  • iPhone 4S - Tech Specs and Features

The iPhone 4S was announced just a tad before the keynote on the Japan Apple Store, covered here by Akshay Masand. It will be released on October 14th, shipped with the iOS 5 operating system which will be released on October 12th. It will feature the same look and style of the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4S features many of the expected specifications. They include:

    • Dual Core A5 Processor.
    • Dual Core Graphics.
    • 8 Hour 3G Talk Time Battery.
    • 2x Faster Download Speed.
    • CDMA + GSM Radios.
    • 16, 32, 64GB Models.
    • 8 Megapixel Camera 3264x2448 Resolution, 5 Lens.
    • Backside Illuminated CMOS.
    • 1080p Video Recording.
    • Video Image Stabilization.
    • Temporal Noise Reduction.
    • Siri Voice.

The iPhone 4S is up to 2x faster than before, with dual-core graphics, which are said to be seven times faster than previous iPhone, "With the power of A5, we can bring all sorts of detail to the environment, like fireflies, leaves in the wind, koi in the pond." This zippy new CPU doesn't drain the battery life either. The battery life has been increased to 8 hours of 3G talk-time.

The iPhone 4S still uses 3G, although the data speeds are tantamount to that of current 4G speeds. Theoretical download speeds are now twice, 14.4Mbps versus 7.2 on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S is a dual-radio phone that can operate on both CDMA and GSM networks. The iPhone 4S can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality - something that has never been done for any phone before.

The Camera is no slouch either. It's an 8 Megapixel Still camera which is 1/3 faster than the iPhone 4's camera. The backside illuminated CMOS offers a 73% brighter picture. For video recording, the camera is capable of 1080p video and includes video stabilization as mentioned here in more depth. The camera has a 5 lens system for absolutely wonderful lighting, clarity, and accurate shots.

The iPhone 4S also includes a voice feature called Siri. The feature allows for you to have a 'conversation' with your iPhone by talking to it to get results. You can tell your iPhone 4S to tell you how to get somewhere, or to set an alarm, and there are several more things that you can command your iPhone 4S to do with Siri. It works right out of the box and learns your voice and talking habits to work better for you. It’ll be built-in with support for English, French, and German. It will be beta at the start; by beta they mean they’ll add more languages and services over time.

The iPhone 4S will be available in black and white. 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399.

The iPhone 4S can be pre-ordered on October 7th. Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T will have the iPhone 4S, but T-Mobile will not.

Are you impressed with the new iPhone 4S? Tell us what you expected, or want to see in the next iPhone!

How sad is it that I see this new iPhone & I'm seriously considering hanging on to my iPhone 3Gs for one more year? I really do not like the design of the 4, now 4S. A glass back has to be the most idiotic design choice in the history of design choices for cell phones. I'd be curious as to what others think. Those with the 4 I'd assume will be happy to keep their phone with no rush to upgrade, but are there any other 3Gs users that are in the same boat as me? & what will you do?
I still have my 3GS and was waiting to get the iPhone 5. I too really dislike the iPhone 4 design and was really hoping for a new form factor and bigger screen. I really want an upgrade because my 3GS is so slow I've wanted to throw it sometimes. However, I dont want to waste my upgrade on just a faster iphone 4 with better camera. I guess I'll hold onto my 3GS for now... maybe try and find a used iphone 4 for cheap? who knows... not gonna waste my upgrade tho... Ill be patient for a real iPhone upgrade. Not his "S"*it.

What is everyone's problem? It's an iPhone 4S not an iPhone 5, so what? It has things that they iPhone 4 doesn't that people have been looking forward to. Would it make everyone happy if they changed the name to iPhone 5 instead of iPhone 4S? JEEEZ.

The specs are awesome. 4G is a battery hog, so if they can get 3G to be as fast as 4G then I'm right on board with Apple. NICE JOB!

I thought it would be impossible to fit 64GB's in the current design?

Please tell me... what would you need 25+Mbps for on a mobile device that 10Mbps can't do? Also what would you do after you blow through your 2GB data cap in 11 minutes at that speed?!

Well I would disagree with your definition, but it is understandable that you would be confused as there is quite a bit of of that regarding the generic term "4G" which means virtually nothing.

LTE (Long Term Evolution) is a flavor of "4G". Sprint's WiMax is another. 4G is just a way of defining something after 3G, which also meant a generation of technologies, of which there were a few competing flavors.

I have no problem that it isn't 4G, From Apple's own statements I didn't see this happening.

What Drives me nuts is that they are continuing with this horrible design that has horrible consequences. Consequences so bad that when my friend broke the glass back on his iPhone 4, the Apple store stated that they give 1 FREE complimentary replacement of that glass back. That can't be cheap for Apple, nor is it cheap for consumers who seem to be stuck with a phone that can break both "front to back."

Earlier in this thread I was told the back is easy to change on the 4, maybe that is what I'll do, because I don't think I'll be able to sell my unlockable 3Gs for anything come next year.

I couldn't care less about what others think about the phone I'm carrying. However, my aging eyes would have certainly liked a 4" iPhone screen.

You can say that AGAIN.... Apple, REALLY? All that time and that is it??? I am very disappointed to say the least. Don't get me wrong, the updates are great, but we waited that long and this is all we get? BABY STEPS are not the way to go, apple should be leaping forward, breaking barriers, remaining the leader. Am I alone here or was that a let down?

Wow how uneventful for an Apple event. I switched to Android in July when my upgrade came around(could not wait til the end of the yr for the new iPhone) Loved my 3GS and thought I'd have regrets after the new iPhone released, but now I'm happy I switched. No way could I go back to a 3.5" screen. Apple really dropped the ball on this one.
