  • iOS 4.2 Drops Today

Apple is releasing iOS 4.2.1 today for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, finally unifying all iOS product lines under the same firmware version. As a part of the update, Apple will make Find My iPhone available for free to owners of newer iOS devices that can run iOS 4.2.

Ahead of the release - expected to drop at 10 am Pacific time in the US, 6pm GMT - Apple updated the iOS webpage to highlight all of the iOS 4 functionality iPhone and iPod touch users have been able to use for months that will now be coming to the iPad. "iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season," Steve Jobs was quoted as saying in the official Apple press release. "The iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit."

iOS 4.2 users can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation), but not on older devices. This is possibly an explanation for the error messages in the beta that talked about devices that did not "qualify for free MobileMe service." Find My iPhone was previously only available to users with MobileMe accounts.

iPad users with iOS 4.2 will now be able to rent TV episodes directly to their tablet using iTunes for viewing within 30 days of download or 48 hours after as well as find and highlight specific words and phrases on web pages in Mobile Safari. In order to woo business users, Apple's also included "enhanced enterprise support" like stronger security, improved device management capabilities and better enterprise integration. iOS 4.2 also has support for 25 new languages, including Korean, Portuguese and - finally - the Traditional Chinese characters used in Taiwan. The iPad has not been available on the island until now because it only supported the Simplified Chinese characters used on the mainland.

I surely hope NitoTV gets MKVs to work properly. I can currently stream MP4 to my Roku X.D.S but I have to convert MKVs to MP4 which sucks.

Right now I use PS3's and PS3 Media Server to stream all my MKV, MT2S, AVI, and Mpeg2 files to my home theater. I have an AppleTV2 and originally thought it might replace the PS3 since I don't use it for gaming but multi format media support is a MUST before I can make the full transition.

Will updating my iPad 3G (which is still on 3.2, jailbroken with Spirit) eliminate any chance of jailbreaking it when the jailbreak tool(s) come out? It's not like it has a baseband that will be updated... or does it?

      Just wondering.

Exactly! We are in the same boat. I think a lot of us would appreciate any updates you guys get on multi-format media support for the Apple TV 2nd Gen

Trying to update my apple tv and it keeps failing. Might have something to do with it being jailbroken . Gonna try doing it the manual way with my MacBook.

Cydia and Mobile Substrate are still broken so the installed version will crash. The jailbreak is ready so just give it a short while and let them make a final package bundle with the new tools.

@MuscleNerd until @comex can pull another trick out of his hat, the 4.2.1 JB is tethered on all except 3G, older 3GS, & non-MC ipt2g

i just can't see making the switch due to 1080 vs 720. I know on some TVs you can't see a difference but on some you definitely can

streaming from a NAS with dlna is the way to go on PS3 for movie watching

I don't want to go off on one if I've got the wrong end of the stick, but if I haven't - that SUCKS.
Read somewhere there is a workaround to this. Something about enabling it with a sign on with an iPhone 4 or iPad then just using the signon with older devices.

Haven't had a chance to try it out yet though.
