  • Jailbreak iOS 5 Public Release with Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze

With the public version of iOS 5 out in the wild, the jailbreak community is wondering whether this new build can be jailbroken. According to a recent tweet by iH8sn0w (@iH8sn0w), tethered jailbreaking the new version is possible with either redsn0w 0.9.9b4 or sn0wbreeze v2.8 beta 8.

From what he mentioned, the public release of iOS 5 has the same IPSW file and build number that was seeded to developers previously. This is what makes it possible to jailbreak the newest version with the current tools.

Note that redsn0w is available on both OS X and Windows while sn0wbreeze is Windows only. In order to preserve baseband, you must use sn0wbreeze as redsn0w does not have that capability.

Here are the download links below:

    redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for Mac
    redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for Windows
    sn0wbreeze v2.8 beta 8 (Windows only)

    Reminders:
    • There is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 that is available yet
    • It is not possible to jailbreak the iPad 2 on iOS 5 at this time

For those of you that may use ultrasn0w or a Gevey Sim, please heed this information from MuscleNerd (@MuscleNerd) which was posted on Twitter earlier:

Now that iOS5 is out, JBers with GSM or CDMA iPad2 baseband should get back down to 4.3.3 before the signing windows shut.

(Actually that applies more to i4 unlockers who rely on Gevey...get back down to BB where Gevey works before you no longer can)
Update: MuscleNerd also confirmed that the current redsn0w beta will jailbreak the public iOS 5 firmware.

yeah im on ios 5 but im not too worry about winterboard cuz my main themes are on dreamboard but theres a lot of things that make the phone go into safe mode like sms+ or sometimes safari wont open and i have to re-jailbreak in order to make it work, i mean ios 5 is awesome but i think developers needs to check into compatibility i think im going back to 4.3.3 until theres a solution/untethered for ios 5

just found out i cant downgrade to 4.3.3 once you are on official ios5 cuz the new way apple verify the shsh or blobs, thats's great http://modmyi.com/images/smilies/mad...milies/mad.gif

You can downgrade but its a lot of messing around.Try going back to something like 3.2.2 first then upgrade to 4.3.3 as thats how I had to do it.

Not for me.. untethered only or no jailbreak.

No Doubt, Untethered is the only way to go! Shouldn't be too long, I HOPE...

Did the tethered JB for my iPhone 4 GSM and it worked perfectly. First time doing it. Not hard at all.

      Not sure.
It affects a LOT of people. Possibly everyone who's jailbroken since 4.3. (I'm not positive on that).
Suggested workarounds are to try using an older version of iBooks, or mangle plists somewhere,
but I don't know the details or if anyone can get it to reliably work.

There's a "ibooksfix" on Cydia that might help you, but probably won't.
It handles a different problem (where iBooks opens and runs but won't access any encrypted/DRM content).

There should be a thread for it somewhere around here.

Edit: not everyone who's jailbroken since 4.3, as Faerie reports.

thanks for this. I'll give it a go but I heard that fix doesn't work in ios5.

iBooks was working fine in 4.3.3 so cant see why it would just stop working in 5.0.
I did restore from a backup this time which is something I didn't do in the past. I usually did a backup via AppBackup and did a fresh restore every time.
Maybe its the backup/restore thats killing iBooks not the jailbreak?

Using AppBackup for 4.x -> 5.x seems to be broken for just about everyone.

(not everyone seems to report the 'iBooks problem' in 4.x. Information about it is sketchy. I guess, some 4.3.x people are OK after all tho )

      I tried a few things.
I synced 1 PDF and it still crashes.
I synced 1 book that I created so I know its doesn't have DRM and it still crashes.
I sync 0 books and it loads up fine.

Baseband preservation: this depends on how you jailbreak your phone. Pwnage Tool (Mac) & Sn0wbreeze (PC) create custom firmware/IPSW to preserve the baseband for an unlock.

Tethered and Untethered jailbreak doesn't affect your baseband.

No jailbreak issues on iOS 5 that I've seen except for incompatible tweaks.

redsn0w which is for Mac and PC will start to include baseband preservation (Pwnage Tool) in its program. It's not available yet but @Musclenerd expects it to be done very soon!
Will i loose my data like apps, contacts, songs if i do a tethered jailbreak on ios5 and my phone gets switched off by some reason ??????

So can I still downgrade from 4.3.5 to 4.3.3 for ip4? Is apple letting u downgrade back to 4.3.3? I don't have SHSH blobs for 4.3.3.

No, you can't. Without 4.3.3 SHSH there is no way to go back to it.

I JB my iPhone 4 GSM with the redsn0w and it worked perfect but there are SO MANY compatibility issues. Of course the themes you install do not work 100% because of the new file names that apple has in the iOS 5. For example: the phone icon doesn't change so you have to go into iFile and go to the theme you want and change the icon name from [email protected] to icon@2x~iphone.png or icon-BB@2x~iphone.png, etc... Apps like BiteSMS do NOT work even though they claim it does. It just opens and crashes and in order to use Winterboard you have to install winterfix. You also get the 1/4 size screen, where the app you launched only shows in the top left corner of the screen so in order to fix it (make sure SBSettings in the first thing you install after JBing) you have to go into SBSettings, put it in safe mode, then respring out of safe mode otherwise (without SBSettings or UISettings) you will have to restore and reJB. I went back to 4.3.3 because there are just way to many compatibility issues and the ONLY thing that is going to work properly (to all you pirates, btw I hate you lol) is **********. So if you're not a pirate then I'd just wait till developers update their apps, etc... The ONLY reason somebody would JB on 5.0 right now is to have free apps, so in my opinion it's NOT worth at this point. Although, it sucks because I really like iOS 5 and the new features. I can't wait to see themes like VIP, Prestige, Revi DX or KRS update because those themes will be extremely great with 5. Well there's my opinion.....

P.S. Most people don't know this but in order for Cydia to work after the JB you must tether reboot the phone, then cydia will actually open and show the icon (if you are having the issue where cydia will not open and it's just a blank white icon).

I'm betting with all the problems I've been having there will be a 5.01 release soon.
Instead of just getting a notification I now get apps opening. The only way I found to get around this is to turn off all notifications to "View in Lock Screen" but when you unlock your device you get heaps of notifications all at once.

There is no way to stop an alert (clock alarm) from the lock screen. There is only snooze unless you unlock the device (swipe to unlock)

iBooks doesn't work after jailbreaking or restoring. I'm not sure which it is but iBooks no longer works. Use Kobo instead as its better anyway.

You can backup to the iCloud but there is no way to restore unless you restore your iDevice. iTunes lets you restore anytime you want.

iCloud has totally stuffed my address book. There are now double and triple contacts even when I choose "From my PC" but the PC doesn't have double or triple adresses.

There are more but thats all I can think of atm. With all the problems I've been having I'm not suprised so many people are downgrading back to 4.3.3 as its so much more stable and it works a lot better.
I will be restoring once more and if iBooks and a few other problems arn't fixed it's back to 4.3.3 for me until 5.01 is released.

Your iBooks will NOT work with a JB. on 4.x they came out with the iBook Fix that you install out of cydia. I'm not sure if it'll work on 5.0 but you can try. After I installed it on 4.2.1 and then 4.3.3 it worked perfect. You should try it on 5.0 and start a new thread and repost here if the "iBooks Fix" install works on 5.0
