  • Free MobileMe in iOS 4.2?

Hints of a free MobileMe service can be seen in a new framework in the iOS 4.2 gold master. Error messages show when a user has reached "the maximum number of free accounts" for a given device and when a device is not “qualified for free MobileMe service." There's also a message saying that an Apple ID can't be used for MobileMe Mail but can be used for other services.

When the iOS 4.2 GM originally dropped last month, many people noted that it allowed users to sign in to their MobileMe accounts using their Apple IDs. This led to renewed speculation that Apple might offer a free MobileMe service for iDevice users through their Apple IDs. A closer look at a new private framework gives evidence that free Apple accounts will be available at least for some users. The AppleAccounts.framework file is not present in iOS 4.1, and contains error message text strings about free MobileMe accounts that will apparently have device limits. For example, one error message is displayed when "the maximum number of free accounts has been activated" on a particular device, suggesting that iOS devices will be able to have multiple MobileMe logins.

Another error message warns that a particular Apple ID "cannot be used for MobileMe Mail, but you can use it for other MobileMe services." Other than @me.com mail, MobileMe offers services like Find My iPhone, iDisk, Photo Galleries, and syncing of Safari bookmarks and Calendar entries.

I would be shocked if the find my phone was a free feature. I am willing to bet that was the reason a good majority of people ever started using it in the first place...

What's the advantage of mobile me over using exchange to sync with gmail? I have cloud contacts and when I add something to my calendar on my work computer it immediately shows up on my iPhone and iPad complete with alerts. Google photosvwork great too... Why would I pay for these things? What's find my phone? Even if MobileMe is free i think I'd stick w google. I'm beginning to regret being so beholden to Apple what with all my pricey apps. Anyone else think making mm free could be a way for apple to make it tougher for their users to make the jump to android? Not that's there's anything wrong with that of course...

AT&T (employer) gave me a bunch of free mobileme codes. i gave them to a lot of people, and used 3-5 for my account, it gave a free year subscription; so i stacked em up and haven't paid a dime - ever.

I like it, but I use my exchange server more. the best feature IMO is the find my iphone.

I feel that apple is finally feeling the heat from its competitors and they are trying to step things up to prevent people from jumping ship. i say its about time

Doesn't matter. Jailbreaking is legal. They do anything to mess with my device (well I prolly couldn't prove it) so scratch that

If MobileMe was free I'd definitely use it.
But I really don't think ts worth $100 bucks a month. Rather use Yahoo or Gmail.

Stealth, could you elaborate on why you think it's worth the $99/year? What features justify paying for the service when most of the features can be found for free on by their competition? I'm not saying you're wrong, just wondering if I had completely overlooked part(s) of it when I had the 3 month trial.
