  • Breakdown of iPhone 4S: A Disappointing Analysis?

Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” media event is now over and many are left disappointed. The iPhone 4S was announced along with several iOS device refreshes and many were left unsatisfied. Apple revealed the price points for the new iPhone 4S (with contract) which consist of:

    • $199 – 16 GB
    • $299 – 32 GB
    • $399 – 64 GB

The device will consist of both black and white models and will be available for pre-orders starting October 7th. As mentioned previously the iPhone 4S will have the following specs:

    • Dual Core A5 Processor.
    • Dual Core Graphics.
    • 8 Hour 3G Talk Time Battery.
    • 2x Faster Download Speed.
    • CDMA + GSM Radios.
    • 16, 32, 64GB Models.
    • 8 Megapixel Camera 3264x2448 Resolution, 5 Lens.
    • Backside Illuminated CMOS.
    • 1080p Video Recording.
    • Video Image Stabilization.
    • Temporal Noise Reduction.
    • Siri Voice.

Although the hardware will be an improvement over the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S doesn’t seem to offer anything groundbreaking or exciting as anticipated. The specifications inform us some of what we expected including a faster CPU/GPU, longer lasting battery life, faster download speeds, dual-mode (CDMA + GSM), larger capacity (upto 64GB now), a better camera with camera features, and exclusively the Siri Assistant.

Everyone already knew the new iPhone would have the A5 chip and the improved GPU performance was also expected. Apple spent quite a bit of time showcasing the improved graphics but honestly it seemed much like what the iPad 2 has been able to do since March but just on a smaller screen. The improved battery life is a slight upgrade, which is probably the least of what many people were looking forward to.

The improved camera did seem to appeal to many with the fact that it now offers a quicker load time to the first shot (1.1 seconds), a quicker response shot to shot (0.5 seconds), and a higher quality image. The iPhone 4S will also support 1080P video recording as well, which is also going to appeal to many but all in all, a camera update was one that many expected. It isn’t a good enough reason to justify the purchase of the device.

The Siri Personal Assistant is just about the only thing along with the expected hardware improvements that is exclusive to the iPhone 4S that impressed the public. Siri’s co-founder Norman Winarsky just yesterday mentioned that Siri’s Assistant would be a “world-changing” event and many see it being a huge leap forward. I can definitely see Siri becoming popular amongst many but I don’t know how many would agree that it is “world-changing."

The WOW factor of the new iPhone was relatively low as much of this was expected from before. Many were anticipating some surprise throughout the keynote, but were left with nothing. As mentioned previously, the iPhone 4S essentially is a slightly upgraded (hardware-wise with the exception of Siri) iPhone 4. Even so though, there were many complaints that the iPhone 4S doesn’t have a larger screen (which was amongst the many rumors that were circulating before today’s announcement).

Many are left disappointed as well due to a lack of 4G surprises at today’s Apple media event. The new iPhone is confirmed to not be compatible with either LTE or WiMax 4G wireless networking standards. The new iPhone will work on 3G networks including AT&T’s HSPA+ network, which the carrier has been advertising as “4G.” It won’t be compatible with AT&T’s recently launched LTE network nor Verizon’s already growing LTE network. It also won’t be compatible with Sprint’s nationwide WiMax 4G network, even though Sprint has reportedly made a commitment to sell over 25 million iPhones over the next few years.

Although several Android-based smartphones have been released with support for the 4G networks, Apple has been quite reluctant to add to its popular iPhone. Despite rumors to the contrary, CEO Tim Cook repeatedly said that “LTE would force design compromises we’re not willing to make,” including increased size and decreased battery life.

Some have already decided to jump the bandwagon and purchase an Android phone until the release of a true next-generation iPhone while others are caving in and still planning to purchase an iPhone 4S. With everything revealed, what are your thoughts? Are you going to be purchasing an iPhone 4S? If not, what are your plans?

UPDATE: The folks over at CNET have created a very good comparison chart which can be found below:

UPDATE: Stock traders are also very unhappy as Apple's stock plummets after the iPhone 4S announcement earlier today.

P.S: I hope you didn't have the following response (some people probably did):

      This is hilarious.

I have & kept my 3Gs because I don't need a new phone every single year. I know how to read, I work in tech, but still made the choice not upgrade for 2 reasons: 1. I signed a 2 year contract & 2. I really think designing a phone with glass on the front & back is absolutely idiotic from a functional standpoint.

I'll likely get the iPhone 4S depending on how much I get for my 3Gs when I sell it.

Calling me or anyone else silly because we don't upgrade every year makes you appear childish.

for those who didn't upgrade to i4 great for them. However I can't see wasting an upgrade and shelling out the $ for the 4s if I own the 4. Its already fast enough as I don't play infinity blade. The camera upgrade would be nice but the i4 still takes good pics. Ios5 should be nice. Looking forward to itunes match and all the other new features.Siri doesn't really interest me but I mayjust need to try it. Overall just not a big enough upgrade.

