reapply an updated jailbreak without the need to restore first. Eg. going from tethered to untethered? I'm 99% sure you can, so may as well play with the JB now, then reapply untethered upon release.

As it's been said a tethered jailbreak you will need to connect to your computer every time you reboot your phone. With untethered you JB then you're good to go. Basically with a tethered JB if you're away from home and your phone reboots you're screwed.

I've used another tethered redsn0w jb for 4.2.1 then when the untethered released I rejailbroke without restoring with no problems. Now if that's how I was supposed to do it, I'm not sure, but I had no problems.

For those of you who have upgraded and JB I found this link helpful:

FYI..... if anyone is having the same problem as me with Cydia, I reinstalled iOS 5.0 thru itunes again (as I couldn't stop Cydia crashing, I could install some tweaks but could not add any sources or search for tweaks inside Cydia)

When I had installed iOS 5.0 the second time I still had the same problem with cydia, using redsn0w_mac_0.9.9b5

I am going to hang back and wait coz its got me stumped unless anyone has any idea's?

I can't offer any insight I'm afraid Mack, but count me as someone who's experiencing the exact same problem. Jailbreak goes perfectly, but mail and safari crash (well, safari crashes while opens but doesn't load anything).

I'm getting an "unknown error occurred (11)" in iTunes. I deleted 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com from the hosts file thinking that is what the Dev-Team meant when saying (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5). Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions on how to get past this?

If you need unlock, no it's not safe yet. You must wait.
Untethered if your 3GS has the old bootrom otherwise tethered for now. Wait for an untether.

If you don't know which bootrom you have, try this:

      Different problem actually.
What's happening is that you're using a tethered JB, but not tethering.

To fix, shutdown the phone, go into DFU mode and use Redsn0w's "Extras-> Just Boot" option.

You'll have to do this every time you reboot or reset the phone, until a new untethered Jailbreak comes out. This is why "tethering sucks". ;(

I've seen the issue with Cydia not seeing any sources or allowing you to add any after a fresh jailbreak.
Usually, just letting Cydia sit there for a few minutes, and then closing and restarting Cydia helps.

The issue with installing a few tweaks is that many/most tweaks aren't fully compatible with 5.0 yet.
And the default Winterboard and SBSettings definitely aren't compatible. Probably you shouldn't install ANY tweaks until Cydia is behaving stably and you have added the "BigBoss Beta" repository and the new Winterboard/SBSetting/etc from there.

I heard there were problems with safari jailbroken on iOS 5, but a 'just boot tethered' option fixed it. Not sure what's happening in your case. What was the last tweak you installed?
I just jailbreak, boot tethered and there is the problem. Before I install something else.
