  • Microsoft Windows 8 'Legitimately Threatens' iPad Dominance

The camps are once again at war. This week, following the official Windows 8 preview by Microsoft, Apple fanatics and Microsoft die-hards are squaring off in a heated new debate sparked by the plethora of tech reporters and industry analysts who see the Windows 8 operating system as the first "legitimate threat" to the iPad.

After Microsoft's previewed its coming operating system, Windows 8, on a prototype Samsung tablet at a conference in Anaheim, Calif., Tuesday, some tech-savvy observers reportedly called it the downfall of Apple's iPad.
Microsoft's Windows Division President Steven Sinofsky said at the conference that Microsoft's Windows 8, which is optimized for both PCs and tablets, will be a revolutionary force in personal and mobile computing. "We re-imagined Windows," Sinofsky said. "From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise."

In addition to the attributes of the operating system itself, major players in the PC and tablet realm are already hopping on the Windows 8 bandwagon. Just yesterday, we witnessed Dell and Samsung's enthusiastic plans to release tablets based on the new Windows 8 OS, although a release date for the OS hasn't yet been announced.

"Windows has long been the dominant computer operating system in the world," a report from the International Business Times reads, "though it missed a couple of beats, as consumers began turning to tablets and smartphones to work and socialize. With Windows 8, Microsoft has its eyes set on the tablet market and is aiming to regain the ground it has lost to Apple."

So, is this hype just another example of erroneous "iPad-killer" talk, or does Windows 8 pose a "legitimate threat" to Apple's tablet dominance?

There shouldn't be a debate on which OS is better. If you're smart, you'll use both.

It is almost like they personally had a hand in creating the OS, when they had nothing to do with it in reality. This stuff < logic.

We shall see... So far looks like hype. MS needs to rewrite the entire system and not create a spiderweb over 7 and call it 8! All in all it's great news for consumers. Hopefully MS lights some fire in innovation and we see some real good NEW tech devices as a result. I for one am sick of everyone trying to hang on the heals of Apl. Let's get some leaders with more and newer stuff!!!
It's this kind of ignorance that makes these debates happen. When people are too lazy, or whatever their excuse, to watch the keynote from build about Windows 8 they would see that it isn't just piled on top of Windows 7 code. A massive amount was re-written and they have done a pretty amazing job with Alpha software. It's fast, uses less than 300 mb of ram, and the os only uses 28 (if I remember correctly) processes. Windows 7 uses more ram and runs more processes by default. How is this code just piled on again? I'm not a fanboy for either company, as I'm typing this on my mbp right now, I'm just saying educate yourself. Don't trash talk other companies to make Apple look better because it just makes you look fanboyish and ignorant.

If you were truly as "educated" as you seem to think, you wouldn't be posting your thoughts here.

This baffles me. Why wouldn't I post here if I think of myself as educated?

Windows 8 is going to be a fantastic addition for all of us who like to take our computing mobile, providing the hardware is good enough to support a smooth experience with a long battery life. If there is anything that will rival the iPad I believe this will have a very good chance.

A friend of mine recently distributed iPads to her staff only to discover that they couldn't use the Access DBs that her company depends on. Response. They should have bought lightweight laptops. I had to tell her she'd have to hold out for W8 My brother bought one to be able to be able to get some done without lugging his laptop around. Response. I should have bought a netbook. I had to tell him that he'd have to hold out for W8. I wanted something to use OneNote on the run but MobileNoter is garbage. Ok. We should have done our homework first and we've have found other uses for the things and still like them. But we're really disappointed too. And their are stupid flaws in the machine like not having a common file system and having to depend on the cloud as a workaround. I can't help wondering how many of those huge sales numbers are sitting on a shelf or have been put up on eBay. Obviously Apple got the formula right at the right time or they wouldn't be flying off the shelves. Android is an also ran. But *this* is why W8 is a threat. As ugly as W8 is, on all levels, I may be forced to switch and much of the Corpoarate Universe is holding out for the same reasons.
