  • Apple's iCloud Service Released - MobileMe Migration Ready

Apple’s iCloud recently just went live for everyone! All you need to do is to enter your current login details and you will be prompted to upgrade the MobileMe account to iCloud (if you had one). The site for iCloud (http://iCloud.com) just went live as well as it no longer says beta and has a new login screen.

The Cupertino giant has also released the MobileMe to iCloud migration page (http://MobileMe.com/move), which will allow users MobileMe users to migrate data from their MobileMe account to iCloud. The migration process will allow users to move content such as Mail, Contacts, and Calendar data to their iCloud account.

If you previously used other MobileMe services such as iWeb, iDisk, and Photo Gallery it is important to note that these services will not be migrated, instead they will be discontinued after June 30, 2012. You will be unable to sync the Mac Dashboard widget, Dock items, keychains, signatures, mail account rules, mail smart boxes, and mail preferences. Just keep all this in mind so you can set everything up and backup/migrate anything that won’t be automatically transferred over to your iCloud account.

Once you migrate to iCloud, MobileMe users get 25GB of storage (the 20GB of storage that came with the yearly plan for MobileMe subscribers) along with 5GB of storage for free (which is offered to all iCloud users). For those of you who previously purchased MobileMe, the migration process won’t incur any extra cost until June 30, 2012. For those of you who are creating your iCloud account and did not have MobileMe, you will be entitled to 5 GB of free after creating an account.

If you come to the conclusion that your 5GB (or 25GB for MobileMe subscribers) isn't enough storage space, you can purchase additional storage space for an annual fee. According to Apple, three storage plans are available: 10GB will cost $20 per year; 20GB will cost $40 per year; and 50GB will cost $100 per year.

Apple already released iTunes 10.5 and iOS 5 is expected to be released later in the day along with Mac OS X 10.7.2 and iWork for iOS. Speculation says that iOS 5 will possibly drop at 10:00AM Pacific (1:00PM Eastern) but the quickest way to find out will be to stay tuned here at MMi.

Itunes Match = allows you to put your audio music in a cloud (not iCloud) by scanning it with itunes matching known music and uploading unknown matched tracks, allowing you access to all tracks from multiple devices: ipod Touch, iPhone, mac, pc; has no specific relation to iCloud

iCloud = allows you to put mail, contacts, calendar, documents in the the cloud (specifically iCloud)

Ok cool thx for the clarification. I kinda had that idea that the icloud was more for storing emails, contacts, etc. I have no use for iCloud but im all in on itunes match : )

I just finished it up and it gave me no problems what so ever. I'm not a developer either... luck of the draw I guess.

I had no migration screen, just asked for my Apple ID & password, then took me to Find My Phone iCloud screen. When I click on the cloud in the top left corner I see all the icons (mail, contacts & such..) no migration!.

Here is the way I did it and it worked.
Sign into MobileMe, open a new page and go to iCloud, sign in. Click migrate/Get Started. I had to be signed into both and have both open.
