  • iPhone 4S - Tech Specs and Features

The iPhone 4S was announced just a tad before the keynote on the Japan Apple Store, covered here by Akshay Masand. It will be released on October 14th, shipped with the iOS 5 operating system which will be released on October 12th. It will feature the same look and style of the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4S features many of the expected specifications. They include:
    • Dual Core A5 Processor.
    • Dual Core Graphics.
    • 8 Hour 3G Talk Time Battery.
    • 2x Faster Download Speed.
    • CDMA + GSM Radios.
    • 16, 32, 64GB Models.
    • 8 Megapixel Camera 3264x2448 Resolution, 5 Lens.
    • Backside Illuminated CMOS.
    • 1080p Video Recording.
    • Video Image Stabilization.
    • Temporal Noise Reduction.
    • Siri Voice.

The iPhone 4S is up to 2x faster than before, with dual-core graphics, which are said to be seven times faster than previous iPhone, "With the power of A5, we can bring all sorts of detail to the environment, like fireflies, leaves in the wind, koi in the pond." This zippy new CPU doesn't drain the battery life either. The battery life has been increased to 8 hours of 3G talk-time.

The iPhone 4S still uses 3G, although the data speeds are tantamount to that of current 4G speeds. Theoretical download speeds are now twice, 14.4Mbps versus 7.2 on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S is a dual-radio phone that can operate on both CDMA and GSM networks. The iPhone 4S can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality - something that has never been done for any phone before.

The Camera is no slouch either. It's an 8 Megapixel Still camera which is 1/3 faster than the iPhone 4's camera. The backside illuminated CMOS offers a 73% brighter picture. For video recording, the camera is capable of 1080p video and includes video stabilization as mentioned here in more depth. The camera has a 5 lens system for absolutely wonderful lighting, clarity, and accurate shots.

The iPhone 4S also includes a voice feature called Siri. The feature allows for you to have a 'conversation' with your iPhone by talking to it to get results. You can tell your iPhone 4S to tell you how to get somewhere, or to set an alarm, and there are several more things that you can command your iPhone 4S to do with Siri. It works right out of the box and learns your voice and talking habits to work better for you. It’ll be built-in with support for English, French, and German. It will be beta at the start; by beta they mean they’ll add more languages and services over time.

The iPhone 4S will be available in black and white. 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399.

The iPhone 4S can be pre-ordered on October 7th. Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T will have the iPhone 4S, but T-Mobile will not.

Are you impressed with the new iPhone 4S? Tell us what you expected, or want to see in the next iPhone!

So has apple not released what all the GSM specs are? Their site seems to be down and they didn't show what GSM bands were in this devices. I'm crossing my figures for slight hope that it has the AWS 3G bands included also. And what's the price of the unlocked version?

Nothing about the iPhone 4S surpasses the Samsung Galaxy S II in my opinion. Only +1 to upgrade to 4S from 3GS are the current App/Games I've paid for and all my music is perfectly organized in iTunes.

My original question is still valid though... what would you need 25Mbps that 10-14Mbps can't accomplish.

No clue... but AT&T's HSPA+ is 14.4Mbps max which will equate to real world speeds of 8-10 i would think.

Ah come on guys!!! The 4 killed everything out there...no matter what came: Galaxy S 2 etc...

Now the 4S is just a good upgrade!!!! A jailbroken iPhone will be the best of all!!!

      Long live Cydia!!!

Theoretically it can. Maybe if you were the only person using the network.

10-14Mbps is half of 25Mbps ....... Right? so thats what 10-14Mbps cant accomplish ^_^

I am speechless. Never upgraded to 4 because Apple didn't get the white in.. Been using 3Gs and now wondering what I should do. I wanted a bigger screen.

So where exactly and on who's network did you plan on achieving/using speeds greater than 14Mb/s? I have used my AT&T iPhone 4 all over the country and NEVER seen data throughput faster then 2Mb/s...on a device that is capable of 7MB/s+! It would be like selling a car that 'runs on gas OR plutonium...you're choice' Nobody is going to benefit from '4G' without the network infrastructure that ONLY Sprint BARELY has...it would just add cost/bulk/complexity without purpose.

In my opinion, there isn't even a chance the major networks will catch up in time for the iteration of iPhone (5, 4G). So it really shouldn't bother anyone but little children that want to have a wind-pissing contest with their Android brethren.

Point was, Verizon's 3G is 2 mbps max. While AT&T may be getting 14.4, without LTE, its not very fair to VZ users.

Same here. I'm actually now thinking of maybe getting a iPhone 4 on the cheap now.

I don't see what the big deal is... the only "let down" is its called the "4S" and not the "5" and possibly that it looks similar to the i4. And we all knew that 4G was not going to come down the pipe until AT&T had implemented it completely for a couple of years. Whats the big deal? I don't see how any of this is a surprise.

      no AWS frequency.

minor boost in speed, better camera, more storage and newer IOS. but really the same phone.

I really hope the 5 is a TRUE world phone.

ah well, at least another 6 months to save up.

watchin Apple's stock go down down down....

Officially the worst iPhone release ever. They postponed this to October for just a minor upgrade? Not even an OLED screen? Or even a up in the contrast ratio?AND worst of all, no Steve Jobs

the same stupid phone! just faster and better camera. Apple likes to make people suffer by buying useless crap. no 4G you can just tranfer AVI files to the phone because it's not compatible. you have to jailbreak/unlock to make into USB Mount. no animated wallpaper same freaking icons as everyone! unless you pay someone to add cydia. OVERALL- DUMB FOLLOWERS. HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS CRAP! Any Android phone is WAY better than the iphone. Android Says " be a leader, not a follower!" nuff said!

Are you freaking kidding me? Are you avoiding answering the question b/c the only and obvious answer is there's nothing a 14.4 connection can't do that a 25Mb connection can on a MOBILE device. You could have a 1 million Mbps connection and you're still limited by the processing power of the device itself. I have a 15Mbps connection on my desktop computer and it loads pages and plays games without a hitch. If you truly have no data limits in Japan you're in the VAST minority of users. The rest of us are capped at 2GB or get throttled after that on "unlimited" so the extra speed wouldn't matter anyways.
