  • iOS 4.2 Drops Today

Apple is releasing iOS 4.2.1 today for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, finally unifying all iOS product lines under the same firmware version. As a part of the update, Apple will make Find My iPhone available for free to owners of newer iOS devices that can run iOS 4.2.

Ahead of the release - expected to drop at 10 am Pacific time in the US, 6pm GMT - Apple updated the iOS webpage to highlight all of the iOS 4 functionality iPhone and iPod touch users have been able to use for months that will now be coming to the iPad. "iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season," Steve Jobs was quoted as saying in the official Apple press release. "The iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit."

iOS 4.2 users can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation), but not on older devices. This is possibly an explanation for the error messages in the beta that talked about devices that did not "qualify for free MobileMe service." Find My iPhone was previously only available to users with MobileMe accounts.

iPad users with iOS 4.2 will now be able to rent TV episodes directly to their tablet using iTunes for viewing within 30 days of download or 48 hours after as well as find and highlight specific words and phrases on web pages in Mobile Safari. In order to woo business users, Apple's also included "enhanced enterprise support" like stronger security, improved device management capabilities and better enterprise integration. iOS 4.2 also has support for 25 new languages, including Korean, Portuguese and - finally - the Traditional Chinese characters used in Taiwan. The iPad has not been available on the island until now because it only supported the Simplified Chinese characters used on the mainland.

It's like anything else. Example game consoles. Ps1 came out them ps2 came out then Ps3. I am sure you can't get support for PS1 and who knows about ps2. It's technology you can't keep up, well not unless you have tons of money. Miscrosoft does the same thing with the OS. I am sure the android phones will follow the same thing, just wait and see.

I am hopeful that something like this will happen but again it is just bit of BS on Apple's part. The 3Gs isn't an old phone, a year & a half old, & I don't think it would have killed them to at least add that phone to the mix for Find my iPhone.

This is just a clear cut case of Apple being a douche about their services and only doing just "enough" to compete with other companies.

Funny. I didn't know the iPod Touch 2g and 3g could get FaceTime. Also, what's with the iPod Touch 2g getting homescreen wallpaper? Looks like a screwed up picture.

What's even worse is they show the camera and FaceTime on the iPod touch user guide that comes preinstalled as a Safari bookmark on a 2G and 3G. I also like how they make the 2g and 3G a little dusty looking but the 4 is all shiny.

Someone please upgrade their Apple TV and see if you can now stream video such as MKV or MP4 formatted files.

How do I know if my shsh blobs are saved? In cydia, at the top of the screen, it says "SHSH: iOS 4.1, 4.2b3". Does this mean they're saved for 4.1? I have an iPhone 4 at 4.1.

If you have Tiny Umbrella (which you should because that's the only way to get 4.1 saved), there's a button in the top right I believe that shows you what you have saved. Cydia is kinda messed up on that right now and shows 4.1 and 4.2b3 for everybody. Or at least me, and I don't have 4.2 saved.

MP4 should be able to stream. MKV is not an Apple supported format and there are no jailbroken apps that will allow this yet but NitoTV is working on it.
