  • Jailbreak iOS 5 Public Release with Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze

With the public version of iOS 5 out in the wild, the jailbreak community is wondering whether this new build can be jailbroken. According to a recent tweet by iH8sn0w (@iH8sn0w), tethered jailbreaking the new version is possible with either redsn0w 0.9.9b4 or sn0wbreeze v2.8 beta 8.

From what he mentioned, the public release of iOS 5 has the same IPSW file and build number that was seeded to developers previously. This is what makes it possible to jailbreak the newest version with the current tools.

Note that redsn0w is available on both OS X and Windows while sn0wbreeze is Windows only. In order to preserve baseband, you must use sn0wbreeze as redsn0w does not have that capability.

Here are the download links below:

    redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for Mac
    redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for Windows
    sn0wbreeze v2.8 beta 8 (Windows only)

    Reminders:

    • There is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 that is available yet
    • It is not possible to jailbreak the iPad 2 on iOS 5 at this time

For those of you that may use ultrasn0w or a Gevey Sim, please heed this information from MuscleNerd (@MuscleNerd) which was posted on Twitter earlier:

Now that iOS5 is out, JBers with GSM or CDMA iPad2 baseband should get back down to 4.3.3 before the signing windows shut.

(Actually that applies more to i4 unlockers who rely on Gevey...get back down to BB where Gevey works before you no longer can)
Update: MuscleNerd also confirmed that the current redsn0w beta will jailbreak the public iOS 5 firmware.

are there any known issues with the tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 on the iPhone 4?

I think this was possible with snowbreeze on iOS GM as I remember there was even a separate update to snowbreeze so that it could make iOS 5 beta/GM untethered on the old bootrom 3GS?
Yes GM and Public are the same file, and untethered does work on 3GS Old Bootrom GM via Snowbreeze 2.8b8. Took a couple of builds and restores to get it to work for me but well worth doing.

You will be able to use the untethered jailbreak WITHOUT a restore.

      For the noobs:
Tethered Jailbreak - requires a computer to revive your phone if it reboots/battery dies. You will lose all functionality of the phone.

Untethered Jailbreak - Your phone will reboot and be Jailbroken as normal.

Baseband preservation: this depends on how you jailbreak your phone. Pwnage Tool (Mac) & Sn0wbreeze (PC) create custom firmware/IPSW to preserve the baseband for an unlock.

Tethered and Untethered jailbreak doesn't affect your baseband.

No jailbreak issues on iOS 5 that I've seen except for incompatible tweaks.

redsn0w which is for Mac and PC will start to include baseband preservation (Pwnage Tool) in its program. It's not available yet but @Musclenerd expects it to be done very soon!

This is exactly why I wait for the Dev Team to get their tools out properly because in the past I've had nothing but problems & errors with sn0wbreeze. I have a Snow Leopard & Lion Virtual on my Win 7 machine just to ensure I can always create a custom firmware (& to play around with the OS)

I'm on 4.3.1 right now, and I would LOVE to upgrade to 5.0 (who wouldn't, amirite?). Let's say I forgo the JB process and install a clean iOS 5 on my i4 (preserving baseband isn't an issue for me; I'm on AT&T). Would I be able to jailbreak 5.0 when they release an untethered JB down the road (I'm assuming yes, what with all the DFU/restore jazz), or should I stick with my current firmware until an untethered solution is released?

Can anyone elaborate on this? I have an i4 4.3.3 with BB 03.10.01 and use Gevey Ultra. I don't understand the "get back down to BB where Gevey works before you no longer can" part as, to my knowledge, we can't downgrade basebands (or is that only for people with the iPad baseband?).

iPhone 4 can downgrade baseband but only when Apple is still signing a firmware. So if someone were to accidentally update their iPhone 4 to 5.0 and update the baseband right now they could downgrade back to 4.3.5 and downgrade their baseband back to 4.10.01 (which works with gevey). Once Apple stops signing 4.3.5 iPhone 4 owners will not be able to downgrade their baseband anymore.

I'm not sure what Musclenerd meant either BUT as long as you use Pwnage or Sn0wbreeze, you can keep ur baseband.

      Thanx Simon, didn't know that!

There is no untethered jailbreak for 4.3.5 for iPhone 4.

I'm considering going tethered for now... but is there some sort of easy workaround that does not always need a computer to restore? Such as an online safari based JB, that you can quickly do over the itouch itself?

      Normally,
If it reboots when you are away from your computer, the phone will probably hang and become unusable until you get back to your computer.
If it reboots while you're at your computer, you re-run the JB tool to get it back to normal (usable phone, usable jailbreak).
      _
      Occasionally,
if you reboot away from your computer, the phone may recover in a usable, operational mode, but without any JB software or tools available. It's called a semi-tethered boot, and it works for some people sometimes; but not reliably in any case.

okay, so if i do a tethered jailbreak and idk lets say my phone dies out in public... will it reboot like factory or will it not boot at all? Becuase if it will boot up unjailbroken im all good and can reboot it when i get home, but if it wont boot at all Im not so sure i can deal with that...