You are silly! Let's just keep it real! You haven't upgraded cause you can't afford to. Nothing wrong with that. Let's just not pretend you didn't by choice. Even still it depends what you can sell your 3GS for. Let's not blame apple for not releasing a I5. That pretty much sums it up buddy!

I find it somewhat depressing at how most of you are switching to Android when this really is a great phone. I mean really. Siri is really great. Just jailbreak your i4 or 3GS and get Siri.

Wow people like to complain...you can't make haters happy. I have amazing ATT service where I live, I can get all the upgrades I want, and I love Apple. Android is awful. My life rocks...I'm getting the 4S

Oh, and that Siri business is useless for me because I live in a Spanish-speaking country, and I'd look stupid talking in English to my phone while everyone looks at me asking: wtf is he doing?...
I'm not posative, but I do believe that the "Personal Assistant"'s voice can be changed to Spanish, or what ever your native language is.......

I would like to comment on most of you that say you are waiting on the "iPhone 5"...... I don't think the next iPhone (Which will be the 6th generation) will be called that. It just might be called the "iPhone 6"

I for one will be upgrading to the 4S...... It wasn't too tough to justify going to the 3GS from the 3G, it will be easier to justify this......

I remember the iPad event where there was very little clapping and everyone called it a giant iPhone (Its more like a giant iPod Touch). I do believe that the iPad is still the leading tablet on the market...... I am holding on to the first gen iPad and it's killing me to wait for the iPad 3.

Tim Cook did not sell the iPhone 4S as well as Steve Jobs would have. That man was a very good salesman....... He will be missed.

mod edit: do not insult other members Why the hell would I need to upgrade to the 4 when I had a 3GS? A 2 year cycle is perfect for me, just because you measure your "ego" by getting a new iPhone every year, I'll just stick to what works for me.

On a side note, I didn't *buy an iPhone 4 by choice. I personally don't care if the phone is called 4S or 5, I just would have liked a bigger screen & for the phone to not have the glass back.

Wow.....obviously a lot of people on here believed that Apple was actually going to release 2 new iPhones at the same time......Whoever thought up this rumor is to blame for so many people being so pissed off!As for the iphone 4s....it does seem like an amazing device, and I do want one. All of the upgrades inside of the phone are what I would have expected from the "iPhone 5". If Apple would have made all of the changes it did, but also changed the design just a bit....seriously JUST A BIT, I think there would be MUCH less complaining. Even if Apple didnt increase the screen size, they could have given it a chrome back, just SOMETHING to make it LOOK DIFFERENT. From the comments made here, it is obvious that most people want their iPhone to look different then the iphone they already own. Why? So they can show their friends! "Look at my new iPhone!! Its so awesome!! Im so awesome because I got the new iPhone!!" I guess you cant really do that with the iPhone 4s.....since it looks the same.... The only thing the iphone 4s does is work WAY better, work WAY faster.......and it appears that isn't very appealing to a lot of people. Kinda sad.

I bought my iPhone 4 2 months ago and was worried it would lose its value when the iPhone "5" is released and boy I was very happy today lol

I like the iPhone 4 very much and wasn't gonna upgrade anyway because I stick with my cell phones for years (my old Nokia 6600 served me for 5 years !!) and with seeing this minor upgrade of the 4S just relieved me

Bottom line is : if you have a 3GS or older and want to upgrade then 4S is very good, but if you have the i4 and it serves you wellm why upgrade ?

We live in a connected lifestyle anymore and if I can not post a picture of myself and my daughter at a football game for my wife to see (or a pic message for that matter) It does me no good at all.
The thunderbolt looked like an option, but battery life was crappy. Now the droid bionic may be an option, but I'm not rushing out anywhere yet.
All my necessary iphone apps are in andriod so it's an easy jump for me. I'll take 2 years on another network untill they get it right!

Is there anyone that actually get 7.2mbps anywhere?

I do in mid Michigan. I can pull a solid 700k download.

Read your original post! You insinuate you were gonna jump to the I5 and replace your aging 3GS and that you are skeptical of the 4S. My point is the difference between a 3GS and a I4 is probably the largest advancement apple has ever made from one device to the next. mod edit: do not insult other membersNow you imply I measure my ego by having a new phone? I simply upgraded because the very reason I just explained.

First off if they increase the size of the screen then it would create fragmentation because not every app is going to be formatted for a different screen size, and Apple doesn't like fragmentation.

Secondly this is the same as the iPhone 3G/3GS, so why is everyone acting like Apple has done something horrible. The Media (as well as blogs) constantly made predictions an rumors and because of it people believed that a new radically designed model was on the way.

Nonetheless there are some major improvements to the iPhone 4S which will still sells millions and most likely next year Apple is gonna change everything again with a new designed iPhone

      1. You already have fragmentation: SD/HD/iPad apps
      2. Apple still has the highest resolution screen. If they would build a 4 inch screen with the same resolution it would still be the screen with the highest resolution, NO app would need any update!

So with one word: Most users want a larger display and a new body, it's possible to build in such a display without making the iPhone significant larger and certainly without any fragmentation.

It's funny that you don't even know the difference between screensize and screen resolution ?
