  • Jailbreakers Befuddled By MuscleNerd's Mysterious Visit to Apple

There's a great deal of speculation surrounding why the iPhone Dev Team's MuscleNerd recently paid a visit to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

With recent news of major tech companies offering jobs and internships to well-known hackers (you may recall Comex landing an internship at Apple recently), some are wondering if MuscleNerd has been offered a job with the iPhone-maker. As Business Insider reported, without Comex and MuscleNerd, "the elite community of iPhone hackers known as the iPhone Dev Team will be significantly crippled."

For now, all MuscleNerd would admit to on Twitter is that he visited the prominent campus. “Well this afternoon sure was fun… (what a great company!)…,” he tweeted, including a picture of himself wearing a t-shirt that reads: “I visited the Apple campus. But that’s all I’m allowed to say.”

He subsequently tweeted: "my host at Apple surprised me with that visitor's name tag...I had expected it to be my real name ."

MuscleNerd's cryptic messages about his visit to Apple obviously resonated with the 230,000 people who follow him on Twitter. And this weekend, many are wanting to get to the bottom of this mysterious and unexpected field trip to Apple.

Why Apple didn't do this earlier is beyond me? Congrats to those guys, after all what pays the bills matter (especially if you can do what you like and get paid good for it). There will be others to step up.

Well my iPhone would be boring without a JB, I would definitely move to an android phone if JB was gone.

So you want a job @ apple? Become a JB hacker! That's your reward. Lol

      True. However ...

"Due to Apple implementing new protections, this jailbreak requires a record breaking 5 different exploits to complete"

Hiring hackers maybe isnt that bad, they can take all their ideas and projects to the "legal" iOS, maybe one day jailbreaking will become useless because it will be so full of jailbreaking ideas and stuff, who lnows

The news comes from P0sixninja talk at jailbreaking convention MyGreatFest. P0sixninja looked ecstatic when he gave the announcement a few minutes ago, in which it was stated that iPad 2 and the iPhone 5 can be jailbroken using five userland exploits which have been discovered over time.

Yes, you read that right. Not one, not two, but five exploits have been discovered for the iPad 2 and iPhone 5. What is even more fantastic about this news is how all of these exploits are userland ones. And as quoted by P0sixninja himself “it’s the record breaking number of exploits found”.

These userland exploits are, as suggested by the name, related to software. Unlike hardware-based exploits, these can be patched. A hardware revision wouldn’t matter that much in this case.

As per my knowledge, Apple has only revised hardware once and that was with the iPhone 3GS which received a new model back in late 2009 having an updated bootrom that patched pod2g’s 24kpwn exploit. But since it’s a software exploit then the hardware revision won’t mean much for the jailbreak itself.

What does this mean for you? Well it basically means that iPhone 5 (and iOS 5) should get an (untethered) jailbreak sooner than what was previously expected.

The exploits were discovered by the Chronic Dev Team. A key member of the team itself namely: P0d2g, found exploits like 24kpwn, steaks4uce and also discovered an exploit in the Apple A4 chip, used in iPhone 4, original iPad and iPod touch 4G. p0d2g and p0sixninja are members of the Chronic Dev Team, who were the key developers/hackers behind the famous jailbreak tool Greenpois0n, which back then was the only method available to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 completely untethered.

Since the jailbreak will be userland, it will work on all iOS devices on all exploit-ready iOS versions, and as mentioned earlier, get an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 at launch. P0sixninja also quoted that the it will be the most amazing jailbreak yet! So we have high hopes for this one, we’re sure the Chronic Dev Team is bound to please the jailbreaking community with said jailbreak. So yes, the iPhone 5 will highly likely be jailbreakable soon after launch, though the Chronic Dev Team said that they would need the new iPhone 5 itself to see whether the exploits work or not, but, fingers crossed!
Great news! This hopefully means I only have to pay $199 for an upgrade rather then $649 for an unlocked i5. Also I will enjoy my iPad 2 much more which was/is on 4.3.5 out of the box.

Through Cydia, we download tweaks that add features to applications we already have on our iDevices. Example: iProtect locks applications on iDevices. How could Apple put it as a Native Feature on next Operating Systems ? It won't.

      That's funny

So many won't pay a buck or two for an app!! He'll starve waiting for a 'salary'.

The guy is a sellout. Same goes for that comex geek too. you watch, as soon as apple get what they want they'll chew these two up and spit them out like mother's leftover meatloaf. you'll see. Most of you commenters are so naive it's sad. But I hope I'm wrong and this guy will tell apple to sling their hook and continue jailbreaking. I mean, it's not like him and comex havent already made a small fortune in our donations and a name for themselves in the community, is it.

This might have been said already, but this is a great boost to the JB community.

The Dev Team had their time, but it's been clear for a while that Apple were the better opponent, now the path is clear for some new JB blood, and more importantly, some fresh thinking.

And with the possibility of a job with Apple at the end of it, expect to see some serious players start wearing the Dev Teams shoes pretty soon.

How do you know what they've made? You don't, you are guessing. By the way MN doesn't even accept donations.

Most likely the strategy is to get them contractually tied to Apple so that they cannot continue to hack. Nothing to do with employment, I'm sure there's plenty of apple nerds who could hack at this level as well, they just happened to have been good enough to get hired without the publicity of hacking Once you are hired by Apple and sign the slew of contracts that restrict what you can do during and after employment.... you can bet they are out of the iphone hacking business. And all it will cost Apple is oh several days of employment if that's how long they want to keep them on board. Quite brilliant actually. Very sad as wel

It's not about the money. It's about the contractual restrictions posed on them once they become Apple employees.
