  • Google Voice Finally on App Store

Almost a year and a half since they first submitted it to Apple, Google finally has their own Google Voice app for the iPhone on the App Store. But it's an extremely different environment now, with many alternatives for both jailed and jailbroken iPhones, and it's unclear that the name-brand app is a significant improvement.

Google first submitted the Google Voice app 16 months ago, but its application languished in limbo: not approved, but not rejected either. Other third-party apps that operated as front-ends to the Google Voice service were explicitly rejected, however, with Apple claiming that they duplicated native iPhone functionality. After complaints from Google and US lawmakers, the Federal Communications Commission sent a request for information about the Google Voice submission to not only Apple but AT&T as well, based on suspicions that AT&T had unfairly blocked the app for use on its network. AT&T blamed it on Apple, and Apple, for its part, said the app "appears to alter the iPhone’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail."

Apple updated the approval guidelines for apps on September 9 of this year removing any reference to "duplicate functionality" and opening the way for apps like GV Mobile, which made it to the App Store after being available on Cydia since July 2009. Google's app provides much of the same functionality, but can't run on an iPad or iPod touch, like the GV Mobile + app can. What's more, the Google app has some fit and finish issues: the Add Contact button on the dialer doesn't work, for example.

You can't beat the price (free), but in this case, you get what you pay for. Time will tell if Google puts significant development resources into the app.

I see many people complaining, but thanks for posting this news here, ModMyi I used to check to see if the app was coming obsessively, but I gave up a while and had completely forgotten about it. I came to this site, and now I know it's out.

And, for those complainers. ModMyi is not your servant. Be glad that a site like this even exists. If you are so unhappy, make your own site.

Just a few feedback about this app from my point of view:
      - I like it. I'm glad I don't have to use that crappy GV Mobile+.
      - I personally don't agree with people that are saying SMS GV Extension is a must. I don't think so. This app has Push notification. If you are saying you want to have that preview on home screen function, yea, I guess you can get this extension, but it's not free either. I don't know if a little feature like that is worth that much. In my case, I have that feature turned off anyway (Why would I want to risk my privacy? Anyone can pick up the phone and read part of my text msg? I don't think so). Lastly, there were some bug report on the extension before. As Apple continues to update firmwares, I foresee new problems in the future. I don't know who the developer is, but we all have seen how apps like this take a while to roll out fixes or newer versions when problems appear.
      - On one last note, have you guys looked up this app on iTunes on your computer? I could not believe how many idiots were rating this app as only one star complaining that it did not support ipod/ipad. These idiots need to read and understand what the app is before making hundreds of unfair reviews like that. I was annoyed enough (and felt sorry for google) that I flagged those reviews and asked Apple to remove those reviews. In case anyone doesn't understand what I am talking about, Google Voice is a service that works with "real phone." It is not meant for ipod/ipad because they are "not phones."

I got it installed onto my iPod Touch by using the desktop/laptop version of iTunes to install the free Google Voice app into my app library. From there on a Mac I right-clicked the app in iTunes under my app library and clicked "show in finder" (this is equivalent to find the subdirectory of it under "program files" and "iTunes" on a PC). Then using SSH I established a session with the iPod Touch I was installing it into and placed it into a downloads folder. Then I used in... to unpack the .ipa file that I had from the beginning LAWFULLY obtained. If for whatever reason you do not feel comfortable using that method of unpacking the software I suggest further looking into means of achieving this SSH client (such as WinSCP) or via MobileTerminal provided that you have a stable release version of that set aside.

I hope I was of some help to at least one person, so far I have found that on a 2nd gen MC iTouch the texting works but I am yet to figure out how to use the calling by means of external mic. I cannot yet verify if the above mentioned steps will be guaranteed to work on all models of iPod Touches or iPads unfortunately though.

When I get the chance (this weekend) I will write up a tutorial provided that enough people would feel the need for one. And if the community as a whole frowns upon the execution of this process I will certainly not post it against anyone's wishes.

To guy working on getting this to work on the iPod: texting is the most youll be able to do; you need an actual phone to call.

I have my GV Mobile + set to SMS my phone. So I don't mind the app not doing the push itself. I like the official app, but having to constantly re- log in is beyond annoying.

      i love it.

someone asked about calling another att number using the gv number, does this use minutes?

i suppose a better question is, does anyone know the guidelines to what uses your minutes and what doesnt? i would love a reference to review that would educate me on this. any help would be appreciated.

Using GV negates mobile-to-mobile since you're not dialing the AT&T number but a landline number over at Google HQ which then redirects you to the appropriate contact/number.

The only way I can think of getting using GV and not using minutes is setting your GV number as part of your A-List and then NOT using this app. Using the old GV webapp in which you select the contact and it calls you (so the call is free) before calling out.

You'd also need to go to the GV settings and make it so instead of showing who's calling you, it shows your GV ringing.

TL;DR - it's not worth the hassle. If you're anything like me, you're probably drowning in rollover minutes anyways so use them.

Thanks for clearly that up, and now that you've explained it that way, it seems pretty logical. I have plenty of minutes so it's not a big deal. I personally use the the caller ID to show as my own number, then I set a ringtone for my name. So anyone that calls my gv number (usually business contacts, that I always answer) will have a special ringtone that is different from my regular ringtone (that is the iphone number). This beats carrying two phones, and probably the best app i own.

Sadly, text messaging doesn't work too well with the GV app. The app quits whenever I try to access a text. Oh well. Maybe they'll fix that in an update.

Semi-related: SMS GV Extension just got updated and it can now integrate with the official Google Voice app.

Since the new gv app has push notification I don't see the need for the extension. Sure some people may find it convenient to have everything merged into the native app (or bite), but I prefer them separated. Are there any other advantages to the extension that I may have overlooked?

The extension has an SBSettings toggle so you can switch on the fly which number (your phone or GV) your texts are being sent from. Aside from that, it's about the convenience of texting through GV using the native environment of the messaging app and bitesms.

If you want them separate then yeah I can see how the extension wouldn't be appealing.

Two interesting behaviors. In bitesms if create a mms it will send as mms through APay&Pay. This is great integration. Second I now have GV official app and upgraded SMS GV extension. Now When i receive I get a +1 phone number in the header on quick reply and in the message body the contacts name followed by the message. Not sure what is causing it. I have tried setting SMS GV eat to rec on mail or GV app. Same results. Any ideas?

the +1 with the name on the body sounds like the message is being forwarded as a text to AT&T. Check your Google Voice settings and make sure you have "receive text messages" on your phone DISABLED.
