  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 Released - Mac Only For Now

Just a few minutes ago, the redsn0w testers (@redsn0w_testers) Twitter account tweeted out that the iPhone Dev-Team released an update for redsn0w (bringing it to redsn0w 0.9.9b5). The primary goal behind this release was to update redsn0w with the new public URLS for IPSW files. Basically, this allows first-time iOS 5 jailbreakers to not have to supply an IPSW file to jailbreak on iOS 5.

On the iPhone Dev-Team Blog, there was also mention that a little bit of functionality from PwnageTool was added to this release. In the Extras section in redsn0w, you can choose an option called "Custom IPSW" which will build an IPSW file without the baseband for 4.3.3 or iOS 5 GM (for iPhone 3GS and 4 only at this point). The team plans on updating PwnageTool for iOS 5 when an untethered jailbreak comes out.

Here is the full update on what is new and important with redsn0w 0.9.9b5 (READ CAREFULLY. THE WARNINGS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT):

    Quote Originally Posted by iPhone Dev-Team Blog;
Update #13: With today’s official iOS5 release, redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b5 to include the public URLs for the IPSW files. This way, first-time iOS5 jailbreakers don’t need to supply the IPSW file manually. It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S.

Because the jailbreak is currently only tethered for most devices, we’re not going to release a new PwnageTool yet. Instead, we’ve decided to build some of PwnageTool’s functionality into redsn0w (since you need redsn0w to “Just boot tethered” on every power cycle anyway). The new “Custom IPSW” button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now). Remember not to accidentally restore to the stock IPSW after you create the custom one! The custom one begins with NO_BB_ (for “no baseband”).

You must enter “Pwned DFU” mode before trying to use the NO_BB_ IPSW with iTunes (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5).

Version 0.9.9b5 is currently only available for Mac, until we can do more testing on the Windows version of “Custom IPSW”.

We’re currently working on a normal compatibility update for current ultrasn0w unlockers. After that we’ll try to fix the iBooks issue on jailbroken iOS5.
As mentioned in the title as well as the body of Update #13, this version of redsn0w is for Mac users only until more testing on Windows is done.

Download the new redsn0w 0.9.9b5 beta for Mac right here:

    redsn0w 0.9.9b5 for Mac

    Reminders:
    • Redsn0w is still a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS old bootrom users. Otherwise, there is no untethered jailbreak at this time.
    • You cannot jailbreak your iPad 2 on iOS 5 at this time

Usually, just letting Cydia sit there for a few minutes, and then closing and restarting Cydia helps.

The issue with installing a few tweaks is that many/most tweaks aren't fully compatible with 5.0 yet.
And the default Winterboard and SBSettings definitely aren't compatible. Probably you shouldn't install ANY tweaks until Cydia is behaving stably and you have added the "BigBoss Beta" repository and the new Winterboard/SBSetting/etc from there.
SBSettings is working with iOS 5 I have it installed. WB still isn't. I posted, a few post ago, a link to tweaks compatible with iOS 5

Wow, that sucks... Not sure what the problem is. My only guess is that safari is unstable jailbroken; So I've heard
Also did you restore from a jailbroken backup? That might be the culprit.

I've had problems with a jailbroken backup without any of the above 'backup apps mentioned. It's just buggy to the point I need to restore and setup as new. Especially when you make a jump to a new OS. In my case I made the jump from 3.1.3 to 4.1. So I wouldn't say 'false breh

Can we build a custom iPSW that "updates" only and does not jailbreak? This is in order to preserve baseband while maintaining all data. This way I can make an iOS5 backup and then restore to a fresh iOS5 install afterward. Is this possible?tim

You should never use a Cydia package back-up app when making a major firmware upgrade (4.X.X to 5.X.X) because there is no way to know if the old packages are compatible with the new firmware. This can cause safe mode in most instances and the SWOD in other cases. You never know which app causes the mobile substrate error either so it's a huge waste of time. Re-download all your apps one by one and then make a new back-up.

No unlock available for that baseband (that I'm aware of).
You can Jailbreak but it will be "tethered" for now, which sucks,
so you may want to wait for an untethered JB (due out soon).

You might be able to use the iPad's baseband to do a carrier unlock,
but that's tricky and has a possibility of messing up your phone (particularly, you may lose the GPS).

      Either way, best to wait.

Maybe some one here can help me. I'm on iOS 5 with a Verizon iPhone 4 and I've tried 4 different times to jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.9.9b4. Everything works fine. I can get Cydia running and everything, but as soon as I download and package that requires mobilesubstrate, my phone goes into safe mode and I can't get it out. I've gone through and tried deleting the last package that I downloaded before my springboard crashed and I've even tried deleting mobilesubstrate, but nothing seems to work. I always end up having to just restore the phone and jailbreak it again. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I've never had it happen before.

I don't really know man. You need to give a little more information. What exactly is it or is it not doing?

The countdown timers are a little off. It makes you hold the second step a little to long. Practice putting it into DFU mode and it will automatically advance to the next screen without pushing Next.

Even though its not a 1 click jailbreak, it is still very easy, as long as you read everything that pop ups. Read every instruction line for line.
