  • redsn0w 0.9.6beta5 Out - Tethered Jailbreak for 4.2.1 on Older Devices
redsn0w 0.9.6beta4 was just recently announced, and beta5 is now out giving both Windows and OSX users the ability to flash the iPad 06.15 baseband on iPhone3G or iPhone3GS. (why?).

This release jailbreaks iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. It also assists 3G and 3G[S] users with baseband 05.14 or 05.15 who have been stuck without an unlock upgrade their baseband to 06.15 in order to use the new ultrasn0w which was just released. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU NEED TO. More on that here.

A much upgraded Cydia is also included in this release, which we'll be writing a full story on in the morning - a ton of great improvements thanks to saurik and chpwn.

Is the title of this article incorrect? Shouldn't it be "Tethered Jaibreak for 4.2.1 on NEWER Devices"?

OK... I'm no longer convinced that re-jailbreaking a device already jailbroken with b4 with b5 produces the new Cydia.

I can't really tell a difference. What should I be seeing that's different? The text in landscape mode on the iPad is still all over the place so I'm thinking I have the same Cydia as in b4.

FWIW, there should be an easy way to update Cydia. The whole idea that there's not is ridiculous. All the tech put into this crap and they can't even update the main repository? I find that incrediably hard to swallow.

If that comment was directed at me and my post above, let me assure you that before Cydia was a for profit venture, I would have never uttered a word of negativity against it. It's not not-for-profit anymore. My bet would be that they are making tons of money with it. That's fine. More power to them. Wish I had thought of it and done it myself. That doesn't proclude the fact that the interface is antiquated and barely even maintained. Of whom much is given, much is expected, as the old saying goes.

You guys can all stand around and be a buncha cheer-boys if you want to. I don't roll that way. I make a living in this industry and it is what it is, thank you.

I've never uttered a word against JB problems. Why? At least as of today, the JBs remain free and in the public domain. I take what I get and takes my chances and I am grateful for all of it.

Rock Your Phone came out as a for profit venture out of the 'chute and many around here bad-mouthed them and I suspect that it was mostly because of the fact that they were "for profit" if the real truth were known.

It wasn't sixty days before Cydia began selling software and nobody basically said a word. A year later, Cydia buys up/eats its only competition. Fine. Then make your App Store as functional and as good as Rock and as easy to update. Maintain the damn thing. That's all I ask.

Now... if you were talking to someone earlier in the thread, please accept my sincerest apologies. If you were talking to me, go pound sand. You don't get it. BTW, it's "ungrateful", moron.

I have a 3g and was stuck with base-band 05.14. Upgraded with the new Pwnage tool. Worked great except that I could not upgrade to firmware 4.2. My understanding was that the latest Pwnage tool would have the 4.2.1 bundle in it, but it does not accept the firmware version 4.2.1.

It does have a 4.2.1 bundle in it. It doesn't (by default) have a 3GS 4.2.1 bundle in it though.

      Hello.
I have an Ipod 2g (non MC) model with jb ios4.0 with cydia.
      I download firmware "iPod2,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore" and redsn0w_win_0.9.6b5.

After whole succesful installation process my ipod shows firmware 4.1 installed.

I try few times but some results.

Why my ipod doesn`t show 4.2.1?

      Sorry for my english.

      Pls. help!

LE: I figured out what`s wrong. Need to install last firmware from itunes and then jb with redsn0w.

I downloaded the 4.2.1 firmware 4 times from different sources, and when I tried the last one the Pwnage Toll finally recognized the firmware, so I pwned my 3g again and it worked like a charm. I am now on 4.2.1 with baseband 06.15 unlocked with no problems.

It doesnt matter if your sim is in or out. To remove jailbreak all you have to do is restore.
