  • i0n1c Confirms iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak is On The Way

Now that the public release of iOS 5 is just around the corner, as well as the iPhone 4S launch, the jailbreak community is begging the question; when will the next untethered jailbreak come out? Ever since the beginning of the iOS 5 beta cycle, the redsn0w 0.9.x beta has been able to allow users to jailbreak iOS 5, however it has only been tethered. For the hardcore users who will jailbreak no matter what, this may not be an issue. But for the majority of us, we need an untethered jailbreak to move forward with jailbreaking our device(s). Although there may have seemed to be no progress in formulating an untethered for iOS 5, this is not the case.

About ten hours ago, Stefan Esser (i0n1c), known for his infamous exploits that got us untethered jailbreaks on 4.3.x, tweeted out that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is "covered" already. And to conclude his tweet, he left us with "Guess who?" The answer is much more obvious than it may seem to be.

On numerous occasions, members of the Chronic Dev Team have dropped us little hints that progress is moving ever forward in regards to an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. Chronic Dev members posixninja (@p0sixninja) and OPK (@iOPK) at mentioned at MyGreatFest, the world's first jailbreak convention, that the Chronic Dev Team has found at least five userland exploits that could be potentially used for iOS 5. Finding these "loop holes" is exciting within itself however the process is just at the beginning.

Stefan's tweet "out to the world" is just a reiteration of what has been happening. If you were in doubt that something is coming or being worked on, be reassured. Stefan made it clear that he doesn't have an ETA on the release of this jailbreak tool, and I can guarantee you that the Chronic Dev Team doesn't either. Continue to be patient, supportive, and be extremely excited that it is on the way!

    Stay tuned.

Quite frankly, iOS 5 is a beautiful update. The only things I really miss from my jailbreak are: Gridlock, FolderEnhancer, SBSettings, BiteSMS and MyStrings...and of course Cydia itself because I love searching for new and useful tweaks. Other than that iOS 5 is bery good, and surprisingly customizable being an Apple OS (custom tones for Mail, Messages and alterts, etc; bye ToneFXs!) and custom vibration patterns (bye Vibrafications!). Apple did what they always do in a new iOS version, they learn from the jailbreak community and then "innovate" with stuff that can already be done with a jailbreak and a little bit of imagination. Folders, Wi-Fi sync and Reminders, anyome?...

Hoping I'll be able to put iOS 5 on my 3GS while still keeping my old 5.13.04 baseband. Although I wish there were a way to do it without jailbreaking as my JB 4.3.3 runs like poo most of the time. Wife's 3GS on 4.3.4 has no problems and it's not JB.

Hopefully apple hasn't found it so they won't cover it up. Also I hope it doesn't take as long as a 4.0 untethered (almost 2 months)

Yea I think I can be patient on this one as I have iOS 5 GM on my i4 and am coping just fine as a lot of the good cydia tweaks have been added (copied) to iOS 5 anyway.

Eh, not so much. I held off trying any of the BETA's but loaded up the GM version last week and while I think the OS is good it still lacks alot for me. The notifications have improved but still could use some work, newsstand, and iMessage is pointless, the updates to Safari I have yet to see any benefits, the same goes for the updates to Mail. I did the tethered jailbreak to my phone last week but went back since none of the apps were working which was to be expected but I had to check just in case. Can't wait for an untheathed jailbreak.
