  • Microsoft Windows 8 'Legitimately Threatens' iPad Dominance

The camps are once again at war. This week, following the official Windows 8 preview by Microsoft, Apple fanatics and Microsoft die-hards are squaring off in a heated new debate sparked by the plethora of tech reporters and industry analysts who see the Windows 8 operating system as the first "legitimate threat" to the iPad.

After Microsoft's previewed its coming operating system, Windows 8, on a prototype Samsung tablet at a conference in Anaheim, Calif., Tuesday, some tech-savvy observers reportedly called it the downfall of Apple's iPad.
Microsoft's Windows Division President Steven Sinofsky said at the conference that Microsoft's Windows 8, which is optimized for both PCs and tablets, will be a revolutionary force in personal and mobile computing. "We re-imagined Windows," Sinofsky said. "From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise."

In addition to the attributes of the operating system itself, major players in the PC and tablet realm are already hopping on the Windows 8 bandwagon. Just yesterday, we witnessed Dell and Samsung's enthusiastic plans to release tablets based on the new Windows 8 OS, although a release date for the OS hasn't yet been announced.

"Windows has long been the dominant computer operating system in the world," a report from the International Business Times reads, "though it missed a couple of beats, as consumers began turning to tablets and smartphones to work and socialize. With Windows 8, Microsoft has its eyes set on the tablet market and is aiming to regain the ground it has lost to Apple."

So, is this hype just another example of erroneous "iPad-killer" talk, or does Windows 8 pose a "legitimate threat" to Apple's tablet dominance?

It's over for apple and android in the tablet market. We will have a full fledged windows 8 running on a tablet no restrictions we will be able to run this thing smoothly and install whatever we want and not restricted to an app store. I will be saying goodbye to my ipad2 when these new windows tablets come out. Can't wait.

not on tablets. Ipad are now the ultimate (tablet) power in the universe... But no, really. Ipads are too popular for the general public for windows 8 to outdo it.

Windows 8 does look cool (atleast the tablet) but well see what happens.

I am not 100% sure how Windows 8 will handle the desktop market but the interface looks pretty cool. Being an "iPad Killer" will rely on the hardware vendors on board to come up with a modern and compatible device but the OS using current iWindows features such as media center and extender would open up a lot of doors to the tablet market. I haven't been on board with the iPad as I do not have a use for one outside of my MBA and iPhone however, a Windows 8 tablet with comparable hardware would be pretty amazing in my opinion to work together with my home media servers and HTPC.

Hopefully Microsoft Windows 8 will be a major improvement over Windows Vista and 7.

Ya, I wouldn't necessarily say it's over. Windows has a habit of not running smoothly, and even though Windows 7 is a huge improvement over their old operating systems, I still prefer my Mac. Also, Windows 7 mobile has been a huge improvement over their past mobile systems, but in the opinion of most people is still not really in the running against Apple or Android. So just chillax until we see this thing for real. Chances of it being the end all be all are slim.

Thank You Microsoft for teaching a lesson to Apple's arrogance. Thanks for teaching Apple that you are king in OS. I like iOS on phones but on PCs windows still has far more and better configurable options than iOS.

And when have we heard this before? You would think these so called "tech savvy" experts would eventually just come to the conclusion that they just don't get it when it comes to these predictions time and time again. There simply will not be an Apple killer anytime soon if ever. These competing companies simply don't have the product design and marketing talent to compete. And Microsoft will be the last company to ever actually innovate anything.

Think this is all hype... sure it will bring more competition but until Apple's way of making their OS worry free attracts a lot of customers. If MS copies that model of filtering software before it can be installed on their platform then iOS is going to continue to flurish. Besides this... Hardware and software made specifically for one another is another huge advantage. Being able to program for a limited few devices take a lot of bugs out of the equation. In the end however we can only wait and see and I welcome a new great platform but lets not get all hyped before it happens because I'm tired of hearing about "name-of-iDevice-here Killers" that turns into big flops.

well...yea...windows does have a better advantage then iOS on a PC...but then again...there isnt an iOS computer...so...dunno how u can tie windows running on a pc to iOS....windows to OS X yes....but not windows to iOS on pc...on tabs its different. windows 8 on a tablet vs iOS...thats different, windows wins over options

as far as this goes for me...i would be getting a win8 tab...gonna have to give it a try...it impresses me more then ANY android tablet. will this be the iPad killer? dunno but it will definitely give it a competition i bet.

I agree. It's too individualized. Both are probably equally good at some things and not so good at others. I'm excited to see what Windows 8 brings to the table. Love my W7 laptop i've had for a while.

Well, we could jailbreak our iPads and make them dual-boot Windows 8, now that it works on ARM chipsets. We'll just need someone to get OpeniBoot to work on newer iDevices.

Has everyone forgotten why so many people migrated to Apple OS to begin with? *Doesn't matter how innovative or clean your OS is, if you continually have to download Security patches every 24hrs - I'm out....

A threat? *ROFL*. I just tested the "developer preview" of Windows 8. It's a joke. Seriously. Granted, I admire the fact that Microsoft is no longer in childish, relentless competition with Apple as they were in the 90s, but cmon - did the people writing this article actually spend any time with Windows 8 / Tablet edition?

Wow, I'm trying to keep my expectations relatively low here, but as a windows developer this has got me really very interested and excited at the prospect of bringing my windows programs, not just apps to a tablet.
