  • iPhone 4S - Tech Specs and Features

The iPhone 4S was announced just a tad before the keynote on the Japan Apple Store, covered here by Akshay Masand. It will be released on October 14th, shipped with the iOS 5 operating system which will be released on October 12th. It will feature the same look and style of the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4S features many of the expected specifications. They include:

    • Dual Core A5 Processor.
    • Dual Core Graphics.
    • 8 Hour 3G Talk Time Battery.
    • 2x Faster Download Speed.
    • CDMA + GSM Radios.
    • 16, 32, 64GB Models.
    • 8 Megapixel Camera 3264x2448 Resolution, 5 Lens.
    • Backside Illuminated CMOS.
    • 1080p Video Recording.
    • Video Image Stabilization.
    • Temporal Noise Reduction.
    • Siri Voice.

The iPhone 4S is up to 2x faster than before, with dual-core graphics, which are said to be seven times faster than previous iPhone, "With the power of A5, we can bring all sorts of detail to the environment, like fireflies, leaves in the wind, koi in the pond." This zippy new CPU doesn't drain the battery life either. The battery life has been increased to 8 hours of 3G talk-time.

The iPhone 4S still uses 3G, although the data speeds are tantamount to that of current 4G speeds. Theoretical download speeds are now twice, 14.4Mbps versus 7.2 on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S is a dual-radio phone that can operate on both CDMA and GSM networks. The iPhone 4S can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality - something that has never been done for any phone before.

The Camera is no slouch either. It's an 8 Megapixel Still camera which is 1/3 faster than the iPhone 4's camera. The backside illuminated CMOS offers a 73% brighter picture. For video recording, the camera is capable of 1080p video and includes video stabilization as mentioned here in more depth. The camera has a 5 lens system for absolutely wonderful lighting, clarity, and accurate shots.

The iPhone 4S also includes a voice feature called Siri. The feature allows for you to have a 'conversation' with your iPhone by talking to it to get results. You can tell your iPhone 4S to tell you how to get somewhere, or to set an alarm, and there are several more things that you can command your iPhone 4S to do with Siri. It works right out of the box and learns your voice and talking habits to work better for you. It’ll be built-in with support for English, French, and German. It will be beta at the start; by beta they mean they’ll add more languages and services over time.

The iPhone 4S will be available in black and white. 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399.

The iPhone 4S can be pre-ordered on October 7th. Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T will have the iPhone 4S, but T-Mobile will not.

Are you impressed with the new iPhone 4S? Tell us what you expected, or want to see in the next iPhone!

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but 4G is forth generation cellular data technology, it doesn't mean a specific speed.

LTE is one flavor of 4G data technology, which supports scalable bandwidth for the carriers, which at it's lowest levels is a significant increase in speed over all flavors of 3G technology.

There are several 1st generation LTE phones out there utilizing the LTE 4G networks on AT&T, Verizon, and TMobile. Sprint also has some "4G" capable phones on their WiMax flavor of 4G data service.

We are witnessing only the infancy of these new data technology deployments. However, there are several phones available, with more coming soon, from various vendors, on various networks. Apple's new iPhone isn't one of them.

You can get "Siri" on the AppStore.... Lol. But if you were wondering if a Cydia Developer would integrate it into IOS 4 then let's hope! I'd +1 that idea!

They know folks like you will wait for them. They are counting on Apple Fanboys waiting to get only what they deem appropriate for dibbling out to what they believe are their legions of lemmings.

Although i my self am disappointed, i will be getting this phone. After going from the i4 to the galaxy s2 i just miss the latter too much! It wouldn't have killed apple to at least give us a bigger screen though. Can't see why after the massive delay we only got a faster iPhone 4...

Reading through these comments i have to say many people on this site are to caught up in the physical aspect of the device. People are showing that they just wanted a new iPhone design so they could walk around with it and people would be like WOAH. However, the specs for the 4S are actually pretty impressive no matter how you look at it. Just because it doesn't have the 4G label it still pushes 4G speeds. Hell most of the places in the US are even covered by 4G anyways. Siri is very useful and powerful technology. The phone may look exactly the same but the overall quality is much greater than that of iPhone 4. An incredible camera incredible speed and no matter how you look at it, its better faster (stronger aha). If Apple changes one little part of the outside and called it the 5 everyone knows they would go bananas over it. I will be buying one

to me real question is when will iPhone5 be out. if its next june then if you upgrade now your screwed. I want Siri, but I think I will pass for now. Not enough change IMHO. Bummer, really wanted a larger screen.

I, too, was looking forward to some of the hyped up features of iPhone 5 like the larger screen. But the 4S is not without it's awesomeness. I like the fact that the camera is better with video stabilization and full 1080p HD. Siri also seems like an awesome addition, but I've known voice actuation is never as reliable as I would like. We'll just have to see. I'm lookIng forward to the faster dual-core A5 processor. Having the 3G for over 2 years is a miserable affair.

To answer questions, Siri is for the iPhone 4S only. The A5 processor is needed for that technology. 3G network speeds are theoretically as fast as "4G" networks offered by carriers like Sprint or Verizon. 3G networks are up to 5 times more reliable than "4G" networks. No, there is not NFC technology in the iPhone 4S.

And just to reiterate, October 7 iPhone 4S pre-orders - October 12 iOS 5 release for 3GS and 4 - October 14 Official iPhone 4S release. Expect up to 3 weeks for delivery ... maybe longer.

Like I said in the live blog article.....something is not adding up here. Look at all the case leaks and then the Case Mate leak which seems to match almost all the other leaks and was immediately pulled from the site.

I'm telling you people.....you need to wait it out on this one. I think Apple has a trick up their sleeve and the iPhone 5 will be released early next year.

It just doesn't make sense that all of these case leaks would drop just for there to be NO iPhone 5. and obviously Apple isnt going to announce an early 2012 iPhone 5 right now because it would kill 4S sales.

Don't rush to get the 4S just yet. Wait it out for a month or so and see if anything new develops on the iPhone 5. There will be plenty of 4S phones available as I'm sure many people won't upgrade so fast as they did with the 3G/3GS to the 4.
